Snackuary 2026: Food Budget Challenge šŸ„™

My mom came to my apartment with food :joy: But I still managed to finish a block of tofu and a mango that started to have wrinkles (but was still good). January is weird this year, I have a friend who comes at my apartment 2-3 days in a row most weeks so I need to adjust my groceries accordingly.

I’m a little late on my check-in  So far we have spent $375.61 on groceries, which seems really low for it already being the 20th of the month and we’ve already done our Costco trip this month, and we haven’t eaten out as a family. DH took the girls to Chipotle for lunch one day but that’s it! I’m guessing it’s partly low because there have not been any stock-up deals on groceries this month. We’ve been using what we already have on hand and only buying exactly what we need for the planned meals. The freezer and pantry are getting bare though!

Category SUM of Cost

2nd check-in (I think? Did I forget last weekend? Apparently)

Spending is up to $257, not including whatever my husband has been spending. This is pretty good at it includes a Costco trip. I also did a different grocery store run and got a random Boba, a coffee, and a $13 trip to the salvage grocery store. I didn’t find much that was useful but it’s good to know it’s there. Cheap avocados!

We are on track to make our goal. For the next week we’ll be out of town on a family trip, so likely will be bankrolled by others… not gonna complain.

Had friend over for dinner last night, but it was basically free because we used MIL’s gift card (plus it was a sale), a few components from a flash food produce box, and a cheese sampler pack also from flashfood. People were very happy with the roast eggplant with miso recipe.

meal planning continues to be a challenge, but so far food waste has been very low (eg soft bit cut out of the eggplant). I still desire restaurant food, but I’m reminding myself we have several planned for Feb.

Previous spending on groceries:
$124.07
$110.76

He stopped for salad for both of us, bananas for me, and a frozen pizza for him yesterday, $16.78

Total groceries so far: $251.61

Think I’m going to have to declare I don’t have a clue on the eating out, though. We all went to eat after my surgery on Tuesday, and husband paid for everyone - that’s me, him, both my parents, and his mother who showed up unexpectedly. No clue what it cost. There may be other times he’s gotten lunch I don’t know about, too. I’ll track the groceries.

Instead of eating out again today, we’re to make Hamburger Goulash for supper. We’re busy deep cleaning. I’m exhausted!

We had lunch out today because we had a 1:00 appointment with the property assessor’s office and he had to go to the library to do volunteer paperwork first. $21 for lunch, but we will save over $1k in taxes as a result of the trip. Plus I have leftovers for supper.

Then a stop at the grocery for important storm supplies like wine and frozen pizza. $ 24.87

Grocery so far this month: $276.48

I emptied the freezer of the meals that I was tired of eating, so progress! The fruits and vegetables in the fridge are getting eaten too! I was a bit pissed that when I did my online grocery, it arrived later than expected and they gave me green grapes and strawberries. Yes it’s nice to have free stuff but I struggle to eat lots of fruits and vegetables without some going bad, so I didn’t need extra fruits :joy: I froze the strawberries and I’m going to make an effort to eat the grapes during the week.

Came home from a themed dinner with friends…with a bunch of marinating uncooked chicken. That will be supper tonight.

Well we didn’t have supper last night, so the chicken is cooking now…for tonight.

Last week of the month and I’ve settled into a gentle routine in the morning of tidying the kitchen, reviewing the fridge and planning the meals for the day. This doesn’t make meal planning an less tedious but at least it’s out of the way early. Hopefully I can cement the habit enough for it to survive a busy B&B season.

No food waste at all this week :grinning:

Quick update since I actually need to work, but I forgot to update yesterday–$24.36 for groceries this week (fresh stuff, eggs, cream, tortillas).

Food for this week will be onion tart courtesy of another frozen pie crust, half the gruyere left in the freezer, all the onions in the fridge that desperately needed to be eaten, and most of the old cream as well. And I’ve brought out some cubes of zucchini soup to thaw as well because I can already see the tart won’t be enough for lunches/dinners all week, so that’s a dent in the freezer

We are trying a new trivia place tonight, though, so a question mark on how much that will cost.

3rd update - total grocery spend so far is $524.98. We’ve also spent $92.26 in eating out (3 lunches at Chipotle, but never the whole family at once :joy:) and $82.98 for DH and I to have dinner at a celiac safe bar for date night!

The freezer is really bare, but we will get our Costco CC refund in the next few weeks, which is almost $300 this year. So that will help us refill the freezer. I did a pretty big stock up on Friday at King Soopers on pantry items that were on sale plus had an additional $1 off per item if you bought 5 or more (mix and match). So I got $200 of pantry stuff for $100.

Forgot to update over the weekend. Got another CSA box on Friday and have been eating through that produce for the last few days. (Of course, I also went to the grocery store to get a protein and some breakfast stuff.) The pantry remains semi-chaotic. I guess I have five days left to figure that out!

Finishing off more stuff! Finished the chocolate collagen powder, have the last tikka sauce on the meal plan for the week, used the frozen black beans to make a big batch of soup, used up some weird ā€œtreatā€ snacks for school lunches that were dying in a weird bin in the cupboard, so on.

Definitely hasn’t been 100% wins this month- there’s been a few times after buying something I was like ā€œdammit I should have used X insteadā€, but mostly I’ve done a good job on the pantry and an adequate job in the freezer. I plan to keep this mostly going through Feb, certainly the eating down the random pantry things, and I’m going to try really hard on the freezer too :crossed_fingers:

We made dinner from all pantry items yesterday! I think today I’m finally going to take an inventory

Been carrying a receipt around for days now, but last weekend we spent $58.96 on groceries, bringing the monthly total to $335.44

I’m pretty sure I missed an update or two, but here are more things I used up from the pantry:

  • kidney beans
  • one last bag of chocolate chips (more like chocolate wafers, so they didn’t make the best cookies, but I’ll live)
  • Flatbreads
  • Miche sourdough bread
  • Crackers

And I didn’t eat the last of the pistachios, but the bag is in my cabinet at work now, so it’s not taking up space.

It’s definitely much easier now to see what we actually have. I’m pleased.
