Bitching about someone who is trying to be safe differently than me

Our work admin spent the entirety of the last 9 months (as long as we’ve all worked here) with her mask falling off her face, taking it off to talk close to you, leaving it off when she was away from her desk, generally having bad mask compliance in general. WELL as soon as the office mask mandate went away guess who wears her mask perfectly all the dang time.

I feel bad complaining about someone wearing a mask diligently but where was this behavior for the other 8.5 months lady!!!

So this isn’t Covid, in the sense that I swabbed negative and so did my kid. But could be Covid in that rapid tests are imperfect and a lot of news articles are going around saying that Covid is getting missed as hand foot and mouth.

My fever is gone, I tested negative. I told the OB’s office that I have a toddler with HFM. They said come in.

It’s been five hours. I have rapidly increasing blisters on my hands and mouth and bum. FFS did I just expose the whole office to HFM and or Covid?

Literally rocking up to the OB with the flu )and a mask) was a normal thing in 2019. And now every health decision is fraught with guilt and personal responsibility. From a mental health and anxiety perspective I think that the anti maskers have a point. People like me need to find a point where we choose smart things like masks and then don’t stay up late questioning all the other impacts of our little choices

I just want you and your lil one to be safe and I also completely understand the stress you mentioned here:

Dunno what to say. I hope your HFM/Covid/Mystery ailment fix themselves

Having this same discussion with spouse tonight. We have a daycare tour booked for tomorrow morning. Toddler has a low grade fever (100.4) and no other symptoms for two days. We have no symptoms. Is it irresponsible to show up in N95 masks and clean hands for 30 minutes? :woman_shrugging:t2:

IMO, yes. Because it is an area where you know a lot of people (children) are vaccinated, not due to their own choice to not get vaccinated.

Also, that fever meets the exclusion criteria for 24 hours for most daycares, regardless of covid.

OH, unless you aren’t taking the kid with you. In which case, N95s is probably not that bad to do, especially if you are just peeking in rooms, and not spending a lot of time in them.

We wouldn’t be taking the toddler, just peaking into the rooms and speaking with the director. But we did end up deciding to postpone it anyway because it didn’t feel right.

I keep hearing about people showing up for medical procedures wearing a N95 or KN95 but being made to take it off and replace with a surgical mask. Which as I understand it is less protective. What is the science behind this? It doesn’t make any sense to me; in a medical setting why is it not OK to wear the best mask you can?

I had to, but as it was for an endoscopy and they were going to need to take it off to get to my mouth while I was unconscious, it made more sense. Perhaps for any anesthesia it’s a similar concern - might need to deal with vomiting? A lot of N95s are going to be hard to remove quickly if they have head straps.

That happened to me once during a medical appointment. I think they just didn’t trust people’s masks. A lot of people came in wearing cloth masks and this was a way to standardize everyone at a basic level.

Even if someone came in wearing an N95 or KN95, they don’t know how long it’s already been worn, how good the person’s hygiene is about donning and doffing, etc. And here, people are usually coming off of public transit, so they don’t know what’s on the outside of the mask. I can see why they want to make sure everyone’s wearing something clean and fresh, and a good quality surgical mask is still quite protective. There’s a reason that doctors don’t have to wear N95s or KN95s for surgery!

I had to take my dad to the hospital and they asked us to either replace our mask or use theirs over. So if you wanted to, you can absolutely keep your n95 on.

Their masks were yellow surgical masks. So they were a known quantity I believe, and they could tell who had been issued one.

Yes, our system lets you keep your mask under theirs or replace

That does make sense - can tell at a glance that everyone’s in compliance.
If it were me I would be OK putting their mask over my N95.

This makes sense too; I wonder if bringing along a sealed in package N95 would circumvent that. Surgical masks don’t fit my face right - even if I fold the sides and tie the straps the way you are supposed to I always have huge gaps on the sides. I feel so much better wearing something molded to my face (even though yes, I know without a fit test there still could be gaps - just not ones big enough to drive a truck through!)

This was mentioned in @TrisPrior’s journal. Here’s the link to that NY Times article about judging relative risks with COVID. (not paywalled, unlocked/gifted through my subscription)

Super positive test for our 3 year old :frowning: This is the first time anyone in our household has tested positive. Everyone else is vaccinated, and the adults are boostered, but I guess we’ll see what happens.

Good thing daycare gave us extra rapid tests this week!
