Canadian Specific Thread

The nun who taught me in second grade showed the class that a missile sent between Russia and America would have to pass over Canada and if it falls short we die. She had us do bomb drills, getting under our desks.
My neighbour had a WWII bomb shelter that she kept stocked.
This was in the mid-late 80’s, the cold war was mostly over. Not in the hearts and minds of some old ladies in rural BC, I guess.

Canada’s northern sovereignty and the North’s military importance was a thing in the cold war. The government forcibly moved Inuit communities further north to strengthen our claim on the far north. That was when the US and USSR were enemies. If they are now friends it makes sense that they have a renewed interest in the north and Greenland. Plus the shipping route thing.

I don’t think trump wants the south. Too many people who would resist and vote against him and make problems. I would bet that he will make us as miserable as he can then offer to back off if we just give him the north.

I’m hoping I’m wrong.

we’re used to people going across borders to pick up the things that are cheaper on the other side, something that fluctuates greatly along with currency exchange rates.

should tariffs dig in, I expect we’ll see more personal travel arbitrage on things like electronics, normalizing people who are working on the edges (and not so edges, shadowy one is still sad about the corner stores who no longer get their bootleg US limited edition Coke Zeros since borders were closed in 2020). Just like how people used to go across and get a whole bunch of clothing and snip off the tags to get around the personal limits for purchasing for the various time periods.

And when everyone is doing it, then it’s so much easier for LEOs to be capricious about enforcement.

Hi, am wondering how you all approach home internet. We have Bell, which I switched to about 4 years ago in a literal rage from my experience with Rogers. However, we are now paying $125 for internet with Bell, for the same package that is currently listed at $65 on the Bell website for new customers.

Switching is a real hassle, but I will do so for $800 a year. How do you all manage this? Do you cancel and then wait for a retention call? Threatening to cancel did nothing, the Bell guy basically told me to go for it. If I call and tell them to cancel at some future date do you know if they will try and offer me a better deal PRIOR to the cancellation being in force?

I switched from Telus to Shaw last time. Telus had a similar new customer offer listed that Shaw had but “couldn’t” offer it to me as an old customer when I called to cancel. I think they offered me a one time rebate instead of the lower rate? Usually I don’t switch because of the hassle, but I was annoyed by their “offer” and it wasn’t too bad. The most annoying part was having to mail the equipment back.

I used to use teksavvy and start (looks like it was bought by koodo). Less nonsense. I think gamers are fussier.

We did the bell/rogers switch and will probably do it again

I have worked for Videotron in the past (Bell biggest competitor in Quebec) and they always do that. Plan with a competitive price for a limited time to lure new clients, then after some time the price skyrockets. There’s a « retention » department you can be transfer to if you threaten them that you’ll quit; they will give you a discount again for a limited time.

I decided I did not want to play these games so I am with EBOX.

:open_mouth:
What!!!
They are unhinged now!!!
Normally that’s the only way to get a good deal (for a limited time again, then you’d have to threaten them again).
You better find another company then

Wanted to add that I was able to get a Rogers Preferred Program code and applied it to my husband’s cell phone bill, and it is saving us $45 a month, so that’s great! Have to tackle the home internet now…

In case anyone is interested in my Bell internet saga lol, I went into a Bell store today to complain/discuss my bill. The salesperson suggested that I cancel my account and switch it to my husband’s name, which is ridiculous, but I did it, because it lowered my bill to $85 from $125. I also lowered my Roger’s mobile bill by $45 and cottage internet bill by $30 so that is $110 total in month in total savings and only 19 hours of my life to get that done, ha.

Hmm, like, just open a new account in your husband’s name, move the cell phone numbers onto that account? Maybe I should do that whenever my current commitment runs out. We pay $268/month (internet, tv, two phones) and x12 it’s a sickening annual number.

Yes! I “closed” my account and opened a new one under my spouse’s name, still staying with Bell, but getting the new customer discount. It still required changing the modem, which was a hassle, but not that big of a deal. I got everything done within 30 mins today. So my internet + tv app bill went from $125 to $85
