Covid-19 discussion

One of my shots the nurse told me to really relax my arm, and then I didn’t feel it at all! I’ve tried doing that for all my other shots and I think it helps.

Tension and quality of the person doing the vaccine definitely impacts whether mine hurts, and even a good nurse can hit a bad spot sometimes. I’ve had a few Covid, influenza and tetanus vaccines in the last few years and some hurt and most didn’t. Tetanus shots are supposed to hurt, especially after, and my most recent one i barely noticed.

This is part of why I tell them not to count and just close my eyes. Hurts less when you don’t know it’s coming and don’t tense.

Well, it’s the day after a big family wedding and my dad woke up feeling sick. Just tested positive. I’ve tried to wear a mask indoors when possible, but there’s been a lot of eating and drinking and no other mask to be seen. And I’ve spent the most time maskless with my parents anyway, since they are more careful than others and we all tested before arriving. He even got his booster within the last 6 weeks to prep for this wedding. Shit’s contagious.

Now I have the fun wait to see if we test positive within the next few days. At least we’re already driving home due to flight shenanigans?

Sorry. Wishing a quick recovery for him and infection dodged for you.

it may have been in the shoulders/upper arms? memory is fuzzy at this point, I just know I didn’t see a thing while it was happening!

Alas, I have developed symptoms and a positive test. I feel pretty achy and have a fever + some chest congestion. Not my favorite scenario to have to drive 12 hours. But advil helps a lot, and we’re home.

My wife is still symptom free and negative. But she had the same exposure to my dad as I did, and the further exposure to me before I tested positive this morning. We’re trying to mask when not eating or sleeping, and she’s sleeping on an air mattress in the living room, but there’s only so much one can do in a one bed one bath apartment.

Lol my wife definitely tested positive the day after I made that post. It also got an uncle and cousin who we spent a lot of time with. But knock on wood it seems like it didn’t turn into a superspreader thing and take down the whole wedding. My unvaccinated sister-in-law didn’t even catch it, probably because we tried not to spend much time with her inside. The irony that I ended up getting it from someone who I thought was “safe” instead…

Very grateful that after a few days of rest, I’m feeling a lot better. I’d say I’m like 90% back to normal other than some lingering fatigue and brain fog (which honestly could just be from all the sleep, rest, and inactivity…I always feel groggy when I get too sedentary). Definitely a less intense and shorter illness than my March 2020 course. Vaccines are the best.

Now I get to play Personal Public Health Expert and decide how to handle a safe return to the world. I’m on Day 6 now, so the CDC says I can go about my business as long as I stay masked. But I’m still testing very positive on rapid antigen tests at home. So I’m probably still somewhat contagious, but am I really as contagious as I was at the beginning? Is it safe/responsible to run quick errands as long as I wear a KN95?

Perhaps there is some middle ground between full isolation and full return to life. There’s going downstairs to the laundromat for a few minutes at a time to start/switch/end the loads (no laundry in unit or in building and I’m kind of desperate after our trip+illness). There’s voting on Tuesday (it was too late to get an absentee ballot). There’s grocery shopping which takes a little longer inside. And then there’s the theater tickets I have this week, which of course require sitting inside for a few hours. I think I’m a yes on laundry and voting, maybe on groceries (can get delivery from the $$$$ store if I have to), maybe on the theater depending on when I test negative.

And I’m not allowed to go to work this week unless I test negative again. I can’t even return after 10 days without a negative test or a doctor’s note. My job can’t be done remotely, but at least I have the sick days available. I would say I appreciate them taking covid seriously, but they dropped the mask mandate in March and did not reinstate it even when cases spiked last month so it all feels a little theatrical to me.

I finally went to Ireland with a friend of mine. I have been wanting to go for years and we decided to take a tour. We left on the 17th and the morning of the 23rd I woke up feeling like I had a cold. I had some tests so took one and was positive.

The next day the tour left without me. I had a hard time getting a hold of the support department to see how it would be handled. They won’t fly me out until the first. I am in a rural area so they will send a transport to get me. Do to time involved with travel I only got 4 days on the tour and no refund. They are paying all my expenses for hotels and food.

Others on the tour don’t feel well but my friend said people don’t want to be stuck a extra 8 days so no one is saying a word. I felt it was reasonable for them to fly me out on Tuesday but they refused even though Ireland has no mandatory quarantine time. If I had booked my own airfare instead of letting them book it I could have gotten on my flight Tuesday. As they say no good deed goes unpunished. I am done traveling internationally if Covid sticks around. 8 days is a long time to be stuck in a hotel room by yourself without even a walk when I am not very sick. Ugh!!

Oh no!! That is terrible. I’m so sorry that happened.

Oh no, that’s awful! I’m so sorry you’re stuck, and I hope you’ve at least got a way to get food, supplies, etc. so you can be comfortable in your hotel room. Frustrating that doing the responsible thing to test and isolate results in a worse outcome for you vs. the other people on your trip.

Oh man, that SUPER sucks!

The travel company is paying for all my expenses but the room service menu is small because they don’t expect people to stay long in a rural area and I am a very picky eater. Let’s just say I probably won’t eat another hamburger for a long time. The hotel staff is being really nice to me.

So glad the expenses will be covered. This happened to my husband at the end of our honeymoon in Greece and it was a very expensive way to get COVID! Hope you’re feeling better and testing negative quickly.

I bet the expenses really added up for you guys. That’s awful! I don’t need to test to go home.

This happened to aaron in Austria, which was a work trip and quite strict in March, and I was so so happy that his work continued to cover the hotel. And luckily the conference covid officer helped him out with getting food delivery. The advantage was being in a massive city like Wien.

I was very grateful for the emergency fund! It could have been worse.

Not having to cover expenses is a big deal.
