Anyone know of a decent photo mosaic program? Preferably free because I’m doing it for a non-profit. All the ones I’ve found look like they are from 1992.

Hey I’d love to. French is my first language and I’m fluent but I speak with an accent. I’d be happy to do it if @eny who is French is not available

Do I need to re-up my bicycle insurance this year?
My bike has probably lost 1k in value since I bought it, but when I change the value, my premium doesn’t go down much of anything.

I ride the bike probably 20 days of a 30 day month, make multiple stops a day in the city, and don’t have like THE BEST lock (it’s fine, but if someone wants a bike bad enough they’ll get it, you know?). I do my best to lock it in plain sight and to be quick in high theft areas, but I’d say it’s got a moderate likelihood of being stolen not from my home. Although… I mean, it hasn’t been stolen in 2020…
They don’t make this bike anymore, but the newer model is $2,000, which is what would be offered as a replacement once I paid my $300 deductable. My premium is $210/year.

I should probably renew at least one more year right? UGH I don’t wanna.

HELP ME ADULT.

Hmmmm, I have a higher income/savings than you do, which colors my opinions but if it was me I would ‘self-insure’. I’d buy a fancy lock, and put the [$210 premium - cost of fancy lock] into a savings account earmarked for emergencies like this, and whenever possible start adding in a little more to get to the $300 deductible amount as well.

You’d basically be paying $510, or 1/4 the cost of the bike to protect against possible theft. If you paid $210 premium last year as well, you’d be out $720, or almost 1/2 of the cost of the bike to insure it.

I mostly insure our bicycles because of the liability insurance that comes with it - is that part of your decision making as well?

Personally, we have nice bikes but could easily self-insure and did for years until I started thinking about the liability (especially because we are on electric bikes). If you’re living somewhere hilly, you could get moving pretty quickly and if someone jumped in front of you, you could possibly seriously injure them. $210 a year seems high though - we pay about that for 4 bikes and two people?

I am currently shopping for a new bed (for the second time in 5 months ) and this time I think I have decided that I just don’t care how expensive it is, I am buying whatever I love the most. I have always been against spending more than $500-$600 on a mattress, but after being extremely uncomfortable for years on all the wrong beds I am over it. I have chronic back pain and I feel like I deserve to be comfortable and not hating life every time I go to bed. So, has anyone actually had luck/felt like it was worth it to buy the $$$$ beds, and are they really as life changing as the reviews say they are? Is spending $1k-$1.5k on a bed really that much better than whatever clearance model at Mattress Firm?

No answers but I’m following with great interest.

We bought the top end Leesa mattress when everything was closed down in person due to covid because when I read a bunch of reviews it seemed like the best match for a mix of side sleeping and back sleeping. We’ve been happy with it, but their return policy is supposed to be very easy.

Not a question but a random signal boost (if this is okay, if not let me know and I’ll delete):

A tiny organization is applying for a grant from the Gates Foundation to promote gender equality in the U.S. The organization itself is called 5050Congress and its mission is to amend the U.S. Constitution to have 50% women in Congress.

They are looking to hire someone to help them make a 90 second video to submit as part of the grant materials. It doesn’t have to be high production value, an iPhone video is fine, but right now they don’t have anyone with skills in that area. Feel free to PM me for more details.

A few years ago I spent all the money on a sleep number bed. They even do interest free financing. I mean… at the cost they kind of need to, lol. I hated spending it, but I love the bed and sleep much better on it than on any other bed I’ve had. I know nothing about the brand Saatva (I think?) but I saw an ad that said they are 1/2 the cost of a sleep number. Might be worth looking into? It seems like with your back problems something adjustable might be good if you can find something affordable.

ETA: I looked and I guess it adjusts at the head and foot, but not the firmness like I thought.

On bikes and locks, how good are lock companies at reimbursing in case of theft? Many locks come with theft damage protection but I don’t know how well they actually pay out.

Don’t worry too much about pricey locks, though. Pretty much any lock can be defeated in under a minute with a cordless angle grinder.

We ended up hating our Sleep Number bed but we had one of the base models.

I’ve never insured a bike before, because I don’t tend to lock up my more expensive bikes BUT…when I do I just use a super good lock and don’t leave it out for long. I have an ABUS folding lock that I love. It was like…$100, but worth it because I feel pretty confident that unless someone is out specifically looking to cut locks with electric tools, it won’t get stolen. It’s a super heavy lock, and I’m not saying it’s like “theft proof” but at least in my area…bike theft seems to be a crime of opportunity, and the easier a bike is to steal, the more likely it will be stolen…people don’t seem to steal based on the type of bike/how nice it is…it’s just about the quickest grab. Often bikes are stolen out of a need for transportation, not to resell. But anyway, I know you have an e-assist bike, right? Is it feasible to take the battery out when you lock it up, too? That could be another layer of protection, although I know batteries are heavy/annoying to carry around.

How much freedom from anxiety are you buying yourself for $210 a year? That’s pretty cheap for mental health care.

Anyone have any ideas for giving out Halloween candy this year in a socially distanced way? Usually we answer the door for a few hours and go to friend’s houses around 9 or 10, leaving the rest of the candy out and just accepting that eventually some shithead will probably come along and empty the entire bowl into their bag, but this year we’re not going out… but also don’t want to answer the door for a ton of kids.

We could leave the whole box outside, but then there’s more time for that one person to ruin it for everyone before most of the neighborhood kids get there.

We could just not participate, but then I’ll be sad and none of the kids will get candy.

Ideas???

Put the bowl out but don’t fill it too full, and refill when nobody is there?
