I would very much like a stand mixer! I’ve used our food processor to make pastry before, but I don’t think the motor is strong enough for bread.

Try a no knead bread and cook it in a Dutch oven. I like this version:

Long rise though, put it together now and you could have it for lunch tomorrow. Maybe dinner.

I would very much like a 25 kg bag of flour right now! We seem to use a lot of flour and that would last us for a decent amount of time!

25kg flour is about 5-6 weeks for my family. I prefer to buy that amount in wheat berries though and grind my own flour.

I love no knead bread. Mine goes from start to out of the oven in about 5 hours.

Huh, I had considered that for restaurant supply chains vs. grocery stores, but I hadn’t thought about commercial toilet paper vs residential.

Yes - I used to bring breakfast and lunch to work daily but Boyfriend bought all of that out every day. That’s made a noticeable difference in how fast we are going through food. And I used to drink the office coffee, which came out of a keurig-like thingy and was decent. I am appalled at how quickly I’m going through our coffee stash even though I’m limiting myself to half a (small) pot a day. Basically one really large mug of it.

Also, we never kept much food in the house at all. We didn’t make large stockups because it was too hard to carry it home. It was easier to make small quick runs of just what we needed right then. I admit that trying to extrapolate that out to cover a couple weeks has been a challenge and has required a LOT of thought and planning that, honestly, because of {gestures madly at… everything} I lack the mental bandwidth to do.

So, a crappy disposable water bottle (the kind that’s way too easy to crush) makes a pretty decent MacGuyver’d bidet for lady bits (talking about pee here). Crushability means it will also squirt. Cloth to dry with. Just in case anyone else is pondering the issue. This has dramatically cut down household TP use rate.

I’m about to go grocery shopping for the first time in two weeks. I want to make sure I buy enough for 2-3 weeks, but I’m terrible at grocery lists. What if I’ve forgotten something crucial? (Also, what if there is a limit on milk? I’m planning on 4-5 gallons.) I really want to limit my shop to one store, but that means no TJs :frowning: :frowning: :sob:.

Well, I’m in a long line to get into the store. Lots of time to improve the grocery list. It’s been 15 minutes and I’m almost halfway through the line.

If they limit milk, get some evaporated milk in cans - you can rehydrate.

None of the stores here that I’ve seen limiting cow’s milk have been limiting any types of plant milks so that might be an option if you like any alternate milks.

Whole Foods is here - limit 2 soy or almond milk.

Success! Milk was not limited. I indulged in a lot of convenience foods, so my 2-3 week shop cost what I usually spend in a month. It’s ok.

We are now being “strongly encouraged” to wear masks at work, so I guess I’ll be making some fabric masks this weekend. I understand how to put them on and take them off, but how to actually wear all day is unclear to me. Do I have to put on a new mask after eating? What if I have to sneeze–do I sneeze into the mask, wipe my face with the mask and/or a tissue, wash my hands, and put on a new mask? What if my nose gets stuffy and I need to blow it?

Healthcare workers who are wearing masks all day and not taking any breaks so they don’t have to get new masks are suddenly seeming even more heroic.

Re: Milk. I’ve been making oak milk with dry oats + water + blender at home for my coffee and it’s easy peasy (hundreds of different quick recipes on google) and even where they limit groceries 2/item they will let you get oats and milk so then when you are out of the milk you can use the oats to make oat milk.

Yeah I need to get in habit of doing that. Oat milk is no good for baking use but I like it best of all the plant milks for cereal or smoothies.

My workplace is taking COVID-19 more seriously. This makes me happy.
Our yard operations are sourcing 5 gallon industrial buckets of hand sanitizer for job sites. :tada:

Cousin’s hospital (UK) lost 2 nurses and 2 nursing assistants. All young. And it’s just the start

Brother much worse today. Fuck, I can’t stand thinking of him unable to speak and without visitors. His mental health has never been good.

Going to try again at making a homemade mask. I have 2 but one is awful and one is OK. I had to wear the awful one to FOUR stores this morning, but was successful in getting all the hard-to-find things so we will be good for a little while. I heard ribbons might be better than elastic. I made one for the Boy, too. Not bothering with the kids because they don’t go out.

Nose fit is an issue that I am not sure how to resolve–I don’t want to put anything inside the mask that I couldn’t remove for washing.

I’ve been noodling about that for a bit. I’m thinking of putting in a small bottonhole type opening into the space where the nose metal bit would go so I can put in and take out the pipe cleaner I would be using here.
