I haven’t been playing long enough to run into this but I think your archives example is a particularly challenging (aka common) letter grouping!

Strategy discussion including opening guesses

One reason I start with a consonant heavy first word (sport/ports) is that it eliminates many common letters quickly.

Then I move onto a vowel heavy word (adieu if nothing pops in sport, or another word if playing in hard mode and I have to use letters from ‘sport’

Next depending on my mood and what I know at that point I use remaining tries to tackle “ck” or “ch” along with one from the list of f/n/m/b/y depending on what I already have deduced.

By the third guess I had eliminated some common consonants and wanted to find a word with ck, I knew it had an A and decided to also test Y with “wacky” which got me very close.

I think this is what makes it hard mode. You don’t have the opportunity to get new letters onto the board if they aren’t in words. Or in my case, that you can’t think of a damn word with a letter in that position.

So I think it’s a feature, not a bug, but it does kind of suck, because you can’t really control that.

Yup… I’ve switched to hard mode, but not in the archives… there my first three guesses are often

just to get 15 letters covered, all vowels (not including ‘Y’). It’s often easy to get it on guess 4 that way.

Yeah, I realized that later. On my screen I can’t see the first guess when I’m looking at the letters. I wouldn’t have gotten it anyway.

Your guess, which was a more logical choice than mine, was also not correct.

I tried a totally new starting word, and then on a whim changed one letter in my standard second. CLEARLY I WAS PSYCHIC AND AM A GOOD GUESSER
