This article is reporting that opening schools with precautions is generally pretty safe and in-school transmission is rare. That’s reassuring. It does, however, point out that you probably shouldn’t have WRESTLING MATCHES. Oh, really, you don’t say?
Vaccine tourism has started…
Interesting. I’d be curious to see it broken out by older kids vs. younger kids. I also wonder how disruptive quarantines have been on families if their goal was to have kids at school so parents could work.
Looking at my county’s dashboard, at the beginning of the school year only 48% of K-12 students were attending in person. Now it’s up to 61% which is interesting because I thought it would have been more but I suppose seeing Facebook posts asking how to go back to brick and mortar would get more attention than all of us continuing to stay home like we’ve been doing from day one.
Elementary aged kids are more likely to be in person, high school less likely. Doing my own calculations off their numbers, 3% of the students currently attending in person have had confirmed cases of covid at some point this school year. I have my doubts about reporting though, if the test is done at CVS or whatever the schools might not hear about it officially.
Thanks for the reply everyone, at the moment the only time I wear a mask is at the airport and on the plane so about 3hours, so I have been washing it after two plane journeys on the way to work and then on the way home, but I might start taking one mask to wear to fly up and one to wear to fly home and wash them both when I get back
my state in Australia hasnt had community transmission for over 9 months - so we dont have to wear masks normally.
I am incredibly mad that I actually know someone who did this.
At the same time I know people in florida who are legitimate 6 months of the year snowbirds who won’t get it because they aren’t eligible here yet.
I feel like this was a good recap of which masks you should be wearing now and why (TLDR; N95s are best, but it has realistic options if you can’t get those): https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/01/26/n95-masks-safest-next-best-options/
It also includes links on how to check the fit of the mask, e.g. the “rainbow passage” for testing if the mask will move when you talk.
And it linked to research showing that surgical mask + cloth mask efficacy rate was about 90%, whereas a surgical mask alone might be 70-80%.
Apparently this is becoming a Thing in Maryland too.
some people who I have very strong words about, went to a vulnerable Northern community to do this.
Although I do appreciate the “now former president” part.
The fine is awful. They shouldn’t have printed it. I’d pay that for a vaccine (but I wouldn’t steal a vaccine or risk the health of this population). That fine is nothing to these a holes
I don’t understand why the judge isn’t taking their wealth into account and sending them for the 30 days in jail.
I don’t understand how they didn’t think to use their wealth to find a legal (if unethical) way to jump the line. Seriously. This pandemic has proven that while “we’re all in this together” the poor are further in it than the rich. The rich can pay their way into loopholes.
You know, this has reminded me I have a pearl (“pearl”) sweater guard from the '50s that belonged to my father’s youngest sister. I wonder if it’s too long to work as an ear saver?
That is very pretty.
That’s just an example from Google to show that I’m talking about but imagine pearl clips and pearls in the chain (for a value of pearl where p=plastic). I may play with it today to see if it would work on a mask, but it has occurred to me that it might get tangled in the hair on the back of my head, too.
Wow. That’s horrible. Not only due to the population they took it from, but because they lied about their eligibility. The article I posted it seemed like the people were all eligible, since the states didn’t limit it to residents.
As a global community though, we need to figure out how to get vaccines to poor countries as well. All these stories about rich people getting access, only rich countries have it.
I think that so far, access to the vaccine in countries that are relatively safe has been really well controlled. Which is good. But this is tragic and disgusting. Maybe we should all be pushing for jail time
They lied and said they were living and working there. They were in the right remote community on the right day, with a motel they could plausibility lie about working in
completely agree. they probably spent more getting there and for the hotel.
Hopefully the social ostracism is worse.
Doubt it though. Humans.
