Grocery Hauls and Pantry Snooping

PS not a substitution, but a similar tasty vibe:

And no soy so I can eat it with fewer consequences.

ETA please ignore my horrific fingernail polish state

…everything?

So, traditionally one does a quick veggie steam in some rice vinegar. I like cabbage, but you can use almost anything. Serve it over rice, and use liberal amounts of chili oil with tiny, delicious black beans and tofu bits inside.

I also put it over salads, in soups, etc.

Perfect, it will fit right in with how I currently cook. My favorite thing to do is test sauces in ramen.

I’m a big fan of adding some to stir fry. But you can add some to plain noodles and still taste heaven when feeling very lazy.

Okay, for honesty. #nofilter

I’m only now realizing how much wasted space there is on the left side of the door:

The freezer used to be even less efficient. The door was filled with ice packs that we never used, that white bin was reserved for ice but never filled, and there was a coven of frozen figs from last year’s harvest. So in an already small freezer, maybe 1/3 of the space was unusable? Not a big deal pre-pandemic, but very much a big deal when trying to buy 10 pounds of sale cheese.

Shoot I forgot to snap my groceries but they were just eggs, potatoes, and carrots this week.

But here is most of my food storage. There are two bags of rice in another room and some snacks and fizzy water upstairs. There’s SO MUCH PLASTIC compared to a year ago but that’s what it is right now.

Fridge:

Freezer (mine is the left side under an ice cube tray and the pullout tray):

Daily use spices and oils. The big colander is now full of potatoes.

Pantry:

Baking and appliance and tea cupboard:

Which is also a fermenting/culturing/proofing cupboard this time of year:

And the last of the garden on the countertop:

Is that a frozen coconut…? And you feed raw?! Awesome!

And a pupper nosing around the closet because the door is open?

I’m so glad you pointed that out! I had missed it.

Food storage. We gutted the whole kitchen a few years ago and it’s 50% of the reason I have no interest in moving to a different house in my same town (that plus we’d have to spend well over $100,000 to get something noticeably nicer than what we have already have, and even then the kitchens tend to be meh).

Pantry with roll out shelves. I cannot overstate my love for this cabinet.

Small stash of kid treats

We kept our old fridge and put it in the garage. It’s not holding much right now. All the sodas in the door are actually water bottles to help the fridge maintain temperature, that reminds me I should move more back in there after tomorrow’s grocery run.

Freezer is also a bit thin right now.

Almost forgot spices. This used to be a completely closed off useless cabinet.

@Illathrael it is a coconut! I should cut them all up at once and then freeze but this is easier haha. I’ve done raw for years but two are now on prescription food so it’s supplemental. My cat goes bonkers for it; rabbit and venison are the only ones he can eat and rabbit is a clear favorite.

@turtlegirl yes! She is the biggest snoop!

@Elle van is on its way!

My haul for our no cooking, snacks only week (plus a little stocking up for when we do cook again): $102.50. I sure hope this lasts longer than a week. We’re working on some house projects that have a deadline so no cooking until that’s done.

Are you in the US or elsewhere?
I assumed US freezers have something designed into them, because I’ve only ever needed to defrost chest freezers and those tiny dorm fridge/freezer combos. Even as a kid with a really old fridge/freezer.

We had to defrost the fridge freezer when I was a kid, but that’s been a minute. My grandmother still had an icebox out in the shed (it was still good rodent-proof storage even though it was no longer serving the original purpose).

Today’s grocery shop. I didn’t have the energy to meal plan, so just bought what I knew Iwas out of or low on. Plus a few impulse buys. Those premade salads (lunch today and tomorrow) are my reward for showering, dressing, and going to the store. While taking this photo I realized I forgot bacon. Another week without making potato cheese soup. (Note: I bought the cheese for the soup.)

Grocery total: $39.47

Ooh what are the frozen beets for?

To eat? I bought them because @wintertell’s post on them above made me crave beets and Aldi only has them for a limited time. So I bought them and will figure out what to do with them later. I rarely fix fresh beets because I make such a mess peeling them, so I’m excited about frozen beets.
