Great. I wonder if breakthrough cases are rising because of efficacy going down as people are vaxxed for 6+ months? Maybe boosters will help that?
I just had a sore arm for like 12 hours. Hopefully yours is just as easy.
In the latest edition of āFlorida really is a dumpster fireā: The local school board voted in their regular meeting on 11/2 to continue the current masking policy through December 6th, after which thereās an opt out option. Yesterday they had a special meeting and voted to start the opt out option Friday. Like this week. Then after new years all mask wearing is optional for all ages, no opt out form required.
I mean, you canāt really use percentages for that comparison. Because fundamentally, as the more of your population is vaccinated, the more people being seen will be vaccinated. Itās a math problem to a degree. You need total number of cases for it to really mean anything.
Letās say you have 100 patients and 2 are vaccinated. Thatās a 2% rate. But then everyone gets vaccinated and you have one patient, and they were vaccinated. Thatās a 100% rate. But you actually have half the number of vaccinated patients.
Soā¦ is it a scare tactic by the media? Just another story they can post? Does nobody actually care about posting correct and understandable information? Bah.
Thatās whatās happening with Isrealās data - Israel has the highest percentage of their population vaccinated, and they were the earliest to get widespread vaccination (so itās wearing off earlier for them), so lots of people are using the data of hospitalized covid patients to say that the vaccine doesnāt work.
Oh, that makes TOTAL sense, letās make masks optional right after the holidays when people were traveling and seeing others!
Also not being reliably enforced ā we went out for dinner a couple of weeks ago after the mandate was in effect and were not asked to show proof of vaccination.
I would say itās half incompetence (there are a couple excellent science reporters who have a great understanding of statistics but most of the people writing about this are not them) and half that panic sells. The headline that gets more clicks is always going to be āVaccine efficacy waning!?!?!ā rather than āpreliminary data shows that efficacy against hospitalization is super good even though the stats are confusing.ā
Perfectly said! And agree. I think a lot of times the media is no better with stats than the average reader is.
Soā¦ donāt pay attention to percentages, only to case numbers? My local hospital is at capacity and so are the next towns over. Most of my immediate family is boostered now, so Iām not really very worried for us.
I meanā¦ to what ends? What info you watch depends on why you want the info
Ha. Good point. No real reason at all, other than I see headlines. Time to stop looking at headlines.
I had a brain MRI last fall (also for migraine) and I was able to keep my mask on because I was wearing a fabric mask without a nose piece.
Sorry you had to have one, too - hope yours was as anticlimactic as mine. Wish Iād thought of the cloth mask, but I had on an N95 as usual.
Thanks. It was, which is good but didnāt help with treating the migraine.
It was pre-vaccine so I was nervous about having to go to the hospital. But they run the MRI at all hours. Mine was at 10pm when everything else was shut down so little interaction with other people.
Same.
The LA county public health director is saying that basically everyone in LA should consider themselves eligible for a booster shot soā¦I signed up to get one! Iām also starting a new job in an education setting tomorrow which I think makes me extra eligible?
Iām planning to get Pfizer this time (vs Moderna last time) but would love to hear thoughts or evidence on whether to stick with Moderna.
ETA link to article if anyone is interested. I know there are real ethical debates to be had on boosters vs rest of world shots. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-11-12/l-a-county-encourages-all-adults-to-get-booster-shots
We signed up tonight after seeing the same notice. I hadnāt thought of myself as qualifying prior to this (work in an office, but masks + vaccines required, not public facing).
Iām not entirely sure which one Iāll end up getting. I made an appt through Kaiser so I guess itās whatever they have available? Or willing to give?
I heard from a doctor friend that thereās a preprint out showing some benefit to mixing mRNA vaccines, but itās not peer reviewed yet.
