Random Questions, Parenting Edition

I also sit like a pretzel, and used a pack of diapers as my nursing footrest! Very classy.

For seat depth maybe a rolled up towel behind his back?

He’s fine now since the last growth spurt, but will keep in mind for the next one, whenever that happens

This isn’t a question, but an FYI, because I definitely didn’t know until someone told me.

The stimulus plan that was just passed includes an increase for 2021 to the Child Care Tax Credit, and also lets employers increase the amount of money you can contribute to a Dependent Care FSA from $5,000 to $10,500. If anybody has kids in daycare/childcare, you should look into it.

The actual text for Dependent Care starts on Page 10.

@anon51297825 I think you’ve mentioned maxing our your Dependent Care FSA?

How do I convince my kid that we have to follow dst. Or unfollow it. Whatever we did. But also ONLY at bedtime because the sleeping in is a+

I have no answers. However, I do have a meme to ease your sorrows:

I don’t know.

We’re trading less free time at night (8:30 pm bedtime) for a more reasonable wake up (6:30 instead of 5:30)

Also, I had a nightmare last week that the clock was changing the other way and we needed to start everyday at 4:30 am instead.

Oh nooooooo

Thanks for tagging me. I’ll have to ask HR if they did this. (Ridiculous that companies get to decide…)

Yeah, I’m not sure what’s up with that.

Honestly, I don’t know anyone who pays for child care who only spends $5k a year, so increasing it would be nice. My HR department said they’re “looking into it” when I emailed, so I still have no idea what I get to do.

I’ve told every parent at the company I know to email HR. Hopefully if people bug them, they will do it!

That’s a really good idea. I might do that as well

So I work for a company who administers dependent care FSAs. Your HR is likely looking into it because the administrator is scrambling to figure out the system functionality of the whole thing. There us also a subsidy for COBRA(what I do at the company) that we are scrambling to figure out as well. Basically what I am saying is have patience with your HR!

I got a “we are looking into if we will be changing any of our plans” reply.

They are doing FSA carry-over, but no word about new elections. Which seems really unfair for those of us who planned to NOT be allowed to carry over.

Any experiences with a baby that doesn’t care about crawling.

Waffles hates tummy time. He has demonstrated the ability to roll a hand full of times both ways but doesn’t really care for any of this back or tummy business and prefers to loudly object to it all and find a way to stand up.

He is an excellent sitter and very good and demanding people come close so he can use their limbs to pull up and stand. Most recently he has been experimenting with holding onto something/someone with one hand and bending over to pick things up, and also letting go of his support and attempting to stand solo which he manages for a moment before falling on his butt.

I’m pretty sure his big sister was crawling well before doing all those things.

I’ve learned things in the past about how babies really need to crawl for developmental reasons. They won’t be able to do maths! They’ll end up needing crawling therapy at school age so they can manage in a classroom, etc, etc.

I am flipping between “it’s cool, he is doing his own thing” and “this is going to cause all kinds of long term issues”

He is almost 7 months.

So the first part to reassure you, is that kids can develop motor perfectly fine without crawling. There are some things that correlate with better outcomes if they did crawl, but based on what one of the PTs I follow on Instagram says, you can re-capture all of those by bringing them back to crawling when they’re older. So, if she skips crawling completely and goes to walking, you can buy a play tunnel and make games that involve her crawling through things. That will strengthen the bilateral locomotion stuff that she should be gaining, and it’ll help achieve all those other sorta-milestones as part of that. But crawling itself is not considered a necessary milestone, at least for the American take on it, the CDC ages and stages questionnaire.

Motherhood and Milestones talks about it. She’s pro “try to get them to crawl” but also talks a lot about the kids that don’t etc.

A little younger than Waffles at 5.5 mos (4 mos adjusted) but Baby Spore also doesn’t love tummy time and is much more interested in standing/flopping over than crawling. He likes tummy time a lot better if he’s either at eye level (bed or couch vs floor) and watching us do something interesting, or outside with grass and dirt to stick his hands in. Also, his patience for it has extended as we started propped up a nursing pillow at first and gradually mixed in flat-tummy time. I had read that about 5% of babies skip crawling and since he’s otherwise very active I was only going to worry about it if his pediatrician was concerned at his 6 mo appt.

Pipsqueak (5 months) has a similar temperament. She spent a week working hard to roll back to tummy and once she knew how to do it decided that it was overrated. She hates tummy time and rolls out of it constantly while complaining. I think the reflux makes it especially uncomfortable for her. She loves standing and would like you to hold her hovering over the toys she wants to play with 🤦. We’ll see if she ever comes around or goes straight to walking.

As I understand it, I crawled for about a week or so at 9 months and then insisted on walking only. So, anecdata for the kids turn out fine. I’d be inclined to leave toys he really wants where he can’t get them and so on, but otherwise not stress too much (hahaha so much easier said than done… :expressionless:)
