Today I Learned

So why is Russia invading Ukraine? It’s … complicated. But a friend linked this video which gives a 1/2 hour fact-based, geopolitical analysis of the reasons behind the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. I certainly learned a lot. (The last 3-4 minutes are an ad for some subscription streaming service. Feel free to skip that.)

Interesting history about the “chop suey font” aka Chinese restaurant font.

It was a shockingly long time before I realized the ‘font’ was peeling stickers

WOW. This was in OREGON no less, and I did not know about this! The Japan earthquake resulted in a mass species rafting event. :exploding_head:

I knew about the dock, but I didn’t know about the highly invasive specimens who rafted over. Glad so far it seems like none got a foothold. Soooo lucky it washed up right by Hatfield Marine Center, they do amazing work.

Also super cool to learn Japan sent money and people to assist with cleanup efforts.

Not sure where to share this. But my friend in Moscow just sent me this. Will also share on my journal.

Please donate at support.meduza.io if you’d like to support the only media outlet that is still publishing real news in Russia.

Anderson’s piano. This whole set up is so cool and weird and old. And I never thought about modern wire being TOO strong/good for old applications.

Apparently I had no idea how a bike works! Super interesting video and also funny as they lock the steering and see what happens!

I’m not really into celebrity stuff but a deaf man (Troy Kotsur) won an Academy Award this year! The first deaf person to ever win an Oscar was Marlee Matlin but he’s the first man. Some info about the movie, I didn’t bother to see it due to the general plot (able daughter helps disabled parents) but it’s still progress, especially that they used some actual deaf actors:

Oooh, that’s too bad. I read a kids’ book called Song for a Whale that I thought worked better (in theory, haven’t seen CODA) because it is about Deaf child with a Deaf grandmother but hearing parents, and her father’s lack of fluency in ASL seemed like something hearing children can relate to just as much- YOUR PARENTS DON’T UNDERSTAND YOU! IT’S LIKE THEY’RE SPEAKING A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE!

I like to think we have come a long way from people arguing that Marlee Matlin didn’t deserve an Academy Award because it’s not hard to act deaf if you are in fact deaf (ewww).

Wow, I didn’t even know about that reaction! It says a lot about how people view disabled people as only their disability. She is deaf and her role was to act deaf. Whereas no one would say Philip Seymor Hoffman was a bad actor because he’s a white guy IRL and only played white guys (I hope, plz, lord…). People are…inconsistent, lol. And I think something about disabled people achieving outside of disability-specific spaces really pisses some insecure able people off? Like if someone disabled out-achieves someone abled then…what does that imply about the able person? They either can’t even beat a disabled person OR that person can’t really be disabled. Must be one of the two.

I remember when there was a para runner (double amputee) who was getting really fucking fast and he wanted to compete in standard non-para competitions and like, all the sudden allllll these orgs and able runners were claiming he had an unfair advantage…like, they literally were trying to argue that being a double amputee made him faster and that it was unfair and too easy for him. It was wild! Then he murdered his girlfriend and went to prison so the whole story is kind of bananas, but before that point I was on his side, lol.

I remember this story! I had no idea about the ending though, WOW. I was definitely on his side um before I heard that part, haha.
