YAY, a teacher friend in the burbs got her vaccine!
I am so so happy that my friend with Type I Diabetes got her first shot today! She works for a big hospital system, but is not patient facing so was last on the list there.
As for me, I still feel like trash lol. Fever came back and went up to 100.5 (I never even saw > 100 when I had covidā¦), and I gave in and took some advil for the aches. Hoping to be functional enough to do some minimal cleaning and meal prep before I become one with the couch again.
At least I was able to move my second dose to a Saturday. Glad Iāll have a recovery day again.
Oof. Thanks for sharing your experience; I also had it previously and planning to get vaccinated when my turn comes around. Hope you feel better soon.
In Florida, Manatee county (south of Tampa) basically has vaccines on a lottery system instead of first-come-first-serve.

Iām giving serious side-eye to this comment:
Just, seriously dude? Youāre shaming people for wanting to get vaccinated as soon as possible? What rock have you been living under for the past year? They didnāt crash the website for funzies.
Itās a little hard to tell tone from the short quote, but I think heās actually saying that the lottery system removed the technical & rush barriers so that no one had to feel like they were racing or hitting a crashed website. I looked him up and he seems to have a history of modernizing public health software.
I have a hard time believing that no one could come up with a better system than weāve got, which is pretty much No System At All. Frankly, issuing everyone a random number and saying āThatās your place in lineā would be less frustrating.
I spent 45 minutes in the online waiting room to discover, again, that there are no appointments at the grocery store. Or Walgreens (different line). Or CVS (another different line.)
You have vaccines at drugstores and groceries
Thankfully, Iām back to normal this morning, other than my arm still being a little sore. It was a more intense 24-36 hours than expected, but at least it was short-lived. I hope you donāt have the same side effects, and if you do, that they pass quickly.
Iāll report back when I get the second shot to compare the response.
I agree.
Chicago is sort of doing that - except they are sign-up numbers, not an actual place in line to get the vaccine. When my number comes up THEN I can TRY to get an appointment, i.e., enter the Hunger Games arena.
Good point. Iām sure he was frustrated that they tried to do something they thought would be more equitable (e.g. not penalizing people who are less tech-savvy with later time slots) and it still ended up crashing with everyone rushing frantically.
Theoretically. Thatās usually where people get flu shots these days. I donāt think that my PCPās office even does vaccinations for adults anymore - when I got my shingles shot they sent me off to the drugstore.
They are at the pharmacy of these stores though. They give all kinds of vaccines at those places.
Many of them also have quick-care style clinics where you can see a nurse practitioner too. Like for a sports physical, or a basic cold.
My Dad got his first Pfizer shot yesterday. Even though he was batched into a later group than my Mom (based on vaccine availability, not based on eligibility), he will be done ahead of my Mom because the recommended lag for shot #2 is shorter for Pfizer vs. Moderna.
I will say the process they are experiencing is nothing short of terrible. Their healthcare systemās website is yelling ādonāt contact us, we will contact you. Donāt call your doctor.ā You have to dig beyond that main page to find out you need to be sure you have an account in their specific tools. I imagine not everyone is going to dig that far since the main message is ādonāt contact us, we will contact youā. The worst part was not knowing the method that they would be contacted so jumping every time the phone rang (and answering all of the spam calls) and obsessively checking email and messages. Iām pretty sure my parents got into several arguments around answering the phone, because my Mom finally ātaughtā my dad not to answer spam calls, so that lesson needed to be undone temporarily. I can only imagine the amount of fraud going on as people fall victim to scammers!!!
The scheduling tool was also terrible. It requires selecting facilities and searching one date at a time, instead of showing what dates have appointments available. There was also a lot of reselecting and reentering information when available appointments disappeared.
Does anyone have good resources for workplace guidelines on COVID protection? Unfortunately it seems like CDC and OSHA were written with Trump influence since they say things like āask employees to consider covering their mouth when coughing and sneezingā š¤¦
Iām looking for something fairly official or academic to use in negotiations with family who want us to be part of their pod, but arenāt making their employees keep masks on if they are at their own (open office) workstations.
OSHA regs and recommendations are in flux right now.
That said, remember you donāt have to negotiate. You can set boundaries and stick to them.
How about some state regulations? I forget which state youāre in, but this one seems reasonable (link to the actual order is within): https://www.governor.pa.gov/newsroom/mask-wearing-is-required-and-critical-to-prevent-the-spread-of-covid-19/
I am so happy that I get the vaccine Wednesday.
Thatās wonderful!!
Thanks @rural and @ferngully!
Iām very good at boundaries but am trying to walk that fine line of getting what we need without ruining family relationships ya know? So Iām hoping that pointing to something specific and official looking will allow me to say āThis is what experts say you should be doing, itās not just my arbitrary rules that Iām forcing you to follow if you want to see your grandaughterā.
My friend with RA just got diagnosed with Covid.
