This doesn’t belong here because I didn’t do anything to deserve it, but somehow my kid got the strongest sense of self and it drives me nuts but I’m so freaking proud of it too. She’s so much like me in a lot of personality ways, except I could always be swayed into things and she will absofuckinglutely not. It is very common to hear her explaining loudly, “No Mama I won’t eat dinner because it is MY BODY AND MY BODY DOES NOT WANT ANY DINNER. AND IT IS MY OWN BODY. YOU CANNOT TELL ME WHAT TO DO WITH MY OWN BODY BECAUSE IT IS MINE.” I mean, eat your dinner kid, but also. Go you. Don’t let them fucking tell you anything.
Tonight I fed my family (kids and adults) Annie’s Mac and cheese, apple slices, and roasted broccoli for dinner. I feel great about this.
I was also reflecting on how my family likes to recall the phases where I ONLY ate Vienna sausages, or bean and cheese burritos, or gnocchi with a specific brand of pesto sauce for weeks on end, and then would suddenly change to something new, right after my mom had gone to Costco to stock up.
I’ve been thinking about these things because of all the topics around feeding our children and supporting them in all other areas of life that have been coming up frequently.
So, id like to take a moment to celebrate that we’re all doing just fine. What did you or your kids eat today? No wrong answers.
Today my husband is doing bedtime! Which he almost never does because he is usually at work at bedtime. But I figured this would be good for all parties involved. I am making dinner for us adults. Baby ate a pouch and pretzels and she gave it five stars.
Kids ate cereal/pretzels and fruit from yesterday’s picnic for breakfast then they went to Grandparents’
And for dinner we had Korean hotdogs and bubble tea. Korean hot dogs are a new food for all of us!!!
My fridge has been broken for over a week and tonight we turned everything off for tomorrow’s repair. So dinner tonight was a combination of whatever’s shelf stable and whatever can be eaten from the freezer to save space in the cooler: half a meat stick, rejected (but attempted) coconut shrimp, half a peanut butter sandwich, grapes, and a baby yogurt pouch. Plus the last of the popsicles for dessert.
The adults had the coconut shrimp and grapes, plus tater tots. And popsicles.
My kid wanted an appetizer before dinner and I knew he was properly hungry and dinner wouldn’t be for 20 minutes so I just have him a PBJ and milk. When dinner was ready (pulled pork sandwiches and fries) even though he said he wasn’t hungry I just gave him fries and some black berries. He ate the berries and a few of the fries. (He’s been having weight issues so I would’ve preferred he demolished the fries. )
Today my kid informed me she won’t eat cheese or olives at school anymore her list of food categories is growing alarmingly short again. But, she will eat bell pepper strips and “morsels” (grilled chicken before any sauce/orher components of dinner join it) only if she’s on the couch watching her pre dinner tv. So we feed her those then, (the same items on her plate get ignored) and I can feel like at least a little bit of non-fruit nutrition enters the child occasionally. She also will basically only eat waffles for breakfast now, and I’m so grateful from the get go my husband has been making those loosely off a NYT recipe that involves tons of butter and milk and we freeze them ourselves. I keep telling myself some day she’ll eat more things again. Right? She has to? I meant it’s been more than 2 years of a narrow diet but. Some day?
Oh and the baby was asleep during breakfast and also lunch so she only had dinner today. Leftover Trader Joe’s shrimp burger patty for allergen intro yesterday and today. She enjoyed it but then her eczema suddenly worsened at bedtime soooo we’ll see. She still can’t eat any dairy or soy. And neither can I, as a result. Speaking of limited diets over here…
But we’re surviving so that’s what counts eh?
It counts!
We had McDonald’s after swim lessons to celebrate me getting some actual mini swims done.
(P.S. my diet began expanding in a way I and my parents recall at about age 8, which aligns with what I am observing in Duckling who is 7.)
I didn’t fully think through a meal, so I accidentally introduced two allergens at once yesterday. Oops! The gold star moment is that baby was totally fine, good job resilient baby.
@Bracken_Joy when did you start doing two meals a day? I’d like to start before 8 months if I can.
This kid LOVES solids and we have very regimented meals owing to already having an older kid. So she actually started two per day right at 6 months, whenever she was awake for 2. We plan to add a third around 9 months, a first snack around 10-11 months, then be on 3 meals and 2 snacks at 1 year old. With Latte I think we did 1 meal for a month or two?, then went up from there.
ETA my big things are: esp if consto, watch the solids (what are they, are they drinking any water with meals yet) and ensuring milk/formula comes within an hour before the food until 1 yr old.
Love this @sunflower.
Spore started yesterday by requesting green eggs and ham (he’s never eaten this) so we put lettuce in a blender with oil and water. He cracked and beat the eggs by himself and we poured in the “pesto” and scrambled the eggs.
Then I made a tactical error of adding apples and pretzels to his plate, so he ate no egg and no lettuce. Joke was on me!
I had leftover pasta and salad with a meal prepped chicken breast for lunch.
After daycare we rushed straight to an informal mountain bike race and both rode a lap. Someone was celebrating a birthday so he ate ice cream cake, a kind bar, and pretzels for dinner. On the way home we stopped for drive-thru chicken nuggets since our less processed costco freezer stash was gone. We prioritized woods and bonding time over vegetables for the day.
I have no idea what the baby ate. Husband was home with him in the evening.
Thanks! How crucial do you think the milk/formula timing is? Timing is already kinda hard with doing allergens around naps/bedtimes + nanny schedule, so it’s hard for me to track that extra variable.
I think it’s a bigger issue in one of two cases. One, the kid who loves food and so will eat a ton and then that reduces their formula or milk intake. And two, the kid dealing with constipation because starting solids can constipate them pretty majorly.
Makes sense! We got a food lover here too so I’ll keep that in mind.
I don’t think I kept suuuuper close track with the cuckoo but more so monitored her formula intake to make sure it was good enough.
Ok, I have tried but I think this will be a more achievable goal if this baby were on a bottle schedule or a nap schedule. It won’t work while priority is allergens as soon as possible after he wakes up.
Re water, he is still in the phase of pouring the open cup on himself or chewing on the straw in straw cup. Should we be giving him a little water in a bottle?
My understanding is no, unless your pediatrician tells you otherwise because of constipation or something
Thanks! Ok cool. I’ve been meaning to ask what amount of constipated is normal vs worrying, so I’ll email and ask about that.
For breakfast this morning one kid ate a bowl of cereal and the other kid ate a handful of grapes and 4 slices of cinnamon raisin toast directly from the freezer with butter on it. My ‘breastfeeding milk’ chest freezer is now almost entirely full Aldi cinnamon raisin toast loaves.
