Jesus yes. Some days I wanted to physically peel the skin of my husbands face out of rage.
A big protein rich breakfast helped this, shockingly, and I’ve since mentioned it to 2 other people having rhe same thing and they saw improvement. Could be effed up Hanger? ETA and yes any time of day improved
The first time around I felt like my mood swings were mostly due to hunger insomnia. Like, if I get woken up at 3am every day, sure I’m going to be irritable. It was also deep into 2020 so I was grateful for every human interaction, ha.
Last week I stayed up way too late reading Mika in Real Life by Emiko Jean and sobbed the entire way through. (There’s a lot about parent-child relationships.)
Oh, and two nights ago I had a 2AM meltdown because my ankle was throbbing enough to wake me up and Tylenol was only the approved meds list from my provider but the 2nd Google result said there was some risk which sent me into a spiral. I should know better than to ask questions of Dr. Google at 2AM. My husband offered to research it for me so I let him do that while I ate a banana, and he returned with two pills and a plate of warm pizza and said “It seems ok for short-term use” and I took the pills and fell asleep.
Nobody asked for this, but here’s my review of winter-appropriate maternity bottoms. My weird priorities: I do a short bike commute most days til it’s several degrees below freezing, my belly absolutely cannot stand pressure rn, I need a lot of options bc toddler smears food about half the time.
Arctic Lynx active maternity leggings - YES. I didn’t want to like these for the price, but they’re great. Zero compression on the belly. Smooth, water repellent surface. Survived a hike with lots of bushwhacking and thorns today, toddler food resistant, have worn 3 afternoons without washing yet. I sized up which might have been a mistake with the slippery fabric, they slip down when running. $$$
Seraphine thermal maternity legging - YES. Buttery fabric, warmer than they look, zero pressure on the belly. $$
Poshdivah maternity fleece lined legging (Amazon) - YES. Warmest of the bunch, super thick and windproof. I sized up and the over-the-belly part is still more snug than I’d like, but it’s very comfy when worn folded down. Bonus: pockets! $$
Storq - MAYBE - My first pair from 3 years ago was an absolute favorite, but between then and now the elastic has broken down and there are 2 bare spots mid-thigh. I ordered a new pair but it fits tighter, and price has gone up from $50ish to $80ish. I still like them a lot, but too thin to recommend for cold winter. $$
Uniqlo heattech maternity leggings - YES. A bit clingy and see though to wear on their own. But warmth is great and will be good as long underwear under jumpsuits or dresses. $
Hatch leggings - NO - I may have just gotten the wrong size but the proportions were all weird and the seams hit at weird spots along the belly. Fabric also felt too thin for any real chill. Didn’t feel worth the cost. $$
Ingrid and Isabel faux leather leggings - NO - I thought the faux leather would be somewhat windproof, but not true. Also, runs very small and snug and I didn’t love it enough to bother with exchanging. $$$
Old Navy maternity knotted soft strap overalls - YES. So comfy. Some years have pockets - find them used. Silhouette is vv casual so not the best for fancier things, but I’m still wearing the one I bought years ago and another one handed down from a friend. $$
Hatch nurse to errands onesie - YES. Comfy midweight sweatshirt fabric. Add some jewelry and it dresses up nicely – I wore this to Thanksgiving dinner. Easier than overalls bc you don’t have to think of a top (or figure out which ones still fit across the chest). Going to be a keeper even postpartum, pricey but I think cost-per-wear will be low. $$$$
I don’t need warm pants but I did need pants/leggings.
My sister gave me all her Lululemon align leggings that are too stretched out or pilled for her taste and they feel amazing - much better than my $20 motherhood maternity stuff.
Still need to figure out more warm-ish tops. Many of my fleece jackets are already not zipping up (and I’m only 18 weeks along!) My mom gave me her size L jacket so hopefully that’ll fit through the pregnancy.
For warmer climates/seasons, I loved these Storq overalls. Then you can keep wearing tops that won’t button at the stomach anymore.
For tops, this Uniqlo fleece jacket is super stretchy and I was able to wear it +40 lbs postpartum, and it also zipped up over my newborn. I still need to figure out tops. About half my tops no longer button across the bust I also bought a very baggy, very warm winter coat from Poshmark but it may have been overkill.
For bottoms I was willing to spend money because it really helps cut down on vomiting for me. For tops, I’m trying to do a mix of borrow/buy nothing. If I buy any tops, I’m trying to keep it to things that will work postpartum or that I can easily resell.
The good: found it where it should be and it had cardiac activity!
The iffy: So far I’m having a blob. She dated it half the size and 2 weeks younger than it possibly can be. Looking at numerous anxiety forum posts online it sounds like I am far from alone and they’re just So Small at that point and it means nothing! Rescan in 2 weeks. Long weeks.
No shedding that I can remember – it’s been a few years now though. I originally got it before pregnancy was really on the horizon, in my pre-first-pregnancy size XS. Now I measure at 39” bust, 34" ribcage, 39" belly at 16 weeks and it’s still very comfortable. The waist has a very subtle elastic, so it keeps drafts out but doesn’t dig into the belly.
My bust size puts me at L according to the size chart so it’s funny that XS still fits! It’s a little short, though. If buying now, I’d probably pick M and have plenty of room to get through 40 weeks. I hope they didn’t change the fit too much in the past years and that these notes are helpful.
I hear you on the toddler smearing… my most comfy leggings got soup on them last night, and because I’m filthy and WFH, I decided to wear them again today.
@galliver Sending good thoughts and many distractions until your next scan.
I don’t know if this is a pregnancy thing. Did anyone’s hair become abruptly greasy? Like I could go 3ish days without a shower before looking greasy before and now I get 24 hours if I’m lucky and it seems like a very abrupt change.
I find it quite rude that I have immediately started needing more food but abruptly liking less food.
Signed, the person who usually will eat anything but turned away brisket, pizza, butter chicken, and saag paneer for a snack before settling on plain turkey.
I swear. To. God. I didn’t feel this awful this fast last time. But my tests were darker then. Again, rude.
