Does anyone else repeatedly think that the letters you see can’t possibly be a word? And then they are always a word.
Actually… #3 I don’t consider to be a word and feel vindicated. But the other times it was definitely a word!

I had it down to four patterns earlier, like AB_C_ or AC_B_ or two other patterns, and none of them looked right. But indeed, one of them was The One.

This one felt like a challenge.
Summary
I had the same question. Then I read an article about an interview with the author. Evidently there are 13,000 words in the English language with five letters. The creator made the game for his partner, and she was going through some hard stuff and wanted something mindless to do. He set her up with a game where it would show her a five-letter word, and she could choose, “I know this word,” or “I maybe know this word,” or “I don’t know this word.” Only words that she knew are included. In part because he made the game for her, and in part to avoid words being selected that no one knew and upsetting a bunch of people. The words are chosen randomly; he plays each day to so he doesn’t know what the word is before the puzzle publishes.
So when I thought, Hmm, could it be this and repeat a letter? I decided Yes, this is totally a word she would know.
