Every time I grow mint in a pot it gets weird and brown and sad. For why?

Not enough water? Mine does well under the garden tap where it gets frequent incidental watering.

@MonkeyJenga I have no idea, but thatā€™s what I do too and Iā€™ve always wondered if itā€™s rightā€¦

Iā€™ve always been a compost into soil before planting guy. Use it to improve the overall soil, increased organic matter, microorganisms etc. But that relies on having compost available during soil prep.

Don Burke says weā€™re all doing it right!

The gardening advice is still solid though.

Other people also have solid gardening advice. It sucks, I know.

I tend to do the same top dressing with supplements like worm castings, cow manure and so on, then cover it with a layer of mulch like pine needles, sugar cane or pea straw.

As for Don Burke, he also ā€œfoundā€ Scott Cam when he popped into a bar one day to top up his BAC.

Thanks folks! Seems like a lot of methods could be fine. Iā€™ll try layering mulch over it. Maybe. If I get really bored on a day when it doesnā€™t hit 100F/38C, aka not today.

My envirothon team in high school failed tree identification, anyone wanna help me figure out what kind of tree is in my backyard so I can learn how to take good care of it? Sheā€™s so pretty I want to keep her that way.

crape myrtle

Thank you!

Yours has a very nice shape. As for care, it really doesnā€™t need any. They grow like weeds here. If you are going to prune it to maintain the shape, do it in late winter/early spring, before the leaf buds break. Some people commit ā€œcrape murderā€ where they chop off all the limbs fairly low every year, but there is no need to do that (and it looks ugly while it is growing back).

Ok cool! Will it get crazy if I donā€™t cut it back? I like the shape/size now and it hangs over into my neighbors yard so idk how they feel about it. Low maintenance sounds good.

I just want to keep this view while I do dishes:

Thatā€™s a very pretty view!

It might be good to talk to your neighbor to prevent them getting annoyed and taking it upon themselves to prune your tree. My crepe myrtle hangs over a fence into a shared parking lot, and someone gave it a really ugly haircut from their side last spring. The tree survived fine, but looked really awkward for the winter - there were other ways to prune it that wouldnā€™t have looked so bad!

On another side of my garden is a very vigorous vine. We mentioned to that sideā€™s neighbor that we would trim it anytime they wanted, they asked us to last month, everyone was happy.

Yeah that sounds like a good plan and a good way to meet the neighbors!

Iā€™m perplexed. Thereā€™s a spot in my garden where itā€¦ looks like someone just dumped a pile of extra dirt in it? Thereā€™s like way more dirt. I donā€™t understand what happened? I guess maybe the wind blew it overā€¦ into a 2x2 pile??? Or a neighbor came and dumped extra soil in that spot?

Iā€™m so confused by this.

On the bright side, I have a BEAN and a ZUCCHINI near ready!!!

I pulled up all my lettuce because it was threatening to bolt. I dropped 5 gallons of lettuce on my friend who said they would ā€œtake all my extra lettuce.ā€ I clearly interpreted this as a challenge.

Tomatoes tomorrow or the next day, depending how ripe I want them. Corn every day.

Yellow squash are producing again, but still no zucchini. Weird year.

In what pattern do yā€™all pick herbs and leafy greens? Bottom up? Top down? An entire stalk at a time or dispersed over the whole plant/patch? I am interested in some intersection of taste/tenderness and keeping the plant looking cute.
