Decluttering discussion thread: share your wins, ask for advice, inspire each other!

Chipping away at some bins! Went through my burning man bins from the late 2010s, and found some things that are very suited to life with a toddler. Highlights included a small quick dry towel and flip flops, which I don’t wear normally but could really use for pool trips.

Genius!

Worked in the attic today. Found a file box full of comics which will immediately go to the comic book store… and a few other surprises which will be dealt with appropriately.

Almost got to the trunk full of rotting clothes. Will take another session in there before it will have a clear path OUT.

Comics and 1 SF magazine to comic book store. Paid storage rent. Bought 1 plate at the thrift shop. Took plant trays to the farm. We sold the old sideboard at auction.

DH bought hobby stuff at the auction too. Not sure how much of it he’ll keep.

I got my whole house empty and clean to sell. It was a huge task and I’m so pleased with how it turned out.

I am so close to being done with all the decluttering/re-organizing from the basement reno + needing to move things around as a result!

I talked to wife about the camping stuff I wanted to get rid of, and she had reasons to keep it, so I haven’t had to think about it yet.

But everything we’re keeping has a home, and it’s all in places I can find it!

Edit: DONE!!

Bah. I am working hard at organizing stuff, but not culling stuff. The BIGGEST thing I need to do is keep culling – but I.AM.BURNT.OUT!!!

I bought some books about the subject, which helped, mostly it helped me see that I HAVE been working on it. I would donate the book to the dump shelf, but 2 people (or more?) donated their entire library. There’s 2 gaylords full of books at the dump, so I need to cull them, elsewhere.

We’ve agreed we’ll go to the gallery town sometime this weekend, so I’ll take at least 1 box to the bookstore or maybe the thrift shop that’s there. Big contrast. Last time we did this? I took 10 boxes of books!

Any of these books pretty? Leather bound hardcover or so on? You might find a home stager/designer who would want them for decoration. I’ve been seeing a trend of people buying old encyclopedia sets to fill up their libraries because they want to have that aesthetic, but lack the actual books.

Yeah, there’s a service decorators use where they can buy books of x color, by the foot.

1 box of books and 1 bag of clothes ready to donate. DH has some things he’ll get together for the same purpose. I have 1 small box of “flea market” items which i’ll go thru with the idea that most/all of it could be donated instead.

I’m absolutely drowning in stuff and trying to claw my way out. Clutter gets so paralyzing for me because two things about my brain always fight: 1- I have to see things to remember them. My habits are largely cued externally. I can literally walk into my bathroom at bedtime and if I’ve forgotten to unpack my toothbrush, it won’t occur to me to brush my teeth. Seriously. 2- too much stuff out and I get really overwhelmed. The only solution I’ve found is LESS STUFF. Kids make that really hard though.

I had planned on making a big attack when my oldest goes back to school/starts K in a few weeks. But why wait? The black trash bag energy struck early. My husband, sensing the building storm clouds, wisely hustled the children to the park for a few hours :joy:

1- a whole car load of stuff to goodwill
2- reclaimed the 4T clothes Latte had taken back OUT of the bin in her closet :unamused: put them back into the bin and took the bin to the garage for hand me down storage, where she can’t get to them
3- mercilessly got rid of stuffed animals that are gigantic, weird, and/or the fabric is the type that weirdly sets my dog into prey mode so they’ve been living in “witness protection” indefinitely anyway.
4- swapped out all the little one’s clothes and prepped the 18m bin to go to one of my brothers. Also took all baby type stuff from little ones dresser and closet and either trashed it (ie nipple covers, diaper cream) or put it into another NB bin for them. Also added nursing bras and PJs I don’t like as much or use anymore- I’m far enough out now that even though she’s not weaned, I’m not likely to change what I wear for nursing. On it goes.
5- I even donated BOOKS you guys. Mostly kids books no one liked all that much.
6- oh and I finally donated all the toddler size chairs and stools. She just uses them for Sheer Chaos, just like her sister did, and I’ve been hiding them in closets and stuff. Literally no point still having these. She can stand or squat for art, that’s what they do anyway :woman_shrugging: and now it’s… slightly less likely I come in to find her climbing on top of stuff.
7- oh and two bags of torn clothes I took to a friends house who has Ridwell for textile recycling.

That must feel really great!

That’s so great!

I made the mistake of asking my kid what books he wants to keep and he immediately said “all of them”. Part of me so goes  every time I walk into his room now. Maybe a month from now I can disappear some?

My strategy was to let them have as many books as fit in a certain space, or they have to pick x number to get rid of. Leaving it open ended means keeping everything because kids are hoarders.

Idk why this made me lol.

Wanting to make a big push on Mo’s stuff as well. A lot of toys are ones we’re like yeah no donate. But then stuff like duplo and blocks and magna tiles we want her to have in theory but right now they are just hundreds of pieces that she dumps on the floor and make us insane.

So satisfying!

We just moved back into our closet and I forced myself to actually discard/donate things (love my Ridwell for that!)

The kids stuff is totally overwhelming me too. I usually do a reset of her play area at her birthday but I’m not sure I can wait that long …

Yeah she’s still young enough that I just quarantined it all for a few months and now it’s leaving since none was requested by name. Eventually, we’ll have to work on doing it together, but she is just definitely not there yet.
