Dragged all the empties up to the Porch today, put a post on the neighbourhood FB asking if there is a team doing a bottle drive, and all were collected within an hour
Posted an old toy on marketplace, it is being picked up at 5.
Listed two more items on marketplace. If they aren’t gone in a week, they’ll be donated
Went through the extra books for the little library, and condensed from three boxes to one, with a box going to the donation bin this week.
Have been on the fence re getting rid of a pair of PJ pants that I’m not wild about and are very old. Put them on, discovered that the ass is literally worn through in spots. OK then, out they go!
Started this morning by tripping over a book which had fallen – one of DH’s computer books. I researched it, put it on his desk chair and told him what I’d done. His call to keep or discard – it’s not worth anything. It’s going to the dump.
DH put a serving of the curried squash soup I made for lunch into one of our soup crocks and it went “Snap!” and cracked clear through. It’s in the dump bin. The last spare we’ve got is in the pile for the dishwasher. I’m debating whether it’s worthwhile to get 8 more as we use them all the time… We break about 1-2 a year these days, but we’ve been using them for 10 years now, so I’m hardly surprised?
I was currently $25 short on my budget for being able to fill one kids RESP in January, but have sold a variety of crap in $5 increments over the last two days, and am now $5 short. This is motivation to find more crap to sell
Started going through the cookbooks with the idea that I need to purge about 1/2 of them. Difficult as there are some I use all the time, some I use for reference, and some which have ideas I want to pursue, but haven’t, yet. Especially with cookbooks, I find this difficult these days!
That’s a great idea, but no. Our library’s cookbook section is 2 or 3 shelves. The library itself is about maybe 1000 square feet, including 2 desks, a media room, a kid’s room, and the adult fiction/nonfiction. It is TINY. The first time I walked in I almost burst into tears. I was used to libraries in/around L.A. County, and this was the size of the kid’s section, and it’s the entire library for the town
Lots of interlibrary loans available. But most of the state doesn’t keep anything older than 5 years old.
A friend and I were discussing this, yesterday. I think the answer is to give up many of my “general” cookbooks: Joy of Cooking, American Peoples’ Cookbook, etc. That would probably cut at least 10 books, even if I restrict it to only the books I rarely use.
Found in the corner of the kitchen where I’ve been working: the missing container of brackets, shelf supports, etc. Eight of them are going away. Two, the plain sheet metal type available at HD or Lowe’s are in the recycling bin. If someone wants them from the swap shop, good for them! Two heavy duty Victorian shelf supports will go to the antique shop (and if they don’t sell, will come home again) and 6 plant hooks will go as well. Kept for the moment, until we’re sure we don’t need it: a chrome pole-bracket to hold hangers in the laundry room, 2 plant hangers, 2 shelf holders, and one huge harness or saddle hanger (like a GIANT coat hook) that I’m not sure if we’ll keep long-term or not. For a while, I was buying metal shelf brackets, etc, whenever I found something I liked. And I liked a lot of the old stuff…
DH used some plastic matting we had to further insulate the opening to the basement. Hurrah! I found 2 more plant hook things to take to the antique shop. The items slated to go into the basement did, so the house is less cluttered from that as well. Win!
I have a few old family photos and objects I’m sending to others in my family. Since my family and my past are trauma triggers for me, I have NO pictures of my parents, childhood home, old friends, or siblings up in my home. My husband’s family, childhood home, etc. are fine, but mine aren’t. It’s not their fault, it simply is.
Culled perfume samples for donation. A friend who works with unhoused folks says they’re popular giveaways. Put the ones I’m keeping in a single place instead of 50 mini pouches, baggies, and boxes. Going to try a new one every work from home day! Still way too many
Unsolicited advice, but we had a deep cupboard like that. See if you can find bins that fit for the stuff in the back. Then it’s way easier to access stuff. You just move a couple things in the front, and then can take everything out in one go. It was really a game changer for us. I ended up putting the stuff in the front in bins too, and just had a rotating bin system
I have a few bins hiding in the back, but I want more. I actually remembered a post about your bin solution to deeper kitchen cabinets and you’re definitely onto the issue with this setup!
ETA: the bins I do have aren’t clear, which does not help when the space is also super dark. Maybe a run to 5 Below or the Dollar Store is in order.
A local bike shop is collecting donations to distribute to fire victims, so my boyfriend donated his road bike that he never uses and was taking up an annoying amount of space in the garage! The bike shop was super appreciative, as apparently people are donating lots of kids bikes and not as many adult bikes.
I posted a bunch of fabric for free online, and it was picked up the next day. It had previously been sitting on my kitchen table for months (after 2 other unsuccessful pickups).
I’m passing along my old (but functional) food processor now that I have a new one. Got the new one this week and already have a taker on Buy Nothing for the old one!
