My unvaccinated sister in law finally caught covid. She sounds pretty sick, but I’m hearing all this info third hand so who knows.
My brother had covid last fall (they weren’t living together yet so she avoided it), and he later got vaccinated. Guess we’ll see how good his immunity is!!!
Plus side is that we can have Thanksgiving together now because she’ll be within her 90 days of post-covid immunity. (Presuming my brother either avoids reinfection, or catches it quickly enough that his 10 day isolation will be over by then.)
Booster shot on Friday.
Apparently “overweight” qualifies as high risk. So basically the whole state is eligible for boosters, but it kind of sounds like they’ve given up trying to get the other half of the state vaccinated, anti-vax sentiment is just way too great.
(Our entire schoolboard is now antivax. I’m nervous they are going to do away with the regular requirements the “parental liberty” sentiment is so high.)
Yesterday’s booster gave me a sore arm overnight but now I’m fine. I assume I had an easier time because it’s a half dose. Got my flu shot while I was there too!
I am fully vaccinated and boosted but I keep hearing from people first hand who are fully vaccinated and have gotten covid recently. One of the people had covid, then was fully vaccinated, and just got over covid again. Thankfully the illness was minor, but WTF. I was led to believe that infection plus full vaccination was supposed to be awesome immunity. I’m also disturbed that people I know are taking tests at home so then their positive results aren’t being counted. I know the ship on actual contact tracing has sailed, but still. I don’t want my company sending us back to work when the cases are underreported.
Well, it did. Until it didn’t. That’s the tangle with mutations and tracking vaccines as time passes. We can only know what we know then. And we update as we go. That’s science, alas. Absolute truths are the realm of religion, philosophers, and politicians.
I am confused because my kids’ school is NOT listed as a school with active cases on the public school system dashboard, but BOTH my kids brought home letters saying that someone in their class had covid. WTF?
Parents in my area have also complained that what they know first hand doesn’t line up with the local schools dashboard.
When you say a letter, does that mean your kids need to quarantine? For me, I just get an email from the principal that there was someone on campus, usually late in the day, that there was someone one campus who tested positive for Covid on X day (usually the day prior to the email) and everyone who was deemed to be a close contact has already been notified. The time Kiddo was exposed, Mr. Meer was informed verbally at pick up and we got an email later from the school nurse which included what our next steps were.
What I haven’t seen yet is a way to send the nurse something saying Kiddo has already gotten his first vaccine dose, I think him being vaccinated means he won’t need to quarantine any more even if he is exposed again (presuming he’s not symptomatic). I also haven’t heard anything about any school-based vaccine clinics yet but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re waiting a couple weeks for the initial rush to pass and supplies to even out.
No, they only ask you to quarantine your kid if they were exposed, meaning maskless contact in less than 6 feet… which in theory should rarely or never happen at school. (Maybe at lunch?) Anyway, my kids do not seem to have been exposed.
Went up to the imaging place for my MRI, and there was a sign on the door saying that masks are required. That’s pretty shocking for this area, even for a medical facility, so I was pretty darn happy. But then soon as I got called back, all the techs were running around with no masks in sight.
Didn’t occur to me, but if you’re going to have a brain scan, guess what – you have to take your mask off.
no i hate it so much, I’m not gonna go read that for my own sanity
I do know a lot of vaccinated people who have gotten it. I have a friend in the UK who has now gotten covid three times despite being one of the earliest to get a vaccine (health care worker but not in covid-settings) - pretty much every variant that’s popped up.
that being said, with a few rare exceptions, my anecdata is that most of the vaccinated folks that have gotten it have far fewer symptoms, and only one had a very serious outcome (died).
I’m just continually reminding myself of the year I got a flu shot and Mr. Meer didn’t, he had the flu for a week and was recovering for a while after that, I had it for about 48 hours and was fine a week later. And the flu vaccine’s effectiveness is a lot lower than the covid vaccine. That’s my anecdata (anecdatum?) comfort for myself.
Actually, does data exist yet for the vaccines’ effectiveness compared to the various strains or do we only have the original effectiveness numbers?
We went to New Orleans this past weekend. They are supposed to require proof of vaxx to get into bars and restaurants - but I was only asked for my card twice.
To be fair, we only ate and drank outdoors and i’m unclear on whether it’s only a requirement for indoors? Still, that was a little disappointing. Though I was glad they checked at the 1 bar where I had to wait a really long time to get served my to-go cocktail.
It was also really mixed whether hosts and waitstaff masked or not. It was required on transit, and was enforced, Boyfriend got scolded for not having his all the way on immediately upon boarding (we were running for the streetcar and fumbling with the payment app on our phones and he just plain forgot)
Does anyone have data or the brain space to make me a search term for covid outcome in vaccinated individuals 60+ with immunosuppssants (organ recipient)
And 90 or 85+ with COPD (also vaccinated)
Fuck fucking Boris. First two people in the family to test positive are the most vulnerable and taking few risks
Our daycare is having an outbreak. 6 staff, 4 infants.
Apparently after the first staff tested positive, she contacted the state for guidance, they told her no quarantine was necessary and no one else needed to be tested. WTF kind of guidance is that?
The staff “wear masks” but they are always down, because they always seem to have a bottle of water, or eating something. When they are in the office, they are just off.
I feel HORRIBLE for the infant families. My 2-year old is also in an unmasked room. Apparently if any of those rooms has a positive case, they are shutting the rooms for 2-weeks.
So the work and provide childcare nightmare is going to start again, without a doubt. We pretend covid is gone here, but it is not.
/Booster tomorrow. I’ve heard it’s a doozy. I’m planning to get Moderna since my previous two were Pfizer, and mix and match sounds like a winner.
