That episode made no sense at all. None of the numbers added up and there was a bigger absence of logic than usual. I wish he had challenged them to actually do real math.
I was confused about that too! She didnât say she got pushed into buying it or anything so itâs weird how she made it seem like she never wanted that house?
Also I 100% think itâs about the beach house. If itâs private beach, which I assume it is, everyone would know they are renters. I think that would bother her. In some places there are tag checkers on the beach but they know all the owners, so non owners have to wear tags but owners donât.
I also wished he asked why they didnât buy an $800k house, or something. Like, if they were so concerned about spending why not buy a perfectly nice still expensive but less so house? I can almost guarantee itâs because of âschool districtâ. So they probably live in a town where they are in the bottom 25% of rich, which could be why she feels so stretched thin compared to other people.
Re only rich peopleâŚI wonder if this is mainly his private coaching clients, at least in the initial episodes? From his materials I feel like his thing is that he gives away or has a book about the basics, and then has 0 guilt charging a billion dollars for courses and so much more for private coaching. Which I get. The basics are pretty basic, and making too much money off the basics is scuzzy. Like even his build a course course is expensive and you have to sign a waiver saying you have no debt. And when he shows his own sales funnel he shows most of his sales are repeat customers. So if youâre doing 5, $5000 courses, youâd better be seeing a huge success. I really would love to see this approach with much lower income people, but it would need to be a different host
I didnât quite realize that the goal was a second home. I want a beach house so we can downsize and save money from selling the current house and then have a chill retired life on the beach. I assumed that was her goal too because why wouldnât everyone want the same thing I do? Buying a second home in Carmel? Even a shack is gonna be millions of dollars.
Thatâs interesting I didnât know about any of his coaching services! Dave Ramsey has been around for a million years and I listened to his show for a long time. I know a lot of people dislike him for religious/political reasons but I think he does a good job talking to really diverse earners. Lots of lower earners and people with tons of debt too. Like I have a lot of friends Iâd send his show to, and have, but I wouldnât send them this show because it would be like a massive slap in the face.
Umm. Where is Carmel?
Ahhh that makes sense.
Can I just say as an Oregonian how weird private beaches are to me?
Cute bonus when I followed that link.
Yeah itâs super weird. NJ is the first place I ever experienced getting charged to go on a beach, but I think there are private beaches everywhere. Basically beach access is only available if youâre in a house there. And there are no lots and often beach access is through yards or on streets with no outlet. And they constantly make sure no one who isnât supposed to be there wanders onto the beach. I bet there are private beaches in Oregon!

ETA2: I am wrong! Oregon Beach Bill
Omg, Ep. 1 Ilan, it feels like the kind of thing where he pays attention to another personâs needs for just long enough where they can get back to him.
Alyssa is being so good about being calm, collected and logical and he just seems like heâs trying to try but not quite trying.
And yes, I agree we need to address Ilonâs crypto stuff⌠Alyssa is being an entrepreneur. Ilon is gambling, and thinking that makes him better because thereâs a chance for a huge fantasy payoff.
Ugh, SHUT UP ILON.
I like how Ramsey breaks down baby steps in a way thatâs easy for people. And when people call him in really difficult situations, he puts on a caring âdad voiceâ and is pretty effective at being comforting while giving solid advice in most situations.
My issue with him isnât even necessarily the religion, itâs some of the specific products he promotes.
Thank you for clarifying this - the Carmel I know is in Indiana. California makes a lot more sense
Yeah itâs literally a right granted by the state that all beaches are public access.
I bet Iâm closer to affording a beach house in Carmel Indiana
Haha, I love his dad voice. I also feel like he gets genuinely happy for people when they do their pay off mortgage screams and stuff. Some of his products are such trash though, fully agree, that samaritan health system? Holy crap. It sounds like a nice idea but there are some insane clauses in that, like people who contribute get to choose which things they pay for, for each other. SoâŚyou can imagine what gets prioritized.
Same as an Australian. But then, thereâs a lot of beach here and I grew up going to ones that didnât even have lifeguards and stuff.
I sent this to a friend, not because itâs helpful, but because itâs great gossipy material and light âwtf? Someone really thinks that way?â Kind of listening.
New ep 23: woah, woah. You donât âinvestâ in your personal home. I take back my comment a few days ago about house buying being so important to Americans, it clearly is to this subset.
$425k/ year and a $1.3 mill house? Uh, I could afford a beach house on that salary and with that house. Itâs not even that expensive (hahaha Perth house prices).
She wants to rent their family home, but own the beach house. Someone else to deal with the maintenance. But sheâd still have to deal with maintenance on the beach house, and theyâd be there less so sheâd have to hire it out - yes, this is about the private beach thing.
Oh man she doesnât have a handle on her finances at all and just needs Ramit to walk them through a budget. She tracks her expenses but itâs hard? YNAB her. Oh, this is the $1k/ month savings people. They must have a lot of lifestyle or COL expenses, because I really want to see their budget and where the rest of their money goes
Hii itâs me, your Bay Area expat, with Carmel context. I would compare it to a Vail/Aspen/whatever the nice part of the Hamptons is, so its truly a whole thing and not just a beach town. If itâs not where Big Little Lies was literally set, itâs where it was spiritually set.
iâm dead.
