Tiny Complaints

it’s so dark at 4:43pm. and the cat won’t stop begging for her dinner, which is not for another 45 minutes.

Social media was fun again for like 5 days following the election but it’s already making me doom scroll again

I’m getting very close to the idea of leaving Instagram and Facebook for 2026. I don’t know what to do about buy nothing, a couple special topic groups I use for info gathering, and a few relationships I primarily tend via reel sharing. :sob: but I’m just so sick of the reaction intensity Algorithms mining every bad anxiety/thought/bit of news I’ve ever had or seen, and amplifying it.

Also my meme librarian status would have to be revoked.

And this is why I’m still on FB in particular.

I know if I stay on FB though, I’ll just start using their… shorts reels whatever they call them, the same way as IG. So keeping one is like keeping both for me. Alas.

I generally got off social media in 2021 and it’s incredible

I am back on a little bit. Enough people are gone from Facebook and the algorithm is so transparently desperate that I can have it on my phone for Buy Nothing. I made a finsta account just to follow one workout plan so it doesn’t show me anything from people I know. I do still get sucked into the short videos though. But it brought me Zohran videos and also Curtis Sliwa (this interview he did with a documentary about de-clawing cats had me crying laughing last weekend) so it’s not all bad.

and this is 90% of my problem summarized succinctly haha.

Facebook short vids are worse than insta, so it’s easier for me to get off quicker

Ah, see, they bring me the same creators videos. And I have very poor self control once I get sucked in.

Which is obviously by design. But like, my husband can pop open IG, check the 3 videos friends have sent him, then close it and forget it for 6 days. I am not wired like that.

You know about the “feeds” in Facebook, right? In feeds there are a few ads, but otherwise it’s only posts from people and groups you choose to follow. No “you might like” posts or videos.

This has also been my experience. I just mute all the reels lol

I quit FB a year ago and I’m thinking of opening a new account so I can use marketplace and some groups that I can’t find equivalents of elsewhere. I really don’t want to, that place is awful.

This assumes a measure of self control, alas :upside_down_face:

Do you have a PC in your house or just phones? I limited myself to only doing Facebook on PC forever ago so it makes the threshold of “just looking for a minute” much higher, especially with little people around who want to be all up in your business at all times they are awake.

I do, but it’s a 10? Year old hand me down former work computer. I use it once a month to do spreadsheets lol. I’m worried if I use them on the computer, I’ll just be sneaking up to the office constantly and not supervising them enough/getting mad when they come in and mess with the computer.

I did talk to husband- if I go ahead with this, I’m thinking I’ll use him as a bottle neck on some things. Either have him post items on BN, or have him log me in on his phone when I want to post something, to make it very one step removed. I won’t delete my accounts, but I have a tendency to… creatively bypass some of the limits I set for myself. :grimacing: I have a bit of a self-rebellion streak I have to be mindful not to trigger. “Fuck you mom!” Except I am both the teen, and the mom, and no one wins.

FWIW the buy nothing app has been less glitchy lately. At least in my area it’s fairly active and you can filter to different radius to suit your needs. It’s pretty easy to post stuff for sure.

I got off Facebook many years ago but I still succumb to Instagram off and on. I had it completed uninstalled but then it was Instagram or twitter for updates during and after the fires in January which sucked me back in.

I had a price match on frozen vegetables, and they gave it to me for 3 of the 5 bags I bought, and I didn’t notice that they hadn’t done the others until I got home because I didn’t have my credit card with me (coming directly from the gym), and I was talking to the shadowy one about getting their card out.

we did save on the rice cakes though, so trying not to beat myself up too much on that stupid tax.

and then the pharmacy that does drop in jabs didn’t have any covid shots left, just flu, so now we need to schedule with big chain.

Spent 20 minutes (!!) confirming that the IRS hasn’t announced its 401(k) limits for 2026 yet. Ended up having to call Fidelity because no other methods were fruitful.

I only have alcohol that I don’t like in the house and it’s cold out so I don’t feel like walking to the neighborhood bar.
