Today I learned I have not, in fact, been watching Amy Adams in Sweet Magnolias.

I’ve been watching that show! And also :exploding_head: talk about a look alike.

That intro song by nickel creek is from one of my all time favorite bands, and the tour for that album is the first concert I ever went to.

Right? Major look alike! I like the intro song a lot, that’s cool that you saw them IRL!

I LOVE Nickel Creek!

THEYRE SO GOOD. And I swear so few people have heard of them, it baffles me.

Yeah, even though Chris Thile won a dang genius grant! I’ve tried to follow them thru various collaborations and solo projects as well. They’re all so talented.

Yeah I also got to see Thile perform solo when I was in college. He’s incredibly good. He freestyled with the guitarist who was headlining and it was honestly mind blowing. One of the most technically proficient and creative musicians I’ve ever seen.

OMG so jealous. I keep meaning to see him when he passes through Chicago but it hasn’t happened yet.

These days he does tours with The Punch Brothers if you catch them!

I saw Nickel Creek on maybe their last tour together, and The Punch Brothers a couple of times. Chris Thile is coming back with the symphony but I think I’m gonna skip that one…

Do you like the new season so far? I wasn’t sure after the last episode of S1 if I wanted to keep watching.

Basically I may need spoilers because mental unsteady means shows gotta be nice to me. Maybe a PM.

Timely

Just watched last episode of season 1 and first of season 2. It’s immediately resolved, not very drawn out. Scene moves to in the hospital, but nothing is lethal or even particularly permanent. Just short term implications. I can give you the specific run downs so you can decide if it’s triggering if you’d like. No more images of the car or police though. And no medical drama “save the life” style scenes.

I was nice for me to read this bc I’m the same way. <3 Sometimes it feels like there’s nothing I can watch because everything is trying so hard to be edgy. I love that SM is so wholesome. Hope you’re having a good day!

I’m very much the same way. And it can be a nasty cycle- I subconsciously am more drawn to darker contents when I’m already anxious or depressed and it makes it worse. I have to be so mindful I’m not feeding that loop. Because otherwise that stuff holds no appeal for me. I’m fine now being uncool lol. But it used to bother me I couldn’t consume any of the shows etc that everyone was talking about at the time.

Ooof, yeah that too. It’s a brutal loop.

Summary

Like the dark stuff I gravitate to isn’t triggering to me personally and I think it’s like, at least I know it will be upsetting in a specific way that I can deal with? Like it’s worse when my guard is down and then BAM! there’s some trigger that is personal to me. I didn’t realize it was a common thing but it makes sense that it is. Like you, I’ve been trying to cut that out of my life though. It’s really not healthy for me.

Sometimes it’s not even graphic ptsd specific triggers that get me it’s just like heavy plot lines…like what happened to escapism?! I cancelled my magazine subscriptions two years ago because even makeup magazines started feeling the need to cover heavy stuff. It’s like…really? We can’t even read about eye shadow without being reminded of constant suffering? Come. On. Oh and stand up comics! Like, wtf is with half the stand-ups now needing to drop heavy truths and teach lessons and shit? It’s like JFC I understand the unfairness of the world, I live in the world every single day. I JUST WANT TO WATCH A NICE SHOW AND LAUGH A BIT, IS THAT OK?

I like K-dramas so much in part because they are generally more positive and wholesome than American media. It’s such a nice change! Also it’s so  in a way because, yes life is hard and has all this awful shit, but that’s not 100% life either. There is also so much beauty and goodness and acting like there isn’t is kind of an insult to the good in humanity. And I think sharing beauty and goodness is a much more effective way to replicate it in the world than only spreading harshness.

SM is so, so lovely. I used to read heaps of fantasy and such and have barely read any in the past decade because I just don’t have the mental space for it. Books about personal finance and housekeeping and well written romance? Yessss it’s like happy warm bath for my brain. THAT is the escapism I want. Clearly it sounds like I gotta get on the Korean drama stuff as well.

Summary

I was so upset when S1 ended how it did because it was horribly shocking and I just wanted light, fluffy, nice. It has some minor problems but I can overlook them because so much else, as you noted, is so damn dark/ edgy/ gritty/ WTF people I just want to feel good because I am dealing with shit elsewhere, mmk?

Yes! The first episode of the first season (with the dude chef) almost turned me off the entire series! Also if you do start watching K Drama let me knowwwww!

TIL I’ve been choosing my tea wrong. These are all Twinings brand - we have, among others, Lady Grey, Irish Breakfast, and English Breakfast. I like Lady Grey’s flavor best but if I was super tired I’d drink Irish because I thought it had more caffeine. No. It has a stronger flavor, that’s what the strength thing on the box means, but it only has 24mg of caffeine compared to Lady Grey’s 29. English Breakfast has 22mg.

Whoa! Lady Grey is my favorite tea and I too assumed that caffeine content would go Irish Breakfast > English Breakfast > Lady Grey. :exploding_head:

From an interview with author Lisa Yee: " I also learned that McDonald’s wanted to do General Tso’s chicken (again, not really Chinese food), but the person who created it wouldn’t sell them the recipe. So, McDonald’s created their own with their own dipping sauces and called it Chicken McNuggets."

When I told my kids that sweet and sour chicken was “Chinese chicken nuggets” I didn’t realize that it may have been the other way around…
