I’ve been rowing (machine) in my cloth masks if there are more than 4 of us in the boat bay, since it is enclosed now (I didn’t row on the water in the masks). I haven’t noticed it any harder to breathe in them than without them; at the end of the endurance test I was really sucking air, completely panting when I was done, and that was less comfortable with the mask on, but I don’t think the actual breathing was any harder.
My issue with working out in a mask isn’t about the breathing, it’s about sensory issues. My skin becomes hyper sensitive when I’m working out. Even a bra strap fitting poorly drives me up a wall.
I have pretty much given up cloth masks in favor of KN95, and N95 if I am doing something super risky. Those, I find hard to work out in, they seem to really trap moisture from my breath so my face feels wet and gross.
Yeah, I think the ones that trap all air would be harder.
This group is all vaccinated, and I’m vaccinated, so it’s not hugely risky. I just think any large group deserves some caution since I have unvaccinated kids.
Super disappointed the OSHA ruling has a stay on it. About 15% of the company won’t get vaccinated. I was happy the mask mandate + testing was going to be enforced.
yea I cannot work out in KN95s. For me, I’ve weighed the mental health benefits of working out vs the risk of covid as a vaccinated person wearing a regular mask in large space.
The analysis comes out firmly on the side of working out for me, but it might not for you.
I am not going to the gym - it’s like the one thing I’m really still not doing. I don’t like to work out in a mask and I was just lifting weights by myself anyway, so I can get enough of the same effect at home.
But when I did try it, I agree that the disposable “surgical” masks are the way to go. They feel much lighter. @TrisPrior, what’s the reasoning for using KN95s? I haven’t worn one in a long time… I might if I was going to be in an unmasked, not-socially-distanced crowd or if I was going to the doctor with symptoms (meaning you have to sit in the gross area of the waiting room).
Yea, if I could install an ice rink in my house, I likely wouldn’t be going in somewhere to work out, lol. Alas. But I miss big weights that I can’t fit in my apartment (no olympic barbells on a 3rd floor apartment lol) My workplace building free gym is still closed, unfortunately.
Everyone’s balance is going to be different. I have to work in person 5 days a week and my fertility treatments involve a lot of doctor’s appointments… and sometimes we eat in a restaurant… The gym just seemed like an easy thing to shave. If this round is another no-go and I decide to discontinue treatment, I will probably rejoin in the New Year with the January People.
I got one of those cheap plastic Chinese-made barbell/dumbbell thingies and I keep it in my basement spare room. Since I don’t have a squat rack or bench or anything fancy, I can’t do a ton, but it’s enough to scratch the itch a little bit. I can boost about 60 pounds over my head, which isn’t great but is enough to feel like a squat, if you know what I mean, and I can also do Romanian deadlifts and whatnot.
Yea! I got a 30kg kettlebell last year (after waiting nearly 5 months due to covid making it impossible to find weights) and a few sets of hand weights. It’s not great but it kept things decent when I stopped having access to a squat rack to offset the cardio of running outside. In the before times I squatted 165lb (140% of bodyweight) and deadlifted 115lbs (bodyweight) RIP those stats lol.
I’ve been doing hand therapy every week and I’m like…can you just let me go play on the squat racks over there… after I do a bunch of finger lifts.
Whelp, 2 additional New England states over the past 2 days have decided to give the finger to the federal guidelines and recommend that all residents get their booster if it’s been more than 6 months since their last dose (or 2 months if J&J). So after all my whining I am signed up for an appointment tomorrow (there were 3 available and like a dozen available at the next closest place). It has been 7 months.
I get mine at Walgreens since it is only 2 miles from my house, and apparently their system requires that you get the same manufacturer as the initial series (it might be that my local one only has 1 type) even though the federal guidelines say you can mix and match, so I am signed up for Moderna again. That’s fine, I guess. I mean, it has to be, unless I make the extra effort to try to find a clinic, but that would be a lot more effort.
Can i go ahead and get a pfizer booster if I had moderna?
CDC says you can mix and match.
My limitation is a Walgreens limitation.
After Delta took hold I read a lot of stuff about how we all needed to be wearing masks with upgraded filtration. So I switched then, at least for indoors. Also KN95s fit me more snugly, even with those little ear strap thingies to pull the straps tight I have problems not getting gaps with cloth masks. And because KN95s are more pointy in the front are less likely to end up in my mouth.
I’m using the cloth masks I made - they have 3 layers which includes a non woven layer in the center, and a more moldable nosewire than come in disposable masks, and they fit very tightly (better than disposable surgical masks.)
If I were more nervous (ie, caseloads were really high) I’d wear a disposable surgical mask under the cloth mask.
I’ve been surprised at how much I’ve gotten used to breathing through a mask.
That’s what I signed up for.
Eta at this rate it’ll be recommended for everyone by the time of my appointment at the end of the month.
I tried various masks and didn’t find an N95 that fit snug on my face. Otherwise I would probably use that or KN95 for more crowded situations and a lesser mask for daily stuff. I have been using the disposable surgical style masks because they have seem to fit me better than the cloth masks I have tried.
I have accepted that this is wasteful and imperfect.
I’m officially boostered. Got the Pfizer one since I had J&J first and that’s what my Doctor is recommending.
That’s what I did, and my side effects were off-the-charts bad. IDK if they would have been better if I stuck with Moderna, but they were bad enough that I won’t mix and match again if I have the option to see if that helps.
I got Moderna for all of my shots (including booster), and the booster side effects were off-the-charts bad for me anyways
So I would say don’t feel like you necessarily made a worse choice by mixing and matching, ha.
I wear KN95 all the time because no one here is vaccinated, will wear a mask, or will keep a distance. Also my glasses don’t fog (as much) with the KN95.
