The Unf*ck It Thread

Oooh I get you. Yeah if you don’t have spaces for stuff to go, it gets overwhelming soooo quickly. But yeah, you don’t want to organize anything you don’t really need/want if you can avoid it.

The solution is never to buy more storage. At least not the first solution. Get rid of stuff and see if you can fit what you need comfortably into what you already have.

ETA: Example from my kitchen - I’ve been trying to make it more functional for about two years. We did add a hanging pot rack and a free-standing shelving unit, which really helped. But the room would still feel very cluttered if we hadn’t also done multiple rounds of purging, consolidating duplicate foods, etc.

And you are not a slob. I have lived in your home, so I have authority here. :stuck_out_tongue:

OK I wanted to listen to today’s before I recommended it, but I do think today’s episode is a nice intro, and you can see if you like her general deal: 320: Dealing with the House When Everything Is Changing - A Slob Comes Clean

Obviously available on iTunes, Spotify, etc. too.

She does some interviews and some stand-alone talk talks (technical term).

I’m a Dana K. White fan, too. Her way of thinking about stuff is very helpful.

I wouldn’t even self identify as a “slob” by any stretch, and she’s helped me a ton. Also as an added bonus with understanding some conflicts with my ex lol.

I self identify slob. Definitely the “too much stuff” category. I love reading her books, very soothing, I’ll have to listen to the podcast.

While I throw out crap.

I’ve been clearing out some small, garbage-like objects. Aka garbage. That was sitting around in my drawers because I didn’t know if it would go in the garbage or the recycling.

No access to buy nothing for a few days while my group splits in half, so I’m creating a mental list of stuff I can give away on there.

This made me lol

I need someone to follow me around the house reminding me of this whenever I’m clearing out clutter.

Just throw it out. You won’t regret it or miss it or even remember it.

I’m saying this to you because I’m not allowed to say it to my husband, who is the one who really needs to hear it. I mean, I can say it, but only if I want to cause head-spinning exorcist type of scene in my house.

But it might still be useful! I/someone else could use X thing in Y way so I shouldn’t throw it out, it would be better to give it a second life instead of making it trash - says the other part of my brain. Then I just go in circles and can’t decide and do nothing.

Do you have buy nothing or next door? You could post the questionable items on there, and if no one wants them within a week, throw them out.

My Buy Nothing is kind of a pain in the ass because they want to make an effort to build community so they discourage porch pick ups, whereas I just want shit gone to someone who can use it. I don’t want to have to talk to them. Next Door might be an option, or Craigslist curb notice maybe if the weather is decently not rainy. Really I want the neighbor at the end of the street to do another yard sale and take advantage of the traffic to stick stuff out there with a “free” sign on it.

Oh nooooo this is dreadful. Especially in a pandemic! I don’t want to talk to you about this banged-up cube organizer, I just want you to remove it from my porch. We can exchange a few nice FB messages about, for instance, your plans to paint for ceiling with the ceiling-painter I am unloading, but meeting in person… shudders

That’s how my groups used to be. Before the pandemic. I guess Florida’s still pretending covid doesn’t exist?

Oh sometimes when nobody wants my stuff on buy nothing I list it for free on Facebook marketplace.

This room had random stuff piling up on the rug and desk, and the shelves were starting to feel cluttered and top-heavy. Cleared things out and it feels so much better.

This is so lovely! What did you use for the white bins?

Thank you! They are Ikea Tjena boxes. That wall is my closet, and the shelves are too shallow for any kind of fabric bin meant for clothes.

It’s so dang relaxing.
