Oatmeal with soy sauce, scallions, and a fried egg is great.

It’s just a grain, and you can treat it basically like rice for a surprising number of dishes. Bonus points playing with steel cut is nuttier and firmer- it’s a good Farro type grain then.

Oatmeal and Yogurt Law
  • Not an authority on applesauce (my experience is limited to the little store bought cups).

  • Apples are good in oatmeal, applesauce would be fine if you needed to thin it out?

  • Applesauce in yogurt would be just a little weird, more weird for cinnamon flavor, less weird w/cranberry or rhubarb, I think.

  • I guess basically it seems less than ideal for yogurt because it’s more watery and less sweet than, like, Raspberry Jam.

  • Muesli is a cold cereal, consumed with milk (sometimes yogurt maybe). Duh

  • Savory oatmeal is bizarre, IMO. Also savory cream of wheat/farina. What are you doing, people!?

  • Plain, lightly sweetened rolled oats made with milk is delicious with a side of cheddar slices. I fully admit this is weird but also it just works. I don’t make the rules. :woman_shrugging:

I love savory oatmeal so much

I do savory oatmeal all of the time! Keep the egg runny. My favorite spice blend is cumin, chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. If you’re feeling SUPER fancy you can do fresh green onions too.

OK, but… If I was making those things I’d use rice. Or barley. Or farro. Like plain oatmeal wouldn’t be the absolute worst but I feel like any of those would be better so why would I use oatmeal?

(No, I actually get it, people have different tastes, that’s great.)

Lol the main reason is it is insanely fast and I like how creamy the whole thing gets compared to rice.

But I haven’t really cooked with barley or farro so I think that’s something I’ll have to try!

Do farro with your carrots!! We had a meal like that recently and it was delish.

Thank you for checking! I will shop around next time and see if I can find something similar. I’d love to get a longer life out of my liners!

Just did my kitchen shopping for this pay period. I am finally going to have these steamer liners. I have had my steamers for close to 10 years and every single time I use them I have to draw and then cut a piece of parchment paper for lining, and then cut stripes into it so air can get through. No more! I know it’s another low cost item but that was perfect for this week. I still can’t decide on actual cookware anyway, lol.

Ok I need some of you to yell at me. I’ve become fixated on this ridiculously expensive dresser for my bedroom. It’s the right size, the right style, the right color. “Sustainably harvested from domestic sources”. Nothing could ever compare. I will of course use it and love it forever. My justification game is strong.

…but also it’s new (so by definition not as sustainable as it could be if it was used) and amazingly expensive and does anyone really need a dresser that matches their aesthetic perfectly?

Reporting for duty to tell you that this is too expensive, though it is lovely. I see Room + Board stuff, often only gently used if not new, on Craigslist. It may take some time, but I think you can find one you like almost as much for much, much less!! :money_with_wings:

That’s way too expensive unless you’re already independently wealthy, IMO. Especially for drawers! It’s not like that money will translate into more comfort or enjoyment at all, and I think if the draw is purely the sustainability you could argue that a used piece would be even better! The design is simple so I was also thinking you could get something new like this made for a lot less just by giving up the brand name (especially if there are Amish in your area).

Now you have the perfect picture and all the details to begin your hunt for an identical piece.

Unfortunately no Amish that I know of in SoCal but that’s a good idea about looking for some custom. My biggest problem has been finding something that simple that’s not particle board. It’s annoyingly hard to find something without any flair (and I’m dreaming of something in light wood tomes or a sage colored paint…I could find walnut/home maple much more easily lol)

So agree. Particle board is everywhere and it sucks for something that you are opening and closing all the time like a dresser. I wish you good luck on your journey finding a less expensive dupe! Happy to help, too, if you want it.

Furniture counterpoint, if you want it!

We all have different spending priorities, and as long as you’re hitting your goals, there isn’t anything wrong with investing in design that you love. This is especially true if you’re trying to avoid particle board and want to prioritize how something is made. To me it’s in the same realm as if you were someone who were passionate about fashion, and you were buying a moderately high-end dress.

I’m trying to remember where you live: are you in a design-minded city? I’m not, and the used furniture market here doesn’t start out… wildly chic. Its only gotten worse since COVID delays mean that it’s been harder to buy new furniture.

My dad has a heirloom dresser, and it’s gorgeous and it brings him a lot of joy.

Idk! I know this is money saving mindset, but I’m team nothing is permanent and if you want to be surrounded by beauty, go for it.

This is written while I’m looking at my awful Wayfair particle board tv console!

So true. It’s baffling how many expensive places (West Elm) use particle board!

I have somewhat of an addiction to MeUndies underwear, because their fabrics are just so comfy and their underwear doesn’t pinch, and I just got an email saying all their PJ pants are 50 percent off. I have not yet bought any of those because they are $68 which is too much. But, I’d pay $34.

Point: I just tossed out my only pair of lightweight PJ pants because the ass literally wore through; all I have now is heavy fleece and flannel. And I’m moving to a warm climate. So if I squint hard this might be a need???

Counterpoint: I’m moving so anything I buy now has to get packed in a box. And I do not need any more stuff that needs to be packed in a box.
