I will say, she doesn’t use them the way she’s “supposed” to. (Stuck to the wall, combine them, etc) but she has fun anyway haha. Holding them and sticking them in the stream of water, trying to figure out the suction cup, so on.

This sounds delightful. Hmm yes we definitely need some.

Parenting question: Pumpkin is now 3 months and has shown many signs of now needing good sleep environment instead of just napping on mum. Anyone got generic tips for managing the older kid (4 years) when baby has to nap? We’re only just starting the process now of swapping from “mum-mattress for every nap” to “cot naps at least once a day”.

Have you read on the “quiet time” concept? Does something like that work?

I used TV time to do that. My older kid got to watch one show a day and it was during the time I was putting baby down. She was glued to the TV so I didn’t worry about her. Depends on how you feel about screentime.

Do you have special toys he can only have when the baby is sleeping? Pumpkin isn’t mobile yet but anything that would be a choking hazard for her like Legos would be a good quiet time toy.

Hypothetically, if keeping your child out past 11pm changed bedtime from a disaster to 17 rounds of ABC a few ba ba black sheeps and some songs about Bonnie princes; would this be a suitable lifestyle choice until baby starts school? It is? It’s completely valid especially in summer when it’s always light? Okay good

Absolutely anything that’s working sounds good to me.

I’m currently trying to get my baby as much sleep as possible in the hopes that sleep begets sleep and we go longer stretches overnight again. Baby is basically here reminding me I have no control over my own options right now. Thanks kid.

You’ll get there! Hopefully soon ish. Recently I’ve been getting 3h stretches more often than not, and he’s almost sharing the bed nicely, and, just to extra brag, he fell asleep for nap without being rocked or nurse today. My mum says it took me until almost age 3 and he is doing it for the first time at 16 months!

Do babies grow out of infant seats before age 1 if they are slightly larger than average? If his shoulders get jammed in and you have to pry him out, is it time to look at convertible seats?

I think he’s gonna stay in this next seat for years and years, would love any tips on what is important or not. We drive once or twice a week, with longer road trips a few times a year, so not logging heaps of hours in the car seat.

Now that I’m vaxxxxxed, do stores like BuyBuyBaby actually have display models you can touch and try out? Or is it just more boxes but in a bigger box-shaped store?

Yes, we had to move latte out of her seat at nine months. Even though she was shorter than the stated height that the seat goes to, all of her height was in her torso at the time, so her head was within 1 inch of the top of the seat. Which overrides the other height measurement. as for shoulder width, make sure that you have the infant insert out if there is one for your seat.

Bye-bye baby is the ultimate place for seeing the car seats in person and strollers as well. Target has a fair number on display as well. But buybuy BABY has the largest selection I’ve seen in person anywhere by far.

Oh, and the prime day sales and target deal days are pretty crazy right now. I know that people are getting the Grayco extend to fit for the cheapest price anyone has ever seen through Amazon right now. I tend to be a little iffy on ordering car seats through Amazon, but it’s truly an incredible deal.

I’ve never seen a BuyBuyBaby - not in the Midwest, I guess? We went to BRU (do they still exist?) where they had lots of car seats and surprisingly a guy who knew all about them and was really helpful. (And then we had to replace that seat twice because of a car accident and then the car was stolen and the little thieves threw the car seat out…)

But I just bought a Graco booster seat from Amazon and it was fine.

Me, typing into internet search engine: “how to make baby nap for longer”
Results: “Once your baby is 6 months old…”
Dang it.

Me, again typing into internet search engine: “how to reduce night wakings”
Results: “So, once your baby is 6 months old…”

Ok, ok, I get it, 3 months old sleep however they sleep. To be fair, the various useful websites did outline what to practice to set up the potential for good sleep once baby is 6 months, and we’re already doing that as far as I can tell. Like most things, it’s a waiting game. Chocolate will get me through this.

It’s the baby side of Bed Bath and Beyond, playing off the “BBB” thing. They do have a LOT of stuff, generally.

@LadyDuck, I was never more amazed in my life than when my first kid started sleeping mostly through the night and I felt like a real person again. I’d thought I was fine, and then my body was like “oh, no, we’ve just been running on adrenaline and hope, NOW you’ll feel better.” And now if I get less than 6 hours of sleep a night I want to die, haha. I have no idea how I made it.

Babies gonna baby… but maybe the mum could sneak in some more rest? Are you exclusively breastfeeding straight from the tap, or are you set up to pump/formula for one feed (that Ponder or maybe a very very nice friend or family member could handle)? We did this once or twice a week early on and the occasional break for me to sleep 6 hours in a row was heaven.

In my sample size of 1, four months old was a major turning point and then 6 months another one. Hopefully you’re almost there? :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:

One of the things you can do early is be sure their circadian rhythm is set. Strong signals. Morning sunshine, evening dim, dark overnight with only warm tone dim lights for during care. No TV/minimal phone screen if you’re up with her if you can.

I think we started reading Precious Little Sleep around three months and even though a lot of it was “by six months…” I think it set us up for good sleep habits. I really liked that it wasn’t all or nothing with any particular method and talked more about how and why baby’s sleep than anything. Pipsqueak has been an amazing sleeper since about 4 months…until this week when she caught a cold on top of maybe the 8-month sleep regression? I’m hoping she figures it out again soon!

I haven’t read her blog but I’m guessing you can get most of the advice for free there: https://www.preciouslittlesleep.com/3-6-month-baby-sleep-survival-guide/
