What does cilantro taste like?

I think I don’t have the gene for it. I don’t hate it, I don’t know that it tastes like soap, but I can’t really tell what it tastes like, either.

Similar to mint? Or Parsley?

It’s closer to a strong parsley for me. Cilantro is more herbal to me, while mint tends to be sharper notes. Good question.

To me cilantro almost has a citrusy taste. No soap taste for me - thankfully because I really like the taste of cilantro

I’d say parsley is purely green
Methi/fenugreek is similar but more
Lemon balm or purslane have more citrus but less coriander

Really it tastes like itself

I’m on team citrus, more lime than lemon (and definitely not orange).

I’m teams citrus and self. Cilantro tastes like cilantro! Part of why it’s so hard to pin down I think is a huge part of cilantro taste is smell. There’s so many crazy cool volatile compounds in it.

Cilantro is one of the very few ingredients for which there is no substitute, in my opinion. It tastes like itself.

I agree! When recipes say “can substitute with parsley” I’m all “nooooooo!”

Also team citrus-like but also, very much strongly itself.

I assume that kind of offensive language is for people who dislike cilantro.

I’m cursed with the cilantro tastes like soap gene. It’s amazing how many restaurants slip cilantro into things you would never have expected it in. Nothing like a hint of soap as you are settling in to enjoy a meal.

I’m so sorry. That is terrible.

This. I still remember the first time I ever tasted cilantro. I was 17 and we were in Austin, TX and I ordered an innocuous sounding “southwest salad” that seemed to be made entirely out of cilantro. I felt so sick after tasting it that I had to leave the table. My whole family was blessed with the soapy taste gene. I have developed a certain tolerance to it now 12 years later, and since I basically live in the land of “put cilantro on everything it goes with everything” I have had to just accept that I will be eating it if I eat a meal that I did not prepare.

I think this is me as well, based on everyone else’s descriptions. What a disappointment!

A FINANCY/ADULT-Y QUESTION
I bought tickets to an event in August 2019. The event would have taken place in April 2020. I can’t go to the new dates for the event. I requested a refund, but they haven’t gotten back to me about it. Can I dispute the charge with my credit card company? I already paid off the charge way back in August.

Yes you can. It will take a few days for it to be reimbursed on your card for services not rendered.

Okay, big macroeconomics question for @anomalily our whoever else can explain this at a high-school economics level. I think it might be important, and to me it reads like the author is basically daring Trump to unpeg the Hong Kong dollar. I understand all that enough to know that China could prop it up for a while by buying Hong Kong dollars with its US dollar reserve, and I understand the whole world economy is interconnected and interdependent. But I know that in such a vague way that I can’t judge scale of impact of any action.

So what does it all mean?

I know absolutely zero about any of this, but if the past 6 months have taught me anything about 2020, I’m comfortable saying that this action will likely dismantle the whole world economy.

I’d like a second opinion (or two) as I re-start weightlifting. I’m in the early stages of recovering from an extended illness of 3-4 years. I haven’t been able to lift weights consistently since February of 2017. I used to be quite strong (for a middle-aged woman) and lifted quite heavy. My initial attempts at lifting now tell me I’m lifting about 25% of what I previously did and may be starting with just bodyweight for legs.

I’ve put together a “baby steps” plan which looks like this (3 sets of 15 at lightish weight):
Day 1: bench chest press / standing rows
Day 2: squats / deadlifts
Day 3: planks / overhead press
Day 4: lots of stretching and foam rolling (yay, connective tissue disease!!)
Days 5-7: repeat Days 1-3

Does it look like I’m hitting all of the major muscle groups? Does it look balanced? Any major flaws you see?

I did Day 1 yesterday and it was the perfect amount of work–didn’t make me exceptionally tired and didn’t set off a flare today. I’m thinking I’d continue like this for several weeks and then either up the weights or add in an exercise each day to round things out more.

I’d appreciate any feedback as I previously worked with a trainer who mixed things up and adjusted for my up-and-down ability due to my condition.
