Of course having frozen frosting will force me to make cinnamon rolls again sooner than I normally would. :joy:

You mean there were actually consequences for something awful this administration tried to do?!

FYI in WA ballots must only be postmarked by the election. So I hope other states send them out sooner so they can have more time since
Many states require them to be returned by Election Day.

The nice thing about being somewhere that is entirely vote by mail (well one of them, it’s amazing overall) is we also have ballot drop off boxes all over the county so I always drop mine there and the USPS doesn’t even need to be involved. I started this habit before postage was prepaid but it’s kind of nice anyway.

Seeking opinions on whether it’s a good idea or bad idea to take a microwave out of the basement of my house that’s been down there for who knows how long. Basement is really dusty and prone to light flooding so kind of worried about mildew. Obviously the inside is clean-able, but I’m more worried about those little vents on the side and if nasty stuff will have gotten in there

I’m already starting to clean it up LOL. I forgot I have a vacuum now so I can use the detail nozzle to suck stuff out of the vent fans. The basement of this house is a cornucopia of abandoned goods. I found a Radio Shack cassette recorder that I decided to adopt for novelty display purposes.

Run it in the basement if you have a power receptacle down there. After cleaning, I mean. That’ll blow out those vents, and then you’re probably fine.

ETA: put something in it when you run it, like a coffee cup with some water in it or something.

I want to make a little Reading Corner out of a bottom bunk. The bunk is really low, so any mattress would make it a little squashed, but I think it will need more than thick afghans to make it cozy. Should I get a mattress topper? A short mattress? Please advise me.

I had a book nook under low eaves at my old place.

Is the bunk a platform? If so, one possibility is to order an orthopedic dog bed - I got a 4 inch thick orthopedic egg crate dog bed with a washable cover, size XL, and it was amazing for both me and me kitty as a place to curl up under the eaves. It should be thinner than a full mattress but thicker than a topper, and I think mine cost 35 bucks. I can probably find an Amazon link for it if you want. You’d need to measure the bed to see how wide you can go.

You could maybe try the above over a box spring but I’d worry about busting the box spring, personally. If the bed usually needs a box spring, you could also try converting it into a platform.

Other great things for a book nook: fairy lights; lots of pillows and blankets; space to keep some books (can you use the foot end of the bunk as shelving?); decorations you like. Since this is a bottom bunk, you can do a lot with decorating the underside of the top bunk.

I voted absentee all through college and grad school and sometimes got my ballot a full month before. That’s not quite the same thing as vote by mail though, and I’m sure it depends on your state and maybe even when your town decides to send them out.

a dog bed is a GREAT idea! it’s a little platform bed I guess (it doesn’t need a box spring), and it’s a twin bed. The biggest difficulty is that the bunk bed is very low, and I can Just sit up with no padding on the bed.

I have put up posters and fairy lights and there are some blankets folded up. I have a little plastic drawer set, but I’m not sure I have any room for an actual book Shelf. also, I want to get command hooks and thread the fairy lights through them. I will upload photos to my journal here probably eventually! <3

Another idea that might work is a crib mattress! They can be found pretty cheap and usually last a little bit longer than a dog bed

Either way, sounds cozy!!! :blush::blush:

Looking for suggestions for plant-based milk or product to replace the cow’s milk in my cold brew coffee. I make coffee at home. It is roughly 1:1 concentrate. I’m used to 1% milk (with occasional variance of 0 or 2%). I miss both the flavor and mouth feel of what cow’s milk does. I’ve never been into black coffee (hot or cold).

I have tried 1 or 2 types of soy milk (flavored vanilla and unflavored, sweetened and unsweetened) which ranges from tolerable to blech. I just tried a trader joe’s coconut beverage/plant milk that was a little sweetened and extra blech. (Side note: I’m generally not a fan of coconut and coconut-based products).

I really would like to be off dairy, but I also don’t want to buy every type of plant based milk in every version to go through a litany of grossness. I just want to enjoy my coffee again.

Any suggestions? I’m open to any plant-based ideas with the typical sustainability caveats (e.g., almond milk is not ideal).

There is a pea-based milk that got good reviews. And oatmeal-based milk is getting a lot of talk. I can see where the starch from oatmeal could improved the mouthfeel of the product.

Soy may be the least tasty milk substitute (I worked for a company whose parent company had a division trying to improve the flavor / eliminate the off flavors).

You could try Oatly. They make a full-fat version that is supposed to behave more like milk. I’ve never had it bc it’s new and trendy and is always out of stock at my store, but I think the hype is dying down and you might have better luck now. Rice milk is pretty thin and neutral. That might feel more like 0% milk.

Every pea protein-based milk I have tried felt gritty to me. Almond always seems to have a weird aftertaste when added to coffee.

I am a weirdo that prefers original flavored (sweetened, unflavored) Silk soymilk in my coffee.

What’s your cold brew making method? I’m trying to replace “sad I have to go into work so I’ll pick up an iced vanilla latte” habit with homemade using vanilla soymilk and so far I think it’s my cold brew that isn’t cutting it.

I’ve tried a few different types of milk alternatives and I keep going back to macadamia milk. I buy Milkadamia unsweetened. I don’t know any other brands. But they practice regenerative farming too so that’s cool. I drink it daily with matcha.

I tried oat milk a few weeks ago and it tasted like liquid oatmeal and not like milk at all.

I like cashew in my iced coffee, but I don’t know what environmental things I should be considering that I haven’t been. I started drinking cashew milk because a prospective client was launching it and was explaining all the ways that it solved problems people had with almond milk and soy.

Trader Joe’s has a macadamia nut milk blend that is the best for cold brew I’ve found. Some milk like almond split in cold brew because of the acidity IME. Oat is pretty good also but can precipitate sometimes. The pea protein milks are foul to me, they have an atrocious chemical flavor to me. Almond is either thing or gritty. Soy tastes nasty and my stomach doesn’t tolerate it  I’m very picky on my milk alternatives.

Try looking for “barista blends” or “cream replacments” for stuff wi th better body, versus the milks that are often quite thing. Forager does a half and half substitute that is good in cold brew, but I don’t recall if it has coconut.

Ripple brand is the closest to texture of cow’s milk of anything I’ve tried. I don’t remember what it tasted like though - was at a friend’s and I didn’t realize it wasn’t cow milk.

Oat and rice milk are both pretty easy to make, including in small quantities, if you’d like to try it out on the cheap.
