Decluttering discussion thread: share your wins, ask for advice, inspire each other!

Caught up on my backlog of shredding, which means I can now process more paper clutter without worrying I’m building up an even bigger backlog.

We are halfway moved. Donate pile is growing, as is trash pile. I feel like the end is almost here.

New place is looking GOOD. Not over-cluttered or meh or anything unhappy.

Listed a heap of stuff on Buy Nothing, including books, random crap my sister brought to my house when she was decluttering, and a highchair. I really want it l gooooone.

The good news is that our study is looking better and better.

Got rid of a chair that Shit Housemate left behind by doing the good old “fling it to the curb and see who wants it” approach.

GOOD.

Also put a dress in the donate pile. It’s just too risque now that I am like… older than 25.

Trying to avoid a raw sense of minimalist panic at everything that came into my apartment after the baby shower! Deep breaths.

Sold our two rugs (finally!) $60 for those. About to head to Target and return most of the adorable but utterly impractical tiny baby outfits I got so I can use that cash for more useful items, slash clothes in bigger sizes that I don’t already have a billion of.

Rehomed a ton of mason jars after accepting (with some measure of angst) that canning just isn’t happening over the next couple years, and storing a ton of jars doesn’t make sense in an apartment.

Large things I need to declutter and I just want to toss/give away but I feel like I should try and get money for:

  • a vintage dining room chair that I hate. Just plain wood. Has a few scratches.
  • a granny cart that’s too short so I have to bend over painfully while pushing it.
  • a large printer/scanner I was given, I have no idea if it works or not and cannot tell because it needs some ink (I have the Y and K cartridges but not the C or M). I do not want to buy ink for a printer that I do not want.
  • a pet gate that ended up not working to corral our kittens. $50-something new, never used which thoroughly disgusts me. I feel compelled to try and recoup some of that.

But the thought of listing this stuff for sale, the endless questions, the endless no-shows after Boyfriend and I have both planned to be home (I’m not comfortable letting strangers in the house when alone), being lowballed with “will you take $X” when the price quoted was $X times 5… argh. Donwanna. I mean, seriously, I have not been able to sell anything online in YEARS. EVERYONE no-shows. Everyone. My time is valuable too, you know?

Argh. What do?

Then there is the tube TV. From my research it appears I’m going to have to pay a lot of money ($40-ish?) to get rid of this because in Chicago you’re not allowed to just dump it. We have no car. Honestly, I’m not certain either of us can even get it down our stairs, it is that big and heavy. I have no idea what to do about this. I can’t imagine anyone would want this.

I threw down many goals in another place, and I’m putting the relevant one here:

I commit to clearing out one bin of stuff this month. Hopefully I go through more once I get into it, but at least one bin will go.

STEPS SO I ACTUALLY DO THIS

  1. Check the size of the pile of sheets.
  2. Keep one set that fits my bed.
  3. Throw the others into a volcano onto BN.
  4. Make anyone who wants the sheets take other random stuff too.

These were middleman sheets - I helped take overflow from someone who moved, intending to do this process months ago.

Not sheets, but I posted a bag of clothing on BN. Took out one dress, as it’ll be a good interview dress if I need one next year. But included a sliiightly itchy warm wrap thing that I love but will never wear because of the itch.

This reminds me I need to get rid of that shirt that gives me an itchy spot between my boobs whenever I wear it.

Ugh and I need to do something about my one nice bra that itches me in one spot. Wrap a piece of cloth around the junction point? It’s way too expensive to get rid of.

What about posting for more than you want, and accepting a low ball offer so it’s out asap? Better than no money and lugging it out yourself when you have no car.

I always post things for $5 more than what I want since people usually offer $5 less lol.

Yeah, I usually do that, so that people fee like they’re getting a deal.

My issue lately is almost entirely no-shows. Me and Boyfriend sitting at home waiting for the person to show up at the agreed time, unable to leave and get things done, with the cats locked away and howling because they rush the door any time a stranger comes through it, person stops responding to texts/facebook messages, and I’m left wondering, OK, how long do I wait before letting the cats out and leaving to do whatever was getting neglected while I wait.

It just seems like a lot of mental energy to make maybe $5 or something. Because that’s all anyone ever seemed to want to pay, even for a piece of furniture, back in the day when people would actually show up around the general time they said they would.

I knew publicly shaming myself would work… I went through the sheets! I have fitted sheets for every size except what I need! Have posted on BN. Relocated some hand towels to the bathroom and decided YES I AM KEEPING THE HOT PINK MASSAGE GLOVE.

A heap of books, random baby things and the highchair all left my house today :raised_hands:

The new computer is here… Now I can cleanse and donate the old ones. AND last night I taught the pilot how to find a home for old not very great computers (Kijiji posts from people starting from nothing, signs in apartment buildings, the refugee families his family helps out…) less e waste, or delayed e waste!

Jumping into this thread because my closet has been making me unhappy lately. I need to accept that many of the clothes in there don’t fit me anymore, either physically or personality wise. I have 2 small drawers, 4 large drawers, probably another 15 feet of hanging clothes plus a couple of underbed plastic containers worth of clothes. While I love clothes and would never be happy in a minimalist/capsule wardrobe situation, I feel like I can’t buy the new clothes that will make me happy because I have so many clothes already.

I love the practice of deciding to “go shopping for a whole new wardrobe and chuck the entire previous wardrobe!”… By piling everything on my bed, “shopping” in it for the pieces I want to keep and then making a list of some items I feel I need to round out the wardrobe.

My dilemma is that I’m not sure it’s possible for us to have an actually tidy house where everything has a home and there aren’t boxes pulled in my bedroom. We haven’t had a clear floor since we moved in 1.5 years ago. Will it feel really uncomfortable and will I just try to cover the floor with new junk?!

I can survive with cushions and plants to make things cozy… But except the computer, this is my natural mid week state

Get rid of them you will be so much happier with only what you truly like!

I’ve gone through a major overhaul of my wardrobe. I’m still working on getting a decent amount of outfits, but it makes me happy that I really love everything I have to wear.
