Wow, that’s a smart watch?? Gorgeous.

Oh WOW that’s gorgeous…I have a black chunky clunker Garmin from 2014 that suddenly seems more defficient

I just looked it up, and it actually got quite a few bad reviews. Interface difficult to use, not properly tracking steps, only time is visible in daytime… maybe that will help you to not be tempted?

YES THANK YOU hahaha

I’m not suuuuper impressed with the Garmin gear I have compared to Wahoo gear but Wahoo doesn’t make pretty rose gold watches haha. I can imagine people used to the whole watch face being the touchscreen would tend to having trouble with this watch face (where it’s just the bottom).

Mostly though, I am bothered by the short lifespan of these devices even when they have glowing reviews. I definitely don’t need another smartwatch. If I come across a rose gold analog regular watch however it will probably make its way to my wrist in short order.

Oh yes, one review was that someone had bought several and they only lasted a little over a year. Killed my interest immediately.

And it doesn’t have GPS - which is basically what Garmin does best.

I wouldn’t buy that exact watch. I would buy pretty much anything in the Forerunner range (245, 645, 945) and some of the Vivoactive range.

I’d push you towards the Vivoactive 3 HR - https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/571520/pn/010-01769-09#

Which has plenty of smart watch features, HR tracking, sleep tracking and GPS built in (not just relying on phone).

And Garmin has actually improved the app over the last few years - it still isn’t as good as the Fitbit app - but then that is what you get. Fitbit is a software company who makes hardware, Garmin is a hardware company who makes software.

In the long run, the entire GPS market is on a trajectory to basically all be the same, with the same features and software. GPS Singularity type thing.

Even China’s biggest electronics company (the apple of china if you will) is making some good stuff. If my $699 AUD watch broke, I’d probably get an amazfit for 1/4 the price to replace it.

As always - the once source for all your smart watch information is DC Rainmaker:

@PDM for the win, because I just instructed The Wench to purchase the headphones.

Worst thread on a finance site ever.

I know I’ve spent more time reading DC Rainmaker than browsing Amazon in the past three years. Maybe more than any site but MMM and here :open_mouth:

I don’t need GPS on my wrist now that I’ve had a computer since 2018, so I shouldn’t have even wandered to the Garmin site in the first place, haha.

ETA I wonder if I’d even have noticed that watch if my rose gold favorite phone ever hadn’t up and died for no reason recently…hmmmm…

Also - I do like the Garmin app just fine. Definitely miss the stats sometimes. But enough that having that functionality makes my life better? I dunno.

Do you want to feel less bad about your Garmin? I have a Garmin Forerunner 305  (That I do not ever use, ever. No, it is not a smart watch. But it can map your run. Just like a phone can. But strapped to your wrist. Like a giant boulder. It is 10 years old and predates most phone GPS.)

Yikes…I have had the following:

Nothing as old as a 305 (released in 2006…) Does it even connect to the app? My 935 bluetooth and wifi connects to the app. It is a world away from the olden days of plugging in a cable.

Oh and the speed of connection to satellites is amazing compared to the early models. No more standing around waving your arm at the sky for 5 minutes.

Whoops touchscreen fail - deleted above

CalBal that’s pretty amazing! I think handheld GPS units were in my radar for hiking but not watches. Which reminds me I go through similar Want for handheld Garmin units yearly

I also really love that they watches are listed as ‘retired’. Like athletes who gave their best then retired. Maybe now sports commentators? Reliving past glories with other watches “ah, the Brisbane half marathon of 2014 - what a race” or “Bridge to Bridge Fun 2012 - good times”.

I spent so much of my early career standing around waiting for GPS units to find satellites in the sky. (I also used GPS back when selective availability was a thing, and the signals were scrambled for mere mortals civilians so that accuracy was pretty poor (but we had access! We used giant PLGR units. I worked for the feds.). So many things have changed in the last 20 years and the satellite constellation is so much more mature now. It’s kind of amazing to think back now.

I want a watch, and this thread reminded me. Not a smart watch, just a decent one with numbers I can read and no frills. A decent leather strap. I may have to actually hunt down a proper watch store.

I want hiking boots that actually fit and can handle 250# of human without the support giving way.

…is it the boot itself or the insole? Good insoles are $$$ but bf claims they made all the difference in getting his boots to fit right. And they’re cheaper than boots, anyway… Just a thought.

Only boots I have right now are some old work boots from construction. So kinda starting at ground zero

A good haircut is the best! I had to do a bunch of searching but I finally found a lady who charges $18 for a wash and cut, and she does a better job than all the $60 places. I haven’t personally seen a big difference in quality based on price, so take a look! Community Facebook groups might be a good place for suggestions, or for people who work out of their house on the side.
