Ty so much for breaking this down.

I had to ponder this one! At some point, i think it must become academic if you’re “infected,” or just, uh, lightly colonized?

Because the vaccine doesn’t give someone magic COVID-repelling body armor that keeps viral thingum from invading. The vaccine works by preemptively teaching the immune system how to make COVID-specific antibodies. And if someone breaths in COVID droplets, the immune system can eradicate them before geometric replication occurs, and before secondary immune things (mucus, fever, aches) can happen. But there’s still a viral load in the cells, it’s just not detectable.

Whereas a breakthrough infection seems to be the preemptive vaccine antibodies working slower, still preventing geometric growth, but not keeping growth below the “other symptoms” threshold.

Right? Maybe?

This seems right, yes! Like so much in biology, it’s actually quite vague. We just like to try and draw staunch lines. Then biology laughs at us and does as she pleases.

Tomorrow I’m going to begin the day by telling all my little assholes they are Lightly Colonize, and they will give me that marvelous look of thinking I’m bugfuck crazy, but too frightening to openly laugh at.

That makes a lot of sense to me!

This is also how PREP works! One of the better things I have heard💕

The USA has declared Australia unsafe because of all our COVID. We are a Code Red, and your leaders have said you’re not to come over to play.

Well, our east coast. Our west coast wouldn’t let you in to play anyway. I tried to find information but the 3 articles I found are paid entry only. Jimmy Rees is keeping me updated. (Comedian who is repackaging the news but keeping the main points in mini skits on IG)

I feel like it’s laughable we are saying anywhere is unsafe for Americans to go right now. Like wow pot here is the kettle you are calling black. Pretty sure going most anywhere besides here right now would be a good choice.

Right? I mean, I don’t think there’s anywhere in the world I could travel that would not be less Covid-y than where I am. Maybe a couple of other Southern states, where I’m allowed to travel and get no warning?

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer but per capita Australia (and at least a a few other European countries) do have higher case loads right now.

Yeah, our nurses just went on strike in one state for dangerous work conditions (Sydney/NSW) and in our other popular state (Melbourne/Victoria) they called a code brown and are pulling medical staff from everywhere to get through their COVID and emergency patients …

… And my state was supposed to drop all border restrictions on 5 Feb. Nobody is surprised they changed their minds but lots of us are upset they didn’t provide a solid alternative

Yeah my sister finally had plane tickets to Perth in March and now…

I would simply prefer to never hear the phrase “viral load” again

Anyone got a reference for whether the ability of vaccines to stop contagiousness reduces over time, and by how much/ how fast after 3rd dose of Pfizer?

Are you looking for a journal article or a lay-person summary? Here’s the latter: Where do we stand with Omicron? - by Eric Topol

Omicron cases are dropping in this area and it’s time to make a decision about February sports. B is signed up for gymnastics and I have the option to start up the kids judo program. Ry would also like to go back to practice.

B is 2 and the gymnastics class is for 18mo - 3 year olds. Only one parent is allowed to come with each child and anyone age 3 and up must wear a mask at all times. We would try to have her wear a mask but I’m not convinced that she would keep it on the whole time. She really struggles with her glasses and usually either the mask or the glasses are falling off. We would attend one day per week.

Judo would be 5-12 year olds and we would check for vaccines. Anyone not vaccinated must wear a mask at all times, but anyone who is vaccinated doesn’t have to wear one. I would wear one regardless.

Ry would also like to get back to judo practice. In his case he trains at 2 different clubs (depending on who is giving him rides to practice). One club doesn’t check vaccine records but requires everyone to wear a mask regardless. The other club (the one I would be coaching at) checks for vaccines. The adult practices everyone is vaccinated and no one wears a mask. He would be the only one wearing one.

I’m really bad at gauging the relative risk of different situations, so for the most part we have just said no to everything and not left the house for 2 years, except for a few months this summer/fall when Ry went to practice. If anything I maybe I’ll take B to gymnastics in Feb and Ry can go back to judo, and then if cases continue to fall (or we finally get a damn vaccine for under 5) I can go back to coaching. I’m just hesitant to completely base it upon our household being vaccinated because I keep seeing that the under 5 vaccine is 2-5 year olds and I can’t wait another YEAR for L to turn 2. Does this sound like a reasonable plan? Or does it sound really risky and like a bad idea?

Just here to post an interesting thread about Cholera pandemics. Apparently the 7th is happening right now, and it emerged after a volcanic eruption:

Thank you for sharing that. I read the whole thread

thankyou so much, that was a great thread to learn more about something I only had a small slice of knowledge about.
