Michigan has “stay home, stay safe”. Not much better.
Is virtual shiva minyan a thing? it seems like it should be. Order food to be delivered/drop food off, and then do facetime to connect with folks.
Any rabbis ruled on reciting the kaddish with 10 jews on google hangouts?
Yeah, we have a stay-at-home order, technically. Our gov isn’t calling it shelter-in-place. Though it’s the same thing.
I’ve no idea. I mean, if the Catholic archdiocese of Chicago can say no one should go to mass (which, as I understand it, missing mass = mortal sin = going to hell) to keep themselves and others safe, then I think rabbis would be OK with keeping oneself and others safe too. I would hope so anyway.
Never in my life have I wanted to impulse buy a tshirt more.
Fwiw missing Mass is not necessarily sinful at all - the church holds that if you have a good reason not to go (like a pandemic!) you’re good. Rabbitarian will have a more detailed/thoughtful expression of this, I suspect.
There’s gotta be a way to get a minyan virtually.
SAME.
If I were to write about this I would get really snarky about legalism in the church…
The World Health Organization explained the spread in these terms:
- It took 67 days from the first reported case or Covid-19 until the first 100,000 cases were confirmed
- It took 11 days for until the second 100,000 cases were confirmed
- It took just four days for until the third 100,000 cases were confirmed
That speed is fucking terrifying.
Just released for Ontario.
The list is so comprehensive I am having a hard time imagining a business not on there that you’d want to visit in a pandemic. (Provided you were taking the pandemic seriously, I guess.)
What isn’t on there? I can’t think of any place not covered by the essential workplaces list, if you stretch a few definitions here and there.
Retail clothing and home goods. which feels like a personal atr as ck
If your clothing store just started selling sinks on the side everything would be fine.
Or wrenches. Those are small. Call the head office and make a suggestion.
I would like them to reword to “stay home, or be fined $2000”.
Catching up after being off this thread for a few days. Sidenote - being off this thread/Facebook/reddit was not helpful as everyone everywhere is talking about Covid. It did help a bit in that instead of scrolling endlessly I played more Banished. Meta-social isolation!
Our state and city parks are closed. We just had a county-wide shelter in place order come down effective midnight last night, Mr. Meer got booze yesterday afternoon to tide us over for however long the order lasts. It occurred to me this morning that there’s a cemetery nearby with a large empty lot in the back and a road that loops through the empty lot, maybe I’ll take kiddo there some day this week when we get tired of walking around our neighborhood. Trying to think of where else we can possibly go that will be accessible.
On people flocking to the beaches - I wanted to believe it was all stupid spring breakers doing it until I had a work call on Friday with my team, all long time natives, with two different people talking about going to the beach. Heard back this morning that one of them greatly enjoyed her outing and was so busy making sure her kids had sunscreen that she forgot to put sunblock on herself. I wonder how that translates to general safety and germ safety. Sigh.
Reading this it doesn’t seem like either side of US politics is making a good bill. Will note that even Republicans are supporting 100% wage unemployment benefits and broadening eligibility to part time and self employed but also sending payments to EVERYONE seems like a waste of money compare to just covering wages of workers and keeping them technically employed like Britain proposed. Avoiding the layoffs and then the rehire cycle will help recovery come faster I would think.
My boss is having 4 people take shifts each day so that someone is in our business to answer the phone if clients call. We are of course closed to the public, and I doubt that anyone will call, but people tend to surprise me with how dumb they can be so you never know. We will also be receiving a few cabinet deliveries from trucks that were already on their way to us when the shut down occurred. I’m honestly not sure what to think of this, and nobody really knows if it is allowed or not. He is trying to not send trucks back to the plant and cause them more work, right or wrong. Just like all small business owners, he is very concerned and only trying to do the right thing.
Opinions? I haven’t wanted to cause him any more stress than he already has…
