Have you ever heard an owl honk?!

It’s like a goose kinda.

We heard that noise super loud and close. Then hooting. Confused!!

But got some light on it and got to see a gorgeous owl!! Sadly it was so exciting and unexpected and of course night time so no photos, but some audio recordings!

It was high on a tree on a dead branch, the tree just off our deck!

EDIT: Here’s 14 seconds with the hooting and a glimpse, albeit not the best!
EDIT: Based on iNaturalist and some youtube videos I suspect this might have been a Great Horned Owl!
EDIT: Trying to share the honk sound

you go for a 4 hour walk along icy trails, and the best photo op is in the car park as you’re walking out

Thanks!! Here’s a few more I liked. Stationary, and maybe invading a squirrel nest?!

That looks like an invasion indeed.

I have no images but I was pleased to note the return of the redwing blackbirds to campus this week. I’ve missed their little mechanical calls.

so they don’t dive bomb your head? v lucky. The shadowy one is mentally scarred, luckily not physically, from their attacks.

gorgeous, esp the pintail

oh no, they stay fairly unreachable in the riparian areas and people are generally smart enough to not want to get out there

Went back to where we saw the swans and pintails… with my big camera.

But they weren’t close enough for better photos. Did see some American Black Ducks though.
