Objects of Desire

100% agree. Late 60s cottage with high ceilings or GTFO.

Late 60s here is often shoeboxy… Honestly I want something so old that I couldn’t date it without stares on the street.

The 1920s houses in my suburb are reeeeeal good, but we couldn’t afford one. So 1940s it is.

New house is a sexy young thang, built in 1924. Current house was built in 1912 and past house/ current rental was built in 1902.

I sometimes dream of working on a house with everything to code and built in normal ways, with no weird surprises. But that isn’t my life.

Head injuries are probably less about the ceiling height, and more about odd sized door frames and weird twisty staircases which probably is more common in older places? There were some very… quirky places in my university housing that got me time after time and was probably originally at least Victorian

I’ve seen enough Escape to the Country to know about restored cottages and with low door frames.

I suspect this is an Australia vs. North America thing. Before air conditioning was common, it makes sense for Australian houses to be built with high ceilings to give the heat somewhere to go. Older American houses may have been built with cold as a concern more than heat. Plus, supposedly people were shorter back then. It’s even worse in the UK!

My house was built in 1828. I want to give @brute a tour of it. And a helmet, so he doesn’t injure himself too badly trying to walk through doors and under ceiling fans. I guess that’s my Object of Desire.

Not all of America. Old houses down here ferry commonly have twelve foot ceilings because cooling is much more important than heating.

Conversation with a friend today reminded me of how short I am. New item for the list:

I desire more seeds. I don’t need more seeds until spring/summer in 6 months. But the lack of seed availability makes me want more. I currently have 10+ packets of lettuce and more tomato and broccoli seedlings than I have space for.

I find your low battery upsetting.

Yep. My phone throws a tizzy if it gets below 15%. I went for a walk today with 22% battery and felt like I was living dangerously.

I want a mattress that is less than $600, and firm, and not memory foam (because so hot!!) and that I won’t hate. And I want it delivered to my house before May 1. This seems impossible, especially during an apocalypse.

You dream in technicolour, baby.

Good thing you have been a previous customer of the seed collection?

I ordered seeds the other day, because… we still haven’t built beds to plant into :woman_shrugging:

I went with lots of flowers since they’ll scratch the toddler’s itch to plant something and not take food seeds from people who actually have space prepared to grow food?
