21 in 2021 Challenge: Save $21,000

YTD: $14,900
This month I spent on a sort of planned, sort of spontaneous holiday and also bought accommodation for another holiday in December.
3 months to go, $6k to go. Can I manage to save $2k/ month? Er, maybe. Probably not. This has been a lot of fun. I have a wishlist that is about $11k so if I get those things and fail the challenge, I’ll still be pleased with myself!

46.6% of income saved, I am very excited. I never know what I will make with working on commission, so if I can get near 50K I am thrilled.

Moving over here from the 21% challenge, because I’ve safely surpassed that and am probably going to make 21k.

Year to date pretax income
Old job $35,247.88
Tiny side job $1,505.68
New job $16,334.60
Cares act tuition refund $750
Stimulus payment $1400
Total $55,238.16 + negligible savings account interest that I’m still too lazy to look up right now

Year to date savings
Credit card debt payments $2,053.05
Easily accessible emergency fund $3,000
Less accessible emergency fund $8,722.28
Roth IRA $2,150
Old Job Simple IRA contributions $804.32
Old Job Simple IRA match $804.32
New Job 401k contributions $1,116.02
New Job 401k match $1,022.97
Total $19,672.96 with employer contributions, $17,845.67 without
35.6% or 32.3% savings rate at 83% of the year.

I feel like I must have done my math wrong, that’s so much money saved. Like a shocking amount of money saved. 5 years ago I earned a little over $25,000 a year, saved nothing, and felt like I was drowning in credit card debt, and now I’m nearly saving that much, it’s wild. It’s really nice to do this check-in, because I definitely feel more secure in my finances and see a nice number looking back at me when I open YNAB, but to actually calculate it all out makes it feel real.

We are either way behind and won’t make it, or I relax any 1 of my various no bonus/ no mortgage/ etc rules and we’ve easily got $21k saved. I guess I would like to do a little calculation at the end of December to see where we actually ended up for savings if I include everything, and compared that to actual income.

+2850 for 18850/21k. 250 is incoming as soon as I transfer vacation monies from SIL out of Venmo. So I’ll say 1900 left.

November is always a bit expensive with holiday gifts and flights, but I think I/we can hit the goal by end of year!
