It me
Maybe this will be my service to the world. Once both my kids are in school and I have some time on my hands, Iâll just offer to friends to pick up donations for them and make them disappear.
I have done this for friends in the past, usually taking away unwanted baby gifts with me when I drop off food for them. Itâs so nice to have it Gone!
Seriously I bet people would love this.
I used up the 3rd bag of mulch. I put the potato boxes to bed for the winter. I tidied the beds where the potato boxes had been, now they just need their winter coat of fresh straw.
I tidied up the shelves that sit at the front of the greenhouse. I used one of the galvanized buckets to contain the bamboo poles which had been leaning against the greenhouse. Need to buy a piece of sewer pipe for those, but NOT todayâŚ
Talked to DH about using the pallet the mulch was delivered on for the next transfer of the wood pile from out front where the neighborâs son had split/stacked it for us to back with the rest of the wood⌠one big pile instead ofâŚ
I decided what trays/plastic pots I will eliminate and put them all in one place so I can grab them the next time we go to the dump.
Gone!
I filled in the spaces in the stone stairs as best I could with the stones Iâd set aside for that.
And, and, and⌠?
And, weâre taking a load of brush to the dump!
Got through the 2 boxes of books that had been on the porch. Two immediate outs,
another has data being extracted from it. Itâs in the recycling bin
Most will be quoted to my last mail order customer.
Took 4 books about pregnancy & babies off my shelf and put them in the pile for the free library.
My job today is to clean up the kitchen. That means:
- labelling and putting away all canning, - done!
- Putting away canning supplies. - done!
- Putting away the picnic cooler & camping dishes, etc. - done!
- Clearing counters, - done!
- Wiping down all counters, - done!
- Wiping all cabinet fronts, - done!
- Cleaning sinks,- done!
- Proper clean of stovetop,- done!
- Cleaning floor. - done!
I bought last week while we had company/were travelling:
a flannel shirt at Bean (on sale of course)
a pair of linen pants which need to be hemmed, of course
2 pairs of earrings
a cross stitch of a lighthouse
a packet of 6 notecards/envelopes with seagulls on them
Of these 1 pair of earrings, 2 cards/enevelopes, and the cross stich were given away. I pulled 3 pieces of clothing out of my stuff to compensate for the shirt and pants I bought. I have eliminated a handful of papers this morning either in the shredding or dump paper bin, I kept 1 piece of paper which got put in the filing cabinet immediately.
So, I have to use/get rid of more stationery. At least one card/envelope of the set will be used very soon. And, yes, I need to find some jewelry to eliminate!
This is all based on something I faced while we were living out of a suitcase in an AirBnB⌠we have way more stuff than we need, of all types. The place we were staying was really comfortable and had cleaning supplies, a fridge, a griddle on the deck, the usual kitchen equipment etc, a dining table, etc. And still far, far less âstuffâ than we have. There were 3 of us, using 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, while the place had at least 2 other bedrooms and another 1/2 bath. Still far, far fewer things than we have â and we were incredibly comfortable.
So, I paid attention to the new âdurableâ goods I brought home: the clothes, jewelry, stationery, etc. and have made a point of eliminating MORE items of those types than I bought. Iâm being pretty ruthless!
I forgot! I eliminated 2 books while I was gone. One was a basic frugal living thing Iâd had forever. When I looked at it, there wasntâ anything that was unique enough for me to keep it: cut your own veggies, buy in bulk when it makes sense, Eliminate extra trips, etc. The other is a vegetarian BBQ book I"ve had forever for the burger mixes in it. I finished copying the info I wanted out of it this morning; itâs falling apart. Itâs in the paper bin. The basic frugality book was put in the AirBnBâs trash. The people before me who owned it had hightlighted it, dogeared the pages, written notes, etc. It was also falling apart. So, 2 books gone too!
DH pulled a piece of clothing out to be donated. I found a box grater that I can repurpose, I had been thinking Iâd need to buy one? And, I forgot. We took a wall mount for a monitor, 3 pieces of glass for tables we no longer have, some books (5 at least), a bucket of brush, and some other things to the dump yesterday, I forget what all of it was!
went through winter clothing and a couple of the bins downstairs
- 4 tshirts to be donated
- 6 commercial sweaters/cardigans to be donated (already posted)
- 1 shirt and 2 nylon tights into fabric recycling
Embroidery floss box photographed and Iâll post it once the sweaters are gone.
I have so many hand knit sweaters, donât need commercial sweaters that I bought for the office. If these donât go within a day or two Iâll steam them and take new photos
I hadnât worn most of these for over 2 years. But of course now I regret having giving them away, and that I gave them to the first person who asked vs. a couple of people who asked later who I think are less likely to be resellers. Iâm not against resellers completely, I realize Iâm not willing to put in the effort to make the money, and if they are, they should be compensated. But also, I do want to create more of a swap economy, not just money.
But it does feel good having space in the dresser again. And having clothing that matches my life better, not just repurposed from the office default.
When we get to Vancouver in November I hope I can stop off at the fancy wool jacket place and find something else to wear for our walks that feels more outdoorsy and less like Iâm going to ruin it by brushing it up against brush.tbd. The clothing budget has already been blown.
2 pairs of shoes out of the house and a few things processed by the shadowy one from a shoebox of random mementos. I suspect mostly the items have gone into the basement, but at least a container of old meds is set to be brought to the pharmacy and a few random pages are out.
a tote bag which adhered to a framed embroidery has been thrown away, and weâll deal with reframing the embroidery later. A shame, because it was a good fabric, but it is what it is.
I took 2 big boxes to the consignment store yesterday. It was a Big Pain because it involves these steps:
- First, leap out of van to alert fellow consigner that she has split her pants and her butt is hanging out (second part only implied). She apparently had extra pants, so thatâs good.
- Bring in boxes, which is tricky as one was a Chewy box that lacked structural integrity.
- Shop store.
- Go to Costco.
- Return to find they are not done yet. Wait 20 minutes.
- Take leftovers home.
At least I got $50, which covered most of the cost of the new winter things I picked up for the cuckoo. I sorted the leftovers into thrift store bag and a box for Buy Nothing.
I also this weekend was able to get rid of a shoebox of miscellaneous office supplies by decluttering both it and the other, larger, nicer bin and merging the important contents.
The tow truck arrived and took away the station wagon. Because the econobox is at the garage, there are only 2 cars in our driveway. Told DH it was weird, as we havenât been a 2 car family for a long, long time. The econobox will likely be back at the end of next week.
This will leave us with the econobox, the SUV, and the van, which is what weâve been aiming for. A cheap car to do local errands, something a bit more comfortable for longer trips (we took the SUV to Maine), and the van for hauling STUFF.
I have two pairs of fancier shoes that I should find new homes for. I feel like I shouldnât just put them up for free, but also I donât want to deal with mailing them, or taking them to the various 2nd hand shops around here to see if theyâd want them
Itâs weird what I think I should get money for and what I donât care about. Some of those lights cost as much as these shoes.
Making progress with the Buy Nothing! So far, the Chewy box of leftover 4T winter clothes (whatâs the free equivalent of a bidding war??) and the pair of boysâ dress shoes worn twice have been picked up. There was a lot of interest in the Cricut Cake but people arenât getting back to me, so that is still in my house for now. Hopefully not for long!
I want my house to be tidier and better organized. My husband is happy to work on that, but part of my role as Quartermaster is the removal of items from our home and I have a long way to go with that before we can move forward.
He said he is âruthlessâ but I do not believe him. While he personally owns few possessions, he is team âall the stuffies* can stayâ, has 3 cardboard boxes under the bed that he has never opened, and has not been observed to take an interest in decluttering the cuckooâs toys, although he is primarily a SAHP.
Well, he does own few things, so thereâs that.
*These are mostly stuffies from the boysâ rooms that they want to come live with their baby sister. I did sneak some out of the house when she wasnât looking, before she got attached.
I still need to deal with the bin of Build a Bear clothes.
oof. first boots listed. the box says they were $475 pre pandemic. I expect I bought them on sale, but still!
Perhaps I donât like to let them go for free because I never really got the wear/value out of them, while for the lights we used them basically daily for over a decadeâŚ
Itâs hard for something like that - I gave some expensive shoes and purses to Goodwill and figured someone was going to be thrilled. I was comforted by the thought that Iâd be giving someone a moment of joy.
I posted them for $50 less than the going price on the pages where they expect you to mail (with mailing being extra), so itâs still a pretty good deal.
As evidenced by someone saying that theyâll pick them up tomorrow. Fingers crossed they donât flake or run off in them when they try them on ![]()
Yes - they are still getting a screaming deal.
