Covid-19 discussion

We were already on a shelter in place until April 24 and are guessing that will be extended until the 30th. DH’s day job supervisor said senior officials are muttering about staying at skeleton crew until Memorial Day (May 25). Ugh! That’s 8 more weeks. I can agree that the 13th of April seemed way early but all of April and May?

My kids are trying to deal with the whole disruption of their usual activities but the 8 year old is just losing it. Stressed out, crying a lot, carrying the favorite stuffed animal all day. We’re countering with extra cuddles and one-on-one time. I hope this settles down to the “new normal” soon.

I feel bad for all the families with kiddos who don’t understand all the changes to their lives. For me personally, I’m single and my cat is enjoying more attention so it’s not an issue. I definitely don’t have enough projects to do though, so boredom is going to be a problem since I can’t wfh and we are closed. I mean… I’m absolutely crazy fortunate if boredom is my biggest problem, but it’s a thing. And I’m a big baby. Lol

Amazon.ca is the online version of completely empty grocery store shelves. Even the stuff they say will be back in stock in a week will take an estimated five weeks to get shipped out. I needed maxi pads and figured I’d try to save myself a store trip. Only the triple-pack was available. To make the $35 for free shipping I bought three boxes of granola (I like an obscure brand so it was in stock), two tubes of kids’ toothpaste, and two boxes of Triscuits. Things will apparently take 1-2 weeks to arrive but I figured I’d better order so I at least get (eventually) the brands I want.

(A small complaint but mostly a comment that it was surreal to see so much out of stock. The domestic, smaller company I wanted to order from is limiting the number of orders they take a day so I will try them again in the future.)

If you buy a tv from them it will arrive in 4 days. Can you use a tv in place of a maxi pad?

Well, I hear the new flatscreens really are quite thin… (We still have a tube TV. Just picturing walking around with that in my underwear is quite entertaining.)

You would need reinforced underwear. Maybe Amazon sells that?

For realz, I used cloth lady cloth. It was kinder to my skin and blah blah blah. And if it’s just for this once and you have an overfull rag bag I support you throwing it out after instead of washing it.

For what it’s worth, if it’s in stock it will likely not take that long - I think Amazon is being overly cautious on shipping times right now. That was certainly my experience recently, though that was two or so weeks ago…

Just wanted to flag that Instacart shoppers are on strike this week. Please try not cross the picket line if you can avoid it and check the news in your area to see if your city is on strike!

In my city, the mayor can only do the restrictions for 2 weeks at a time for legal reasons, but was pretty upfront about the fact he expected it to get extended.

I wonder how many will actually be striking. Be curious to hear updates

Well, it took this long, but I finally had a sobbing meltdown last night (I blame the final episode of Picard - no spoilers but have tissues handy) over “we’re both going to die horribly and no one will be willing to come into our infected apartment to retrieve our cats so they will die horribly too.”
Today I feel a little bit better.

A friend in Kansas City has a friend who’s been hospitalized. This friend has been self-isolating. Went to the grocery store once, that’s her only time out of the house in many weeks. That’s clearly where she caught it. That is… concerning. For some reason this really hit me hard.

I’m not sure if I can keep shopping at Aldi - they don’t open until 9 so I can only go on a weekend and it will be mobbed. Jewel opens at 6 so I guess we’re going there even though prices are 25-50% higher.

My sister lives in a county with over 1100 confirmed cases. I mentioned to her that the county just next to hers has 4, so she drove 50 minutes to shop and got enough for a few weeks. Not like you can’t get sick there too, but it just feels safer. They were of course out of tp, sanitizer, etc but groceries were fine. She did say that people were still standing way too close. Dumb.

We are now banned from using reuseable bags when shopping.
But, we still have to pay the 7 cents per plastic/paper bag.

Wtf.

We’re not allowed to use our own either, but no one’s getting charged for bags.

Oh, the 7 cent bag tax has been here for a while. Because environment. That’s nothing new. There was talk of waiving it since we no longer are allowed to bring bags, but they’re not. They’re saying the stores don’t have to remit it to the county, but customers have to pay it.

Unintended consequence of lockdown and thus shopping less: I’m running out of plastic bags to scoop the litter boxes into. :frowning:

Yours is a tax? Mine is just grocery stores being butts.

I relate to this so hard! I had to cave and buy dog poo bags (the bigger ones).

Our is a tax here, too. It’s legally required.
