We held a garage sale and at the end the only item that came back into the house was Husband’s guitar amp. Everything else got sold or given away or donated.

2 bags of clothes, 2 bikes plus wall mounts and locks, 2 old blenders, an air fryer lid for the instant pot, all my knitting needles and yarn, various little decorative things, an old keyboard, a bunch of board games, stacks of books, kitchenwares.

It was a good start.

We’ve made 2 trips to the storage to move things out of the house we aren’t using now. That’s way different than previously, where it was just overflow. This was empty containers: bins, tins, baskets, and boxes of mine and misc. hobby equipment of DH’s. Some of it will be donated if not used, some of it will (eventually) be moved back home…

I put together 2 boxes of books to be researched/sold, or donated. I"m trying to clear off/around my desk. It will probably take another 3-4 1’ cube boxes to hold all the books that are still on/around/under my desk (unboxed).

Oh we kept that! Just moved it to a more usable part of the house lol

I’m glad to see you kept Finley :joy::joy:
I love his carefully neutral/very mildly concerned face

I started moving a couple things and then ended up completely redoing this shelf so there’s not quite a before picture.

Also shout out to card holders for playing card games with a kid that has attention issues and also likes to get SO MANY cards regardless of what’s reasonable to hold. And also for those Uno games that go really badly. :joy:

Someone on the local baby+kids FB group posted asking for supplies for her niece, who just got out of a shelter into an apartment and who has a 3 month old. We were able to give her our bassinet and a bunch of baby clothing that Chickadee had outgrown, plus some diapers and wipes and some toys. Got stuff out of our house AND got to help someone – perfect serendipity.

I love it when things line up like that!!!

Looking around the bedroom this morning, it occurred to me that there was a LOT of bedding that was just piled on the bedroom chair, so I did a partial inventory. Over 15 pieces: sheets, blankets, duvet covers, comforters, etc.

For 2 people and 1 bed???

Seemed excessive. Almost certainly is. Then decided this is NOT an intellectual exercise, but reality and I should compare the total with what’s currently in use:

1 flannel bottom sheet
2 flannel top sheets
1 single bed size woven blanket
1 not long enough vintage wool blanket
1 duvet cover

So, 6 pieces in use. That makes the 15+ pieces not as insane when you consider that it gets < 0 here in winter and 90+ in summer. But that also means that in order to layer on, peel off the pieces, I need a lot of them and correspondingly a lot of storage. I’m not sure how to pare this down. I could probably ditch the wool blankets that have been in the closet all winter unused, or at least put them into deep storage. I have 3 of those.

But after that? Except for the out of season stuff (which incidently, we’re still using, it’s the flannel sheets on the bed, + 1 bottom sheet) I have no ideas…

I hate camping and will never do it.* I also have a decent amount of camping stuff I’d like to declutter. It is not high end but is reasonable quality, eg second cheapest brand at REI. Is this a give on buy nothing, thrift store, or sell on marketplace situation? Gear is in good shape, clean, and has been in storage for 6-7 years.

*i have camped enough to be 100% convinced

Give it a good check, and sell what you can. Over time some materials deteriorate - hence the check it. If you bought it at REI - can you sell it back to them? If it has to be a trade-in, they might have shoes or clothes you want, or pet things.

Agree w/ Gdogg - if you’re an REI member, see if you can trade it in for store credit: Used Outdoor Clothing & Gear: Deals on Top Brands | REI Co-op

As for the other options, I’d personally either give on buy nothing or donate, but my threshold for dealing with the hassle of selling has dramatically reduced over the years :joy:

(Also I feel you on the hatred of camping - it feels like I’m the only person in the state who doesn’t like it, but oh well. I like modern plumbing and beds I can actually sleep in :woman_shrugging:)

I don’t like camping either - bugs, sleeping on the ground or it’s proxy (I often can barely sleep in a bed), inconvenient bathroom options, smoke from people’s campfires, dirt (so much dirt), schlepping SO MUCH STUFF with you (I won’t even carry a fucking purse day-to-day). Nope.

The nice parts are beautiful, but there’s a bunch of shit too.

ETA: I forgot trying to get un/dressed in a place where you can’t even stand up.

Well and then you need to clean all the stuff you schlep! Including all your stuff that smells like smoke now. I will be cleaning NOTHING else thank you.

I think all three are viable options. I don’t sell on marketplace unless it’s super high value because I hate coordinating with people. REI trade in is a great option. I think it would be super easy to get takers on BN.

I loved tent camping when I was younger but am done now. Sleep is hard enough for me in a bed. The ground is a no-go. The last time I went, it was so hot and I was on my period. No thanks.

Same. I mean I have camped for exceptions of eclipse and meteor shower. But I would have much rather seen the cool thing and then gone to a hotel.

Exactly how I feel! And then lucky enough to have local family who loves to camp, so we could borrow their stuff in case of eclipse emergency etc

I love to “day camp.” Go somewhere for the day, hike, cook outside which I do really enjoy, watch the sunset, and then drive home and sleep in my own damn bed. Haha
