Financial Hogwarts Houses Central (was "March of Time" Tracking Challenge)

Yeah I NEVER forget to eat. Don’t have time occasionally, but forget? no way, haha.

Gryffindor:

  • liking what you do for work is way more important than the salary

Ok that’s me ENTIRELY, and a bit more accurate than the Hufflepuff “works in an underpaid but important field”

oh the hufflepuff doesn’t always like what they do for work, they just think it’s important that someone does it, and they’re trained in it

I think for me it’s a pretty strong balance between needing at least some of my work to feel important and actually liking what I do. At the very least what I do needs to align with my values. So I guess I still feel I’m somewhere between those two modes? I have seen a few discussions lately about the human need for a sense of purpose and feeling needed, and that a lot of the current reorganization of work is very hard on people in that way in that it takes away that sense of contributing. It’s made me feel especially grateful that I do have some work still to go to and perform. Even if I was substantially compensated for staying home, I would be doing a LOT more poorly right now if I didn’t have meaningful work and the kind of bonding under fire I’m experiencing with the two coworkers I still regularly see right now.

I like that we derailed the challenge thread so hard it needed a title change

I was like “I should make a new thread” and then I was like…well, too late.

Digression on being a Hufflepuff

I’m a Hufflepuff, in general and financially. I used to feel bad about being a Hufflepuff because the house just seems so… irrelevant or something in the books. Some friends and I took a sorting test, and I wound up in Hufflepuff in part because I said I wouldn’t steal a bike even though it seemed to be abandoned. My friends said they would steal the bike and got Slytherin. They made fun of me for it. It took me longer than I’d care to admit to stop feeling bad about being a Hufflepuff. I’m no longer friends with people who try to make me feel bad about my Hufflepuff tendencies.

I think Rowling things very little of Hufflepuffs and it colours her writing. Hufflepuffs get shit done.

Before I was found unfit for duty it was really important to me that my jobs make the world a better place, or were at least morally neutral. I worked at Subway and in a call centre doing surveys, and those were neutral. Much more rewarding were the jobs in the homeless shelter, running the neighbourhood resource centre, enforcing employee rights legislation, investigating government wrongdoing, and so on. I needed to know I was one of the white hat people.
No longer being in the workforce is hard for many reasons, lack of purpose being a big one. I lost my white hat. John Wayne would shake his head in sorrow.

Hufflepuffs are the best. We’re the only ones who don’t secretly think that all the other houses are inferior. Plus we got those good snacks!

I totally get the feelings that hufflepuffs get made fun of. They were all the time in the books!

But we’re the best. We have legit the best common room, we always have snacks, and we’re nice to almost everyone.

Final notes:
I didn’t meet my goals, but this challenge was worth it just to see where I spend my time. Also giving myself a little leeway because of how chaotic things have been for the past few weeks.

I’ve invested in RescueTime premium to better track and put limits on my screen time. Paying attention to how I spend time has helped me get more things off my to-do list than normal, and I’m going to keep tracking.

ETA: This month I also found out that biking is a more efficient way for me to commute than public transit, and I hope that I can get back to it soon :bike:

Financial Ravenclaw checking in!

(Now that this thread has a new topic I can join in. Time tracking scared me off.)

I was reluctant to time track but now I’m annoyed at myself for missing out on the HP house chat.

If anyone’s interested, we wasted a lot of time at work last year sorting people according to this rather in depth system https://sortinghatchats.tumblr.com/post/190658528257/the-sorting-hat-chats

(also Hi I’m a Ravenclaw)

My niece was in a play at her school called “Puffs” and it told the story of 7 years at Hogwarts through the eyes of the Hufflepuffs. I would definitely recommend.

I think I took this quiz a ton of years ago, but results today are Gryffindor Primary with substantial Ravenclaw competition, and solid Hufflepuff secondary. That feels pretty right to me!

I am so much a Hufflepuff in real life (Sorting Hat Chats, which I truly love, gives me Puff for both primary and secondary), but I’m not sure what I am financially. Maybe Ravenclaw? I don’t actually know all those things but I know how to figure them out, or who to ask if I’m confused… which honestly sounds like such a Hufflepuff thing to say

I am here for this. I’m a Ravenclaw and suspect I am also a financial Ravenclaw. ALL THE SPREADSHEETS.

I put this on twitter and there are some additions.

Taxes:

  • Ravenclaws always have their tax documents in order
  • Gryffindors have a pile of receipts in a shoe box and they buy a beer for a ravenclaw to help them file the night of the deadline.
  • Slytherins definitely have “a tax guy”.
