Yep that looks like it. #sadpanda
Our plan of attack based on my afternoon of googling:
- Test the soil PH
- Make the appropriate adjustments if too acidic or alkaline
- Keep up consistent watering
- Hope for the best for future fruit
- Try to add calcium before future plantings if this crop is a complete dud
I just want one tomato hahaš¤
Leave the sad ones to ripen - not going to spread since itās a calcium uptake issue, and you can just cut out the dark areas and eat the rest if the whole thing doesnāt rot away. Make sure the plants get consistent water from here on - itās uptake, which means it is as likely to be water related (steady amounts needed for steady uptake) as it is a lack of the calcium itself.
But if you have some tomatoes that arenāt showing any/much damage yet, some mortar mix powder or crushed-up Tums sprinkled around the base and watered in wonāt hurt and might help.
Favorite plants for mosquito repellant? I know citronella is an option but wondering if thereās anything else I should look at.
Our new deck is awesome but the āgrassā area is 100% mulched so when it rains everything is soggy and the mosquitos and flies love it so I want to try to naturally mitigate that some if I can.
Why canāt you have citronella?
My research on mosquito repellent gardens a few years back basically said two things:
- All strongly scented plants are good - they confuse mosquitos and hide your scent
- Plants that attract a wider variety of insects to your yard will naturally reduce the mosquito population
You can try to create a dragonfly habitat if youāre super keen, but Iāve found that having a variety of plants and attracting a variety of insects was enough to bring in the dragonflies.
Do you have any control over whether that area is mulched or not?
Oops that was supposed to say IS an option. I was just wondering if there was anything else I should have on my list
I want to get more lavender too, and Iāve got mint and basil (I consider those strongly scented but maybe they arenāt?). Today was sunny and dry and I didnāt notice any bugs when we were out playing with a sand bin so maybe itās just when itās wet and muggy.
@diapasoun we can change it but itās the entire yard (though itās a small one). So it definitely wonāt get changed this year. I want to see if thatās always a problem or only right after it rains. Weāve had about a week of rainy days so that was a contributing factor. I donāt want to make drastic changes until Iāve lived here more to know whatās what.
Those totally count! Not sure about your climate, but rosemary is great, and anything citrus-scented (lemongrass, lemon balm, citrus itself). A common suggestion is to deliberately brush up against the scented plants as you walk outside, to āstir upā the scent in the air.
Oooh all of those sound wonderful too! I have two skinny box planters to fill out and a bunch of pots so maybe Iāll just go crazy with those and see what I donāt kill
This was enjoyable.
Nice to see someone with photography/videography skills put together a blog on gardening.
And itās Aussie based!
Ooo, Iāll definitely check that out.
Weāve reached the time of year where I wonder if I have live trees or interesting sticks. Another month and Iāll know.
A local gardening Facebook group told me that my beetles are bad and eating my peppers and basil. So now every hour after sunset I go out with a flashlight and pick 5-10 beetles off plants. I think my neighbors think Iām creepy.
This morningās harvest. I have a backlog of one dozen zucchini and some kale to work through today. Almost enough tomatoes to make some sauce or a batch of canned tomatoes!
Package of perennials arrived in the mail today and I picked it up early enough, that Iāve planted them out already.
Jekkas Thyme
Duck potato
Babingtons leek
Skirret
And I have some skirret seed to plant out too, but will wait til later in the week when I do a seed day and plant a variety of seeds out.
We have a baby, uhā¦ cucumber maybe?
Weāre happy with whatever it is, we just want it to be healthy.
Looks like a cuke to me.
Was planning on planting out a bunch of flower seeds today, but a quick check of the planting guide and a Google to confirm where flowers fit in the phases of the moon means I put it off til next week.
So itās clean out the bottom layer of the worm farms day. Plan is to mix it up with some cow manure and tip dress all the cane berry and strawberry plants, topping off with some sugarcane mulch. Got all weekend to get it done.
Got a lot of blossom end rot while I was out gardening today. I have not been good about watering and itās been HOT and DRY.
The green beans donāt give a fuck though. Iām going to grow more green beans next year.
