I think you need to use your quarantine time to catch up on harry potter, either movies or books. You can read the first two to your youngin (after that they get too dark for a 4 yo).
I think of myself as a Gryffindor in real life if pressed to pick, with a mostly Ravenclaw past. In terms of my financial character I am definitely a Hufflepuff with a Gryffindor past and too much Ravenclaw pragmatism to give as much as I want to charity right now.
I think it’s funny how with HP houses I definitely think a lot about my past vs. present houses.
I thought it was either Harry Potter or some Pratchett both of which I managed to admire from afar until now. Everyone assumes I have read them being a bookworm and a geek. I watched the first Harry Potters in French but it was a lifetime ago. I wonder if there’s a simplified version that I can read for LG. He’s almost 5. That will help me not feel so ‘bizarre’ when my ‘bro’ colleagues start talking about it.
I don’t think there’s a simplified version, but I find 5 a decent age to start, 6-7 better. If they’re a kiddo who is gonna wanna read them all quickly, age 9 or 10 is better. @RamonaQ might know about some HP age recs.
I’ve read the first book in french, but it was a very very long time ago. I would not be able to do so now, so no estimates on reading level/subject matter.
Yeah, I would recommend 6-7 at the earliest for HP. Older if they are more easily scared or sensitive. And the books definitely get darker as you go, so pacing them at 1-2 per year maximum if you start young is a good idea.
I don’t think there’s any simplified versions, but there are gorgeous illustrated editions of the first few books. They might only be available in English, I’m not sure.
I read the first 4 or 5 HP books in French a couple of years ago and it was a really good way to brush up on a rusty second language. And to learn some new vocabulary that never came up in day-to-day conversations in the muggle world!
I am pretty solidly a Ravenclaw by all measures. There are a lot of Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs in the library field.
I’m going to have to admit I’ve never read the books. I did watch one of the movies once, but that was more because a cute girl liked them (adult girl). I think I was a few years too old when the first book came out? Maybe 1998? I was 15 and not into fantasy/magic. I do get it though - massive part of my friend’s lives. Formative books, like friends for years. They had some Harry Potter stuff at their wedding. And their rather cute toddlers have definitely been dressed up as harry potter.
I probably won’t circle back around to them now. Not when there is so much science fiction with space ships to read.
I’m a hufflepuff IRL and probably a financial hufflepuff too. Financial ravenclaw comes second but I always eat my lunch on time so financial hufflepuff wins.
