Deer have destroyed our front yard. They’ve torn up the grass and browsed our euonymus shrubs to nothing. Time to get out the deer repellent spray…and hope for the best.

I stored 33 different types of dahlias this winter and only lost 1, and that’s because there was only 1 tuber of that variety. I’m very happy with that since I had to makeshift my storage and move them around to different places at work. I did lose some that I had multiples of but I don’t mind that because I only have space to grow 1 of each. I’ve got 3 bags to share with people too, none of which are marked so they’ll be surprises. Now I have to go out and plant them along with the 10 that I grew from seed.

Today’s haul was a mix of whatever looked interesting. I’ve got spots to fill where things died over the winter. I also got 3 nice hanging baskets for my porch and a couple to give my mom. In a few weeks I’ll go to a couple different nurseries in the opposite direction to see what I need.

I bought and planted a lot of plants this week, the perennial beds are looking much better now that empty spots have been filled. And today I planted so many seedlings! My back really hurts! I do have a bunch of zinnias to do tomorrow, but the majority is done.
My vacation is over, and I’m sad. I’d really like a couple more days.

I have a fern problem. Do I cull the ferns in the 3x3 directly under the witch hazel, or do I keep them contained in the box and take out all the ferns in the foreground? Or I say it’s too established already, and deal with it in the summer once they’ve died back a bit?

Speaking of witch hazel, what sort of location (sun/soil) do you have yours, and does it like it? I just got one and trying to decide where to put it.
(I obviously don’t purchase according to any sort of garden plan 
)

The witch hazel is in dappled shade now, and will be full hade in a month. the ground is fairly damp and hummus, competing with a century maple above and below.
It seems pretty happy other than my bad pruning and some heavy lichen in spots. I’m letting it sucker so it can renew.
The garden is very darwinian, but the ferns are outcompeting the violets and the lemon balm, and it looks like the lungwort isn’t back this year at all. Solomons seal is also moving from its corner, so I should think about it too

We’re out screening soil to put back into a raised bed. We put hardware cloth underneath two layers of landscape fabric. Now screening pebbles and tree roots out of our soil for the beds. Finding a lot of worms. That is good
Your ferns look pretty to me. Are they ostrich ferns? Those are edible as fiddleheads. Yours are way past that stage, but maybe something to consider in future years.
My ferns are huge cinnamon ferns. Hard to get rid of. But I’d rather have them than the goutweed they’re competing with!

I have lettuces, and sweet potato planted as winter crops. We also planted some pea and silverbeet seeds, hopefully those sprout. Plus an unknown curcubit. I’ve put many watermelon seeds in that bed but there’s a chance it’s paddy melons from the sheep poo I’ve put in.
I’ve got 2 raised beds with legs to have a go at turning into large selfwatering pots, too, so hopefully I get to those in a couple of weeks.

Me too! I enjoy growing sweet potato but resent the space it takes up in my limited raised beds. And the time it takes. It better be making me a buttload of sweet potato because I can buy that for 99c/kg at the fruit shop.

watching Jude make a garden pond on YT, and I am sorely tempted to go to the plant place this afternoon, but I should give it one more week.
I have pulled out a ton of big root geraniums and more of the ivy and vinca in the front yard, plus I cut the grass by the stairs, so we now look semi-intentional instead of just overgrown.

I’m attempting to grow some mushrooms! Now I’ll wait a year and see what happens! I’m expecting this to totally fail because there are a lot of factors that aren’t ideal but it was fun and I’ll learn.
