I like that Sesame Street added a new but a few years ago of Cookie Monster and his buddy having a food truck, they visit farmers to see where things like cranberries come from. Teaching the next generation that food doesn’t just magically appear.

Hubby wants a new shower curtain. The old vinyl one keeps growing mildew. He washes it because it’s too high for me to get down and put up. He washes it about four times a year. I asked if he’d used bleach on it yet and he hasn’t. I’m having him take it down and I’ll wash it today.

My question: will vinegar do as good a job as bleach on mildew?

I’m thinking if he wants a new shower curtain, he can shop for it and buy it. Otherwise I’ll get blamed for spontaneous spending again. He has no idea how expensive shower curtains can be! I pointed out to him a new one will have the same problem if it’s not washed regularly. We live in a very humid climate.

I wash mine with towels and normal laundry detergent, set on hot. It comes out fine. I try to wash it about once a month. We did get special mildew-resistant shower curtains at one point, I don’t remember if they make a noticeable difference or not because I just don’t pay attention to that.

And that it doesn’t appear magically wrapped in plastic too!

This seems perfectly reasonable to me.

All my shower curtains have come from the dollar store.

I use two shower curtain liners instead of a curtain and liner because of this. The 2 liners cost me about $20 when I got them a while back.

I got a black one and a white one. I swap which one faces the room, seasonally. The liners, unlike the curtains, are possible to find in mold-resistant fabric, or at least that was true when I got these, a while ago.

Oh yeah, I just wash them, like sheets, in the washing machine, no bleach. I do NOT put them in the dryer, but hang them back up, damp. Figure they were made to be wet, why spend the money, time & energy to dry them???

I prefer liners be replaced regularly but I get them at the dollar store so they’re super cheap. I don’t think I’ve ever paid as much as $5 for one.

liners are different from curtains?

I’ve never owned a liner in my life.

Yes! Liners are more resistant to mold and more water resistant whereas curtains are often not meant to be wet and are usually not mold resistant.

So why the hell would anyone have a curtain? Is bathroom mildew fun?

If you have a liner and a curtain you won’t get mildew. The liner is for function the curtain is for form. But you could totally just use a liner if you don’t mind the aesthetic!

We just buy cheap plastic shower curtains and throw them away when they get mildewy. Also only one bathroom has a curtain the other has a shower door so we ain’t to fussed about it.

That also works!

My shower curtain. (Maybe it isn’t a curtain. I’m learning things) is from the dollar store and made of plastic and has pink flamigoes on it. It looks cheesy and cheerful and would be confusing if paired with another curtain that was in the shower but somehow had to stay dry.

Is this like the decorative towel thing?

All references to shower curtains in the above should be interpreted to mean clear plastic shower curtain liners. We don’t use actual curtains. Our master bathroom has shitty lighting so if we had an actual curtain I’d be showering in the dark at all times.

I don’t know about decorative towels but I’d say it’s more like the difference between a comforter and a duvet with a duvet cover. Plastic shower curtains are usually used without a liner (comforter) whereas fabric shower curtains are used with a liner (duvet + duvet cover). The cost difference is negligible IMO, having done it both ways. I feel the clear curtain people because I’ve had a lot of dark bathrooms as well. Those are more expensive than opaque liners too, so I actually spend less now with an opaque liner and fabric curtain than I did with a plastic clear curtain with no liner.

This is the situation here too. We need a clear “curtain” or we’d be showering in the dark!

I like to bleach mine at least once a year, but I think a few hours soaked in vinegar might help for the washes in between. Worth a shot, and probably adds a boost to the soap washes!

I have a fabric shower curtain that hangs outside the tub just to be cute and a clear plastic shower curtain liner that hangs inside the tub to keep water in. My rings have inside and outside hooks so it’s easy to remove just one to wash.
