Canadian Specific Thread

In case you are eligible, we’ve had one for several years as we fly from one end of the country to the other at least once most years. It’s been hassle-free and meant that we fly easily on points or use the companion voucher (less often, mostly points) so have saved thousands over the years. The interest rate is high and we haven’t always been diligent about not carrying a balance, so tbd on whether Royal Bank/MC or we have come out ahead, but it’s worked well for us as far as I can tell. There isn’t the same flexibility with collecting and spending points the way there is with Airmiles (from what I understand from my mom who collects those), but that’s been fine as we don’t travel much outside of this one major trip most years.

I like the free suitcase which pays for itself.

Oh yes! That has definitely been a useful perk, too.

There is a TD investing class action suit out there.

Happy Canada Day!

What’s everyone up to? I enjoyed a leisurely lay in and am still in my pajamas at noon. Plan to do a bit of yard work and take it easy, maybe go see the local fireworks this evening.

Deciding if a very minor thumb injury needs an x ray…we’d be halfway through the ER waiting period if we had just gone

The healthcare system should let everyone have one xray a year without a referral. Let us skip the line, ease ER wait times.

I made a not sweet enough banana cake, and then made a lemon drizzle that I applied before it had cooled down enough, so i poked some holes in the top and took all the icing that had pooled down the side and drizzled it over the holes. (Not sure if it was supposed to have that low sugar, or I didn’t convert properly from weights sibce we don’t have a scale here)

Now I am working on the tv static cardigan while the shadowy one works on their gig (a few hours the first 3 days of each month)

And I took more photos of the rose

We have chosen the exciting route of delaying it and playing chicken with our vacation. It’s the left thumb so only the second most expensive digit. Anyway he has OT Thursday so I emailed her to please change the treatment plan

We spent the day cleaning and doing laundry company coming tomorrow.

I also did some nature journaling.

Chinese food (from the freezer) for supper.

we finished off by going to the Italian film festival that seems less strictly Italian these days and is probably showing Canadian Bacon and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World tonight. We didn’t have festival wristbands, so we didn’t get any samples from the various sponsors, but we did get 4 $1 lottery coupons, and a small bag of ground coffee that someone had dropped.

I am still in my pajamas and did none of the things I thought I would do. I watched Dexter season 1 with my mom, not all of it! And read a book. Since I took vacation for the rest of the week my brain feels like it is Saturday. I’m very excited not to be doing work work tomorrow but puttering with stuff.

We did Canada day things! And I didn’t even grumble or get overly political.

We went to Port Credit instead of the hospital and had a lot of fun along the river. Then we slightly entered the festival area and it was way too much for B1. We’d gone in a store to get drinks and he almost couldn’t leave. Luckily he managed to listen and collaborate on a plan and we got out of there safely. If I hadn’t realized the problem when I did, things would have gotten much worse. So then we relaxed and recovered and walked a bit more and got overheated and went back to the car. On the way back we realized the MP and MPP had been competing to hand out flag signs. My kids were very happy with their mini flags and pins and new shirts.

We recovered at home and tried to make it to one of the firework shows but ended up choosing a familiar park by the lake and seeing some of various displays. I also think that was a better intro to firework displays for the kids. B2 seemed neutral on fireworks and anti mosquitos. B1 really liked the fireworks and fell and scraped his knee. B1 will definitely need noise protection if we see one. Until this year he could handle more stimulation via coregulation because I could carry him. Same with if he froze. I’m glad we’ve been working on all those skills because he loves festivals and events.

My favourite Canada day thing was that Saugeen beach got a new sign! Apparently the claim was successful a while ago but they’d left the Sauble beach sign. My least favourite is how such a small change brings out all the racists.

We had no plans going in, but had a great Canada day accidentally! First priority was to see if our dog would get in and out of our new dinghy so that we can go sailing without being attached to a dock this month. We have 2 new-to-us dinghies that are more-or-less identical; 1 was $200 from an estate sale, the other was free. We took the one DH thought would work best out, doggo was in and out in a flash! Phew! But turns out there is a plug in that one that didn’t hold water, so…good thing we now know to take the other one out instead!

Then we decided to have a salmon burger picnic and invite close friends at the last minute. We had the salmon in the freezer, and managed to snag the last buns, potato salad and coleslaw at the grocery store–win! I also won by declaring that I was not doing any cooking at all, and even bought a tray of cut-up veggies. I am historically a homestead gardener who makes everything from scratch, which I am moving away from with glee as menopause makes me care very little about continuing what used to be a major passion. All in all it was a too-hot but successful holiday-day.

Sadly, I woke up this morning and suddenly realized that I had forgotten to do one quite important work task last week before going on vacation, so… :frowning:

Tangerine has changed how they’re doing their rate promos - now instead of sending you an email letting you know to trigger the promo, you only see the option in your ‘insights’ section of the app or the website after you’ve logged in.

My promo offer was benchmarked against my balance July 2 and goes to the end of Sept (3.5%)

When do you pull money out to trigger a new promo? Immediately after the old one ends? And where do you move the money, a different institutIon?

we moved the money from the Shadowy One’s promo about 10 days before expiry, but they didn’t get a promo offer this quarter. We just moved it to our primary FI with the plan to either put it back into Tangerine, or to move it to the EQ 10 day notice account which is 2.85%

If you have a regular payroll deposit (which we no longer do), then the EQ account or Wealth Simple’s accounts offer relatively strong rates, and I’d put cash there.
