I haven’t been able to get my usual yeast but I can get this, should I use it any differently? I’m usually using yeast for pizza dough

Do you usually do instant yeast or the kind that you proof in the water?

I think this shouldn’t need proofing - I think you can just add everything at once and mix it up.

Instant yeast shouldn’t need proofing, you just toss it in the flour.

Some people recommend that you use 25% less instant yeast than you would active dry.

I used to use this for pizza dough when it was still available in my store and it worked fine. I proof a little but only for like 5 minutes.

Agree, no need to proof. Might could use less; pizza dough if a good place to try.

Thank you all! I did do a little proofing before but only for a few minutes so this sounds like it will be fine

FWIW I have used both general kinds of dry yeast (as well as multiple brands/strains) in both kinds of rising situations (liquid proof first or not) and don’t notice any difference at all in the way my recipes handle.

I bought Ripple milk today. Trying to find a milk alternative that husband can get on board with. He said it tasted like “liquid grass.” I did not think it was that bad.

I feel like Ripple is as polarizing as cilantro; some people really really hate the taste where I and the friend that introduced it to me don’t mind it at all. I’ve never had it straight, but I don’t care for cow milk that way either.

Favorite ways to clean a garbage disposal? We are open to removing it and cleaning it if necessary but I’d love any tips. Bonus points for eco friendly cleaning solutions.

I’m hoping the disposal is what H keeps smelling and not mold under the cabinets.

oh good call

I’ve never had one but my friends that I housesit for have been fans of baking soda/vinegar followed by ten minute hot water flush. But a LOT of baking soda, like buy a big bag at Costco and fill that sucker up. Then a couple cups of vinegar, let it bubble for a few minutes. Then hot water for ten minutes.

They’ve also used a cheap plastic bottle brush (or those 99 cent ikea toilet brushes) to poke in and scrub under the flaps. I have no idea how well that would work on most models.

This was in fact a discussion over dinner one winter

Haha I love that it was a topic of conversation! I’m really hoping this is it. It has become clear that the sellers were not at all good housekeepers so I feel like there’s a good chance this is what he’s smelling. I noticed a bad smell today but I thought it was last night’s dishes in the sink. Everything is clean now and once bobbin goes to bed we are going to test out a few theories.

If it doesn’t work he wants to paint the damn cabinet with Killz and idk if I can take another 3 days of headaches because everything smells of gasoline.

Oh well then you might as well fill the disposal with actual gasoline and light it on fire. That will kill sink slime I bet.

I’ve never had a garbage disposal, but some people I know who have swore by cutting up a lemon and grinding it through the disposal, just to remove smells. You might try the cleaning with baking soda first and then do the lemon thing.

Frozen cutie (or mandarin, clementine, other minature citrus). I think I’ve seen ice cubes suggested before too, but the citrus smells nice.

I’d remove the damn thing and go back to a regular drain.

The baking soda+vinegar thing has worked really well for my garbage disposal. And then grinding 1/2 a lemon for a nice smell after. Pretty much every time I use a lemon (like 3 times a week at least) I throw it down there to keep things fresh

I’ve always just unplugged them, used something like soft scrub, and scrubbed with a sponge. Replace the splash guard if it’s in poor condition. Be sure to run the disposal regularly. I never have issues with them :woman_shrugging: Had them nearly everywhere I’ve lived.

Eta remove the splash guard to clean, too. Improves visibility a ton.

We’ve had them everywhere we’ve lived too and never had a smell. I don’t think this one smells much either but H is insistent that something in the kitchen smells
