I decided on the internet visual instead.

New question - kinetic sand is all over my floor. It is winter, before snow. Is all sensory play just code for trash the house?

Yes.

Yes.

Not if it’s outside. Then it becomes trash the backyard AND the house.

Yes. Usually my preferred sensory stuff is “we are outside here is dirt and or water” also my favourite place for paint. But we firmly need full winter mittens right now, and nature is not providing much snow at the moment. Enough to lick off a chair, not enough to really play in. Dead leaves are a bit gross. Even the playground sticks are mulching and mushrooming.

Nursery school said he loved a shaving foam activity. Maybe that could be naked in a cold bathtub followed by a bath

Oh yeah I meant, when we try to reduce mess by taking it outside, the kids just trash even more of the place.

They sell stuff called funny soap? Silly soap? Next to the bubble bath in the store anyway. It’s in a can like shaving cream and probably is shaving cream, but I think it’s Mr. Bubble branded. Anyway, it can be played with in a nice warm bath and often absorbs a long chunk of time.

Snow outside will get tracked in a make a big mess, too.

I do a big bin of rice, which still makes a mess but is easier to clean up than kinetic sand.

Plastic tablecloths underneath this stuff really helps. I like cookie sheets with cornmeal on them and a bunch of little trucks, but you’re still going to have to sweep the kitchen afterwards.

Do you have an outdoor water table? I used to move ours inside for the winter and use it with shaving foam or water or kinetic sand or whatever. In the kitchen with a painting drop cloth under it.

The most success I had keeping a sensory bin inside was a bin, inside a kiddie pool, on a sheet. She still managed to make a mess though :joy: and mainly isn’t that interested unless it’s snow/mud/sticks/water.

OH wait, I guess her potions are sensory! Water. A drop of food coloring. Beakers and droppers. That keeps her happy a long time. Gets water everywhere but all I need is a towel at the end and that’s pretty easy comparatively.

We just got one! My parents got two at the side of the road in October. Maybe I will bring one over months early and clean it up. The specific location thing might help (bins that I repurpose from elsewhere don’t seem special enough for listening. Or the consequences of doing more with the fun thing are worth the fun)

I found the water table worked well because it was kid standing height and not easily movable.

When I was feeling particularly brave or the floor really needed a wash, I’d fill it with warm water so they could have ‘summer play’ in winter.

My deadlift enthusiast disagrees :joy:

(But yes I’ve heard great things about water tables inside not just from you! I still need to try it)

Mine tried to climb in.

Oh one of mine definitely climbed in. I figured that was part of it though.

Ours is a flimsy plastic that would definitely break if she actually climbed in. Clearly should have gone an expensive wooden one.
