In Australia they are reporting that Omicron has mild symptoms. I hope they are right

I hope they’re right, too, but so far I’m seeing it reported in the US only by right-wing and conspiracy sites, which makes me worry it’s just another “it’s just the flu” argument building.

True, hopefully it is less severe. Time will tell

I sure hope so. When I heard “it’s a lot more contagious than Delta” I was like isn’t Delta super contagious already? Is Omicron like someone breathes near you and you get it? That’s terrifying.

There’s a superstition that if you ear itches it means someone is thinking about you, how many variants do you think it’ll take to get to that level of contagiousness?

“Hey friend, I was thinking about you the other day!”
“Oh, so that’s how I caught this.”

Sometimes things which are more contagious are less deadly. It is maladaptive to kill your host.

That’s what I was thinking. And I think that is a possible covid goal. Like we get it down to a normal cold minor flu and just live with it. Since we’re obviously living with it either way

But too deadly for viral success is a lot different than just “more deadly than Delta.”

If it was fatal in 2% of cases instead of 1%, that’s a lot worse but probably not enough to put much selective pressure on it ;especially if it’s more contagious.)

I’m seeing it a lot more places now - hoping this means that at least she (the doc from South Africa) believes it.

We’ll know more fast. It’s just that “fast” on a scientific scale is a different order of magnitude than “fast” on a news cycle scale. I’m going to try to just not dwell on it for a few days or a week and then we’ll have much better info.

I was very happy that Denver and most of the surrounding counties put in place a mask mandate last week. It says that all businesses must enforce masks unless they are a “vaccinated facility” which they define as requiring proof of vaccination and having above a certain threshold of people vaccinated. I can’t remember the % but it was in the 90s. Theoretically, this means a private business could go mask free but a store can’t because you would have to have someone at the door checking vaccine cards and constantly updating the % of vaccinated people in the store.

I was very disappointed this weekend when I went to Ace and Target and neither store was enforcing masks. Ace didn’t even have any signage up anywhere mentioning masks, and Target just had the old signs that said if you aren’t vaccinated they request you wear a mask. At Ace the employees didn’t even have on masks and most of them did at Target, but lots of people in the store didn’t. It’s like nothing changed and no mask mandate was put into effect.

Yeah, I keep seeing articles in the newspaper about how Denver is a warning sign for us here in California and we should be worried because we have the same vax rate but cases are surging there. What they fail to mention is that all of the highest population counties (LA and Bay Area) have had stark mask mandates for months. It doesn’t matter if you’re vaccinated or not, if you’re indoors then masks are required. I suppose the exception is eating in restaurants but many people are still dining outdoors which is possible thanks to the extra warm November (85 here today, ugh). At least in my part of LA county, I’m surprised when I see at nose indoors, and many are still wearing masks outdoors at places like parks. I really think that’s contributing to the different trajectory vs Denver.

Wow. Living in oregon, I keep forgetting that other places don’t have a mask mandate. We’ve had required masks inside and outside when social distancing not possible regardless of vaccine status, with no exceptions, since?? July or August? Anyway, mask compliance is decent but I do see a lot of noses peaking out if mostly accidental.

Had a guy tell me the pandemic was over when I went into Target yesterday with a mask on. Maybe 20% of folks inside were masked.

Very interested to see how this differs in Finland.

Guess who lost her vax card (I’ve had the digital one, okay!) and now need to bike 24 miles round trip to pick up a replacement before she leaves on an international trip in 4 days?

I keep mine with my passport. Maybe that’s where yours is?

Oh trust me I looked. All the places have been looked in. I also appear to have lost my OTHER vaccine card that contains my yellow fever vax…which I need before Feb. (remember when vax cards weren’t just for covid?)

Pandemic is absolutely over here. We were the only people in masks when we went to Walmart this weekend. Not even the staff wears them anymore.
