Money Saving Mindset- Group Journal

We currently have doors (hate) , but the fabric curtain plus liner arrangement at my last apartment was one of the best decorating decisions I made at my last apartment. It felt so fancy, but the curtain was like 15 bucks from TJ Maxx and the cheapo liner took the hit of all the mildew and got laundered or replaced with no worries.

Re: breakfast, my absolute favorite is pastries, but barring that as a daily occurrence, I go for bread/toast/PBJ with coffee, or yogurt.

Oatmeal doesn’t stick with me unless I add a lot of nuts, and every time I go camping I’m like “this is pretty good I should have it more!” and the don’t.

Yucking your yum

I gotta say, though, you people putting yogurt in your oatmeal are super weird. If you want dairy in your oats just make it with milk! Cultures just make it taste… Off. Because it kind of is. Anyway. I don’t get it.

I add peanut butter powder into my oatmeal! It really helps it stick with you longer.

I love oatmeal, but I do add a scoop of protein powder (obviously for protein) + a little yogurt (for probiotics, because I don’t just eat yogurt by itself normally). I kind of like the tangy taste to go with my berries. They’re also good add-ins for cold overnight oats.

Peanut butter is also delicious, as @Economista just said.

ETA - always always always add protein powder AFTER you cook the oatmeal. Otherwise it’s completely disgusting.

Summary

Peanuts in oatmeal are also weird, sorry. (they aren’t even proper nuts…)

Could probably do protein powder. But also the pecan and almond cashew and flax and chia versions I made for camping were good! I just don’t think to do them at home.

I did not meet my house saving goal of $1,000 this month but I was able to put away $750 and I’m pretending I’m ok with that until I feel actually ok with that, lol. House savings is up to $13,750.36 and I really wanted to get $14k but I think if I transfer the remaining $250 now I’ll have to pull it back out to pay bills next month, so I’m not doing that. It is nice to know that we definitely don’t have to pull from that! Next month I will also probably not hit $1,000 but I’m going to try for the full $500 on the first paycheck like I did this month and then just put away what I can from the second one.

Been there. $750 is still really good!!

I just did our weekly grocery shop, except for milk, at the 3 small local and most expensive markets: 1 old time small grocery store, 1 old time small health food store, and the newer, bigger health food store. I’m happy to say that I spent $34.18 and got organic frozen veg/fruit (3), 2 huge chicken leg quarters, an organic beef shank steak, organic lentils, organic BE peas, granola, choc. covered almonds, fresh basil, & take/bake bread. The “bulk” buys were the lentils, BE peas, granola, & choc. covered almonds, a lot of the savings was that I bought minimal amounts of those. All of it was either bulk, on sale, or I knew it was cheap.

This is definitely a win!

We buy FABRIC shower curtain liners, not vinyl, and take them down every month or so and wash with the rest of the laundry. I occasionally bleach them, too, because I am on board with judicious use of bleach to extend the lifespan of things (I mean, they probably used bleach on the new curtain I will have to buy eventually…) They never last more than six months to a year, though, before they just get unbearably moldy.

That’s downstairs. The children never seem to have a moldy shower liner. So they get a new liner, and we put theirs in our bathroom.

Mine are fabric too. Last far longer than plastic, years. But at the most I wash mine 4x a year and no bleach.

I made dinner rolls to go with salmon chowder tonight…only to discover I did not have some key ingredients for the chowder. So I pulled some beef stew out of the freezer to go with the rolls for supper. I don’t like to shop more than once per week for perishables.

Thinking about my deck container garden and my raised bed garden this year. I need to test old seed to see if it will germinate. I hope so. I don’t want to spend money on seed if I don’t have to.

There are plasticy fabricky shower curtains that are my favourite. They don’t gross me out touching them and they last longer than cheap plastic. My house came with the cheap plastic ones plus liners and I hate it. But they are on the list to be replaced. one set is thrown out due to the rod breaking. Just one more set to throw out!

Woah, you’re getting years out of your liners? Can you link the type you buy?

is granola in yogurt ok?

I have been considering putting granola on my oatmeal for the texture…

I put it on top, not stirred in. So it doesn’t get warm or really mix with the oatmeal. Then I take a spoonful from top to bottom and get a layered bite. I love the mix of sweet + tart!

Yes, because it registers as a crunchy topping, not like oatmeal… about my “requirements” though.

I only accept fruit/jam sweetness with yogurt! (Honey is fine conceptually but I don’t like honey). Caramel, coffee, and chocolate yogurts or toppings are weird! (Except Yo Crunch cups, which barely qualify as yogurt let’s be honest…)

What about applesauce? I like to do rhubarb or cranberry chunky apples/applesauce with my yogurt. Yea or nay?

Rhubarb or cranberry goes with yogurt, but applesauce does not. obviously. Applesauce is by itself, maybe with some granola on top. Maybe coarsely grated cheddar if you need salty protein.

@galliver - I saw a recipe for a savoury oatmeal with a fried egg on top. I haven’t tried that yet. And my QA brain wonders where muesli falls for you.

Relatable.

Sure, if I can still read the labels! I’ll edit this post when they come out of the washer.

They were done when I got downstairs. NO brand name. They are both woven, not mashed fiber btw.

Both labels are the same. They say:

100% Polyester
Made in China
Care Instructions:
Machine wash cold with like colors on gentle cycle. Use mild detergent. Do not bleach. Tumble dry low if necessary. Iron on permanent press setting.

I just looked. Anything I saw like mine were at least $15 now… sigh. I should have bought a 2nd set. That said? I discovered I can put up the thing standing on the toilet. Much sturdier than standing across the tub with one foot on a tub ledge and the other on the tub’s edge! No more standing on my tippy toes!!! :older_woman:
