Decluttering discussion thread: share your wins, ask for advice, inspire each other!

The auction people came yesterday and picked up a car’s worth of stuff. It filled one parking space in the driveway.

Unfortunately, we still have far too much stuff or at least too much stuff badly organized; although I expect It’s actually both things: too much stuff and not enough organization!

Getting rid of that much is still an achievement! Celebrate every step!

being optimistic about the handoff going well, so I’ve already taken photos for the next pair I’m planning to list.

I think I am going to gather up all the Krewe 1 craft supplies I have that I don’t love and offer them to my krewe. We have a lot of new members, this can get them started.

optimism dashed, the boots were too small for my buyer. So back up posted. I might put up the other pair this evening as well

I have labelled 6 boxes of toys with my tape and texta. Have also found 4 boxes that random crap was just shoved into. Those are set aside until all the easy label stuff is done, and then I’ll sort them too.

Gave my printer and all info to a friend. She’s going to try and sell it online for me. We’ll split the proceeds.

The shelterlogic clean out finished today. Another batch of daylillies was moved, there’s one small batch left. We went to the dump with row covers (plastic + metal), cardboard, plastic sheeting, a dryer vent, etc.

Next step in this is to take the tarps/cover off the shelter logic frame, shorten and (hopefully) move it to where the station wagon had been. We’re not sure that’s feasible, but we need more storage than we’ll have until the new shed arrives and we do NOT know when that is exactly?

The motorcycle and I think at least the electric lawn mower are temp. stored in the shelter logic right now. But the lumber, misc. car bits, project pieces, etc. all were removed, and then put away OR taken to the dump. We have one batch of stuff stored in the van that’s earmarked to be donated to the gallery.

I have 2 bags of clothes to go into the local Methodist church’s clothing donation bin as well.

Put 4 chairs and a stool up on buy nothing. I hope they go, and if they don’t they will be donated. Also posted a shower niche we didn’t use for our project for sale.

One pair of chairs may be gone!

A friend stopped over with her teenage son and his friend, coming from comicon. The son mentioned he bought a sword at the show, and when they were leaving I asked him if he wanted this small blade thing and stand that was gifted to me about 20 years ago. He was thrilled. One more thing out of the house!

And since it is the season with cooler weather, I finished a scented candle and it can now go in the trash (to eliminate the teenage boy smell that was left behind- they weren’t even here for long and it just stayed!!!).

We have decided we want a new kitchen. The kitchen we have is in poor condition and really lacks functionality. It’s barely functional with one person in it but add in a second adult or kids, it’s infuriating. I like cooking too much to be getting so frustrated in there.

The issue is someone tried to fit everything into a small kitchen. There is a peninsula island, space for a French door fridge, full height pantry, dishwasher, wall oven/microwave stack, etc, etc.

In order to get more functional bench space we will have to sacrifice a lot of storage. The problem is that because we have had so much storage for the past 6-7 years, it’s all completely filled haha. I also don’t want to spend a heap of money on extra cabinetry to store stuff we probably don’t need.

So we begin operation clear out the kitchen. Why do we have so many mugs? Why so few tea spoons? Can we store some of the entertaining stuff in tubs in the laundry? We do entertain but only a handful of times a year.

Oh, those walk away on their own.

Good luck!

Yes to storing spares. It was a nice ritual going to the basement for the dishes and cutlery thr day before guests

I love the idea I’ve increasingly seen that the kitchen is for function, NOT storage, and you should respond accordingly. It wouldn’t make sense to keep a cord you use twice a year sitting right in front of your keyboard at work- so why functionally do the same thing in the kitchen? Even extra small appliances that are just used rarely but still wanted can be stored in basements/garages/what have you. No need to use prime real estate for occasional use items. Heck I had one apartment where we kept the blender in the top of our bedroom closet :joy: we rarely used it, but did for batch cooks once every few weeks- so it was kept, but out of the highest value real estate of our tiny kitchen!

Break the rules guys, it feels great :joy:

One of my solutions to too much kitchen stuff years ago was to eliminate glasses. We use mugs. We have used beer mugs, but found them too big. I got tired of buying glasses. Also got tired of buying dish sets, so started buying used diner dishes when I could find them. Still have a little of that left. But what’s in my kitchen right now for 2 of us is stoneware: 6 large plates (4 matching 2 not), 4 medium plates, 6 small plates/saucers, about 12 mugs, misc. custard cups, cereal bowls, etc.

I probably have as many “small bowls” as I have plates total.

Also, I eliminated a lot of the “medium” pieces. If I have a large scraper and a small one, I rarely need a medium sized one. I am about to eliminate my mandolin for a Japanese style one. One blade, one surface instead of a stack of stuff. My knife drawer has also filled up, recently, and needs to be culled yet again…

You are an inspiration.

I did two stints with Kiddo cleaning his room this weekend and he was surprised at how much better it looked after twenty minutes each day. Importantly to me, I now have an update on the crap he actually remembers he owns and the crap he doesn’t so I can smuggle out forgotten stuffies and a few books and random plastic toys this week when he’s at school.
